Yabetz chuckled affectionately deep in his throat, and returned the nuzzle with one of his own. If anything he was the one lucky to have found Yavie. Most foxes found him a little too odd for their tastes, even as a friend. He’d tried dating once or twice before, back in his homeland before he’d traveled here, but both times the vixens had gotten annoyed with his “childish attitude” and hadn’t been able to understand why he was always wearing his mask. Yes, Yabetz thought that he’d used up a lifetime of luck in meeting someone like Yavie.
“Ah don’ think they’d mind sae much wit’ us bein’ foxes an’ all. ‘Tis humans they don’t trust, which Ah can ken. But Ah doon’t think they’d mind if we took just these two little rocks f’r ourselves, and tis easy enough tae appease them if they get unhappy. A gift of milk or plantin’ of some flowers would cheer ‘em right up again.”
Yabetz didn’t need much time to consider Yavie’s question. He shook his head, smiling. “If Ah knoo that yin he’s aboot on business of his own. We have have tae hunt him doon, he’s that good at goin’ aboot unseen. Ah think we can snatch some moments for ourselves, he won’t hold it against us.”

Yabetz felt a stab of surprise punctuated with a feeling like some had turned him inside out and left him in the sun to warm up, then turned him back again. A light blush colored his cheeks and he leaned into Yavie, carefully holding back so he didn’t tumble her over with his greater size and weight.
“Ah love ye too, mah wee Bumblebee.” He made a rumbling sound deep in his chest, not quite a growl but not quite a purr either. “Ah dunnae knoo whit Ah did tae deserve ye, but Ah thank whitever creature or deity whit decided that Ah deserved tae meet ye and have ye in mah life.”
In the back of his mind there had been the of wondering what kind of flowers they should get to plant, where they could find them, how they would plant them. Where could they find something to make their little rocks into charms for necklaces or jewelry of some kind. As soon as he started cuddling with his mate all those thoughts were firmly sat on and shoved away. It was funny, since they traveled together alone most of the time others would assume they had plenty of time to, well, be alone.
The pair simply treasured every moment they had together. Best friends, companions, lovers. Sometimes in still moments like these, the impact of what they truly were to each other just came over them and all they could do was sit and bask in the other’s presence.

Yabetz’s expression behind his mask was a thoughtful one was the couple started the walk back down the route they’d arrived on, towards the stream. “Ah dinae that they’re faeries as ye be thinking off, Bumblebee, but there be several types o’ water fae. I dinae that any live aboot this place, since they prefer lush forests and easier than that whit we’ve been walkin’ through.”
He ran through the mental list of water creatures he knew and started relating them to his mates.
“Nymphs, which look much like human lasses, live in water. Th’ ones in fresh water are known as Naiads, and th’ one whit swim in the oceans are Nereids. Nereids have creatures they ride called Hippocamps, which have the front half of a horse and the back half of a dolphin. Mermaids, o’ course, which also have the back half like a dolphin but the front half of a human. Selkies ye dinae see oot of the oceans either, and they look like seals at first but can take off their skin like it’s clothes and become bonny humans. They just put the seal skins back on, and they’re back tae seals. Humans often fall in love with them, for they’re rare among fae in that they have souls, but sich unions often end in tragedy for no Selkie could love a human more than she loves th’ sea.”
A frown crossed his face, hidden by his mask but clear in his voice.
“They’re not sich bad creatures should ye see ‘em, though water beasties are quite shy. There’s bad beasties too which ye should look out for. In mah homeland there’s one called the Kelpie. They look like plain horses and try tae charm human ontae their backs, then they take them under the water and drown them.” He fixed Yavie with a serious look from behind his mask.
“Ye always have tae remember, even in the land o’ magic there’s horrible things ye’d never want tae come across.”

Yabetz’s figure instantly relaxed by a few degrees and behind his mask his expression softened as he leaned over to press protectively against his mate. “Dinnae worry lass, Ah will always protect ye. ‘Tis nae so hard tae stay safe around the fair folk. All ye need is knowledge.” He tapped his skull with a tilt of his head, smiling. “Ah have plenty o’ that in mah heid, never ye worry!”
He tried to think of some knowledge he could impart that might help reassure Yavie while also teaching her that protecting one’s self wasn’t so hard. “Ye see, humans dinnae believe in the fair folk, not all of them. Pure goons, they be, cause believin’ is a big part o’ stayin’ safe. Ye know these things are real then ye know tae look out f’r ‘em, ye ken?
Now there’s some exceptions, but iron and salt tend tae repel faeries. There’s also th’ sayin’ that they cannae cross running water. ‘Tis cause fae are creatures of magic, and those thing purify and dispel magic.”
