Just then an order came through. Firestone run, Faloth advised W'ill. It was probably just as well, they were both getting cross. Swooping down again and again, grabbing bags of firestone then blinking up to whomever needed them and tossing them for the dragon's rider to catch. Despite his grumpiness, W'ill managed to focus enough to accurately toss the firestone to its intended recipient more times than he missed. Tossing heavy objects like firestone bags was something the young former brewer was good at -- how often had he tossed bags of hops or barley to his brewer parents back home in Ruatha?

No sooner had Faloth and W'ill returned to their position in the wing than another clump of Thread got through! Veering frantically to avoid a direct hit, Faloth nevertheless got scored again as he charred the Thread into crackdust. So did W'ill, and he gasped in pain as they blinked between for a second then back again. This was getting ridiculous!

"Hey Talis!" he shouted at the nearest bluerider. "Pay attention to what you're doing! Too much sharding Thread is getting through!" Nevermind that Talis was female and W'ill usually didn't get aggressive with girls...

Meepfur
for Talis and blue Holleth! XD

9. It’s all the little stuff that is causing you problems! One minute your airspace is clear, another minute you find it full of Thread. Where is your cover!? If you’re a bronze or brown rider, you can’t help but feel that the smaller colors aren’t doing their jobs in trying to keep your dragon safe. If you’re a white, green, or blue rider, you almost start to suspect the larger color you’re covering is just using you as some meat shield and not bothering to flame like they should. Whether it’s actually true, or paranoia from all the stress, you can feel your irritation levels rise. Aren’t you supposed to be on a team and work together? Ugh! Damage -3 HP.

[If this is your 3rd time rolling this prompt throughout the game, Quote a Wingmate to take Strife. For the rest of the game, you are feeling salty. You cannot save the quoted dragon from damage of any type and if they save you from damage, it will only half what you take (rounded down). Huff. The counter resets after you take Strife. You may carry this agitation with you post-game to work out (or duke out?!) in the Barracks.]

Diving in, Pellereth seemed to find some confidence in his ability to sear thread. I'lin calming down certainly helped, as the bronze weyrling veered to sear another clump of thread. The backsplash of ash was surprising, and though it stung at his hide, it wasn't as bad as the light scoring down his shoulder.

Yet as he veered, his eyes caught sight of ... [Damage Save]

Quote a weyrling and have them take -5 HP from burn damage! The counter then resets.]

Frustration mounted in Pellereth, shared across their bond, as the pair stared at the falling strands. How were they to know which to get? Surely they couldn't sear them all, not by themselves. That's why multiple wings were needed. Yet as Pellereth wheeled to finally sear another patch, a flash of riding straps and hide made him turn away sharply, and the patch tumbled down further.

I'lin patted his hide, cringing internally but gazing back up at the sky. They couldn't live and die with each cluster -- else they might actually live and die. Head in the moment, and needing to make less rookie mistakes (for a rookie).

Shaffit! Again!

Pellereth barked, having once again dove to sear a clump and have found himself out of his own airspace. The flash of hide startled them both, but thankfully had been saved by Pellereth's quick action.

The guilt edged at their minds, falling back in formation, and I'lin patted his beloved's hide. Easy, now, Pell. You got this, we've got this. Had his own insecurity and panic set off his dragon's own anxiety? The bronze weyrling took a shaky breath, trying to calm himself, and was rewarded with a wave of affection through their bond.

How can you do this for the rest of your life -- a life that could well be cut short!?! Thankfully, while you are having a moments panic, your dragon seems to know what to do--especially when the lurch to the side and dive to flame down a few patches of Thread. While this doesn't really calm you, and you're still sweating bullets beneath that helmet, you do begin to focus more on sweeping up the Thread. [If your roll this five times or more throughout the course of the game, your Panic will get the best of you and you will panic yourself as you jump Between. You may choose to 1. die and be lost forever 2. appear from Between way off course and take Major Damage -12 HP by jumping right in a nasty clump that you weren't even supposed to be near or 3. appear from Between way off course right in your fellows airspace. Quote a weyrling and give them Major Damage -12 HP for flaming them or startling them into a patch. You in trouble now. Encouragement has no effect on this outcome or counter though you can be saved from damage.]

Like waves on the shore, a tide of panic swept up again to smother Theo, leaving him shaking in his straps as Iweth once more guided them through the fall, scorching thread as his rider moved on auto-pilot. We're going to be fine, my Theo, you'll see! We'll be heroes, I promise, but I need your help...! It was unfair to the dragon, but thankfully with a little coaxing he was able to rouse Theo from his stupor once more in time to avoid calamity.

When Thread gets close, you make your move and flame it away. When you're tapped to deliver firestone, you do so with no trouble. This isn't so bad... Not at all! You're feeling good, and that's what matters. You and your dragon surely are naturals, baby! Good job! You're certain the Weyrlingmaster's have noticed your natural skill.

After such a rocky start, I'lin and Pellereth seemed to be able to relax into the motions. It wasn't too bad, being able to finally work out what were perhaps an awful case of first time jitters.

Easy.

Don't get cocky now.

We are born for this. This is our duty, and we are beginning to excel at it. What could be better?

Not dying.

Several botched throws in a row, all needing to be thrown new firestone sacks. It stung, immensely. Angering wingriders, a wingleader -- and Faranth, that botched throw to D'mon had his heart absolutely sinking, and hoping that all of his shortcomings weren't entirely on display for his dad to see today. He'd never been happier to return to his formation, heart still somewhere in the pits of his stomach.

Saves can nullify some or all of the damage, but the counter will continue to go up; Encouragement will reset the counter back to -1.

Rejoining back with their wing, it seemed that they'd gotten back just in time. Searing the thread that fell so heavily, but they'd overextended again, as another sliver of thread laced through Pellereth's wingsail like a hot knife through butter. Giving a bark, they snapped between once more to reappear, as the dragon gave a shudder at the pain.

Another tangle of thread seemed to appear from nowhere to threaten them, leaving the poor bronze yelping and skittering away between once more. Though normally calm and quite friendly, in his lingering distress, Theo couldn't help but find himself feeling slightly bitter towards his wingmates. Of course he understood logically that they were doing their bests, that they had their own dragons to worry about, but his heart was screaming that Iweth, only Iweth was important to him... and they were letting his poor perfect bronze get hurt! It left a thread of anger laced through his otherwise anxious demeanor that had not been there before.

Of course, you also find yourself suddenly dangling in some mighty precarious positions as your dragon avoids getting smacked by a tangle of Thread. The straps you so valiantly worked on are the only thing keeping you from plummeting to your death. Let’s hope Thread doesn’t latch onto those thick leathers… and if they do, that your backup security straps work! Quote a wingmate and take their damage instead. While it may hurt you, it also means you were able to save the day.

They could do this! Wheeling in, Pellereth flamed down another clump of thread, as I'lin felt a surge of pride for his dragon fighting on. A fighter's spirit not diminished in the face of thread -- not like his had been.

Pellereth wheeled, turning in a sharp maneuver that had I'lin's stomach turning slightly as suddenly the only thing keeping him from falling was those few precious straps he'd made. Yet the bronze spied another clump, heading straight for Alquemieth. His personal feelings on his family aside, Alquemieth was still his cousin, still family.

To his blundering horror, he needed to chew more stone, and there wasn't time.

Alquemieth! Watch out! Diving in, Pellereth wedged himself between his cousin and the falling clump of thread, unable to help the shriek that came as the clump bit into him--and bit in hard. It nested into his side, biting into I'lin's leg and threatening the very straps that he'd been thankful for, only to snap between and take the clump with him.

He'd reappeared a heartbeat later, shaking more profoundly, but at the very least happy and a touch proud to have protected another.
