Ohhhh I see! Can't blame you there, I'd be quite cautious myself about the rules. That's something I realize I need to be careful about in regards to roleplaying. While I refuse to write explicitly sexual things as a personal preference (which is very much against the rules in the first place once it hits above a PG-13 level), on the other hand I have no problem writing visceral, potentially disturbing, macabre scenes. And since I'm so desensitized to what many consider 'disturbing' in writing, that I am hardly surprised by even some of the most graphic carnage, so I never really think to myself, "Self? This isn't technically PG-13 and you could be banned for that." (I know how that could sound. To clarify: I'm not an abuser, nor am I abused, I just like to write horror/action/adventure and so on. o.o)
I suppose the takeaway from this is we have to be careful about observing the fine line about what is acceptable by Gaia rules standards, and what is not, huh?
And regarding the way we can customize our avatars, I recall when our little toons here were only standing in one position, at most they would change by holding something like a weapon or a plushie or whatever. What really stood out to me is a few times when I went from shop to shop, at the store fronts there were characters standing there with arms and legs altered in ways I didn't realize Gaia had pixeled for. I saw an avi with sexy pin-up model legs and thought to myself, 'This forum/game used to be so much more kid friendly, and you'd never see that before!' Whereas now I see they're appealing to another 'age range' in a sense.
I guess, based off that, I question whether or not they'll loosen up a few of the regulations on the whole 'PG-13' guideline because of how apparently counter-intuitive it's become. Our avatars can be practically naked wearing nothing but a maebari and twin strands of hair covering the nipples. <<' Or wearing something so close to the skin tone, they actually appear nude. I get that sex runs rampant in media, and there is easy access to basically whatever one wants on the internet, so maybe in hindsight its a moot point... |

Haha I see. I'm not a roleplayer or much of a writer in general, so I thankfully don't have to worry about that haha. I think I'm pretty much the opposite. I really don't mind sexually explicit things at all but I don't feel good looking at really gorey horror stuff. xD I can take simple horror but nothing over the top. But either way, since I don't roleplay and I'm like.. just as helpless at drawing, I don't have to worry about breaking those rules here. rofl I can see where it would be scary to just keep writing and not really think about the fact that you can't do certain things, but you're so IN the zone that you keep going lol.
Aaah yeah. Back in the day the only thing you could do is change your arm position and sit down. That was it. I think Gaia in general has stepped away from being "kid-like" because more often than not not a lot of kids come onto this type of site? There isn't much that would keep a KID interested. Young teens and so on though? For sure they'd be interested. As long as things are PG-13 though, I don't really mind that we have "sexier" or "gorier" items. And it's also the fact that many people who grew up with the site are adults now, considering it's like.. 13 years old? I forget haha. So they want to appeal to the masses who have stuck through them all these years as well.
I feel like they keep the PG-13 rating is because they still want to have many younger users to be able to use the site as well. As many adults we have that still play, many users are still under 18, and cutting them off wouldn't be a good thing. And really there is a whole lot under the PG-13 rating that you wouldn't even realize haha. Being "naked" in general isn't really bad, they mainly just don't want your avatar to depict sexual acts. Being plain naked isn't something that breaks that rating, but a sexual act is different. To me, I just feel the pixel dolls shouldn't put people that up in arms because they're not that detailed or anatomically correct, I mean hell, they don't even have nipples or genitals. It's a bare doll that at most people can appear to make them have hair in private areas, but that's about it. ; w; |

YES. I absolutely get in the zone when writing, and yeah it can get a little worrisome when a moderator goes after you for a post that's a bit too over the top.
That being said, I don't mind writing about sexuality/overall sensuality to a certain extent. My general distaste over the subject stems more from my disgust at how many fanfiction writers write up nothing but lemons or 'PWP', which (if you're not familiar with it) stands for 'plot what plot' or 'porn without plot'. There's SO much of that around, I am repulsed. I'm hardly a prude...quite opposite, if it weren't for the gutter, my mind would be homeless! But use the feathers, not the entire chicken, like burlesque yknow. XDD' And about as many roleplayers get into cybering, and I've dealt with more than my share of creepazoids propositioning me when I was on my old account, thankfully that hasn't happened lately. I'm not sure why I didn't report them, but I blocked them, that's for damn sure.
About the whole avatar-nude-concept, that's an interesting way to consider it. ^^ I never really thought of it in that sense, that it's just a non-anatomically correct doll. Though it really is all up to perspective. I guess I'm a little skewed, I have a friend who refuses to let her son(age 10) and daughter(age 13) make profiles on Gaia even though they've pleaded with her about it, but when her and her hubby checked the site and poked around, they found a few too many people whose characters were practically naked except for an artfully placed item or two and they didn't want their kids getting ideas, especially their daughter who apparently already has extremely impressionable body image issues.
I was asked to hang out at my their house and make sure the kids got home from school okay a few times (their parents like to make sure they don't sneak off, lol) and already both have asked me if they can make an account, and I'm standing there feeling a little odd about saying no, when I had the Gaia app on my tablet. Kind of hypocritical. rofl
Every so often when I check out somebody's profile, I'll happen across somebody who says, 'I'm 18, i know I'm too old to play gaia' and I roll my eyes because I'm 27, and I've been on Gaia on and off since 2005 in high school and I'm clearly not the only one. There really are quite a lot of us now as you say; so it does make sense that they switched perspective to make it friendly towards more than one audience. I'm glad they did, it's more fun to dress up this way. :3 |

Haha I know what you mean. I don't mind a good PWP every now and then, but I very much appreciate something with a story. I want build up, and like.. good build up. Not something you know someone rushed just so they could write the porn. xD Ah that must suck when someone gets on your case about now wanting to do that. Cybering isn't allowed either, so it's like.. not only do they want you to do something you don't want to, but it's against the rules, so it's even worse. XP
Ah well, if it's someone parent who wont let them on there isn't much that can be done sadly. Like, maybe the 10 year old is a little young, considering the things you can read on here, but the 13 year old might be able to be on here no problem. Though I don't think the 10 year old could make an account anyway. I don't think they do the parental permission thing anymore? I don't know that for a fact though.
Eeeh, I wouldn't think it's hypocritical since you're so much older. It's just something they can't do right now. Later on they could probably manage to get on, maybe their parents will care less once they're older. xD
Haha yeah, when someone says they're too old to be on here and they're like.. 17 or 18, I'm just like what? And I'm only 22. So who knows how I'm gonna feel when I get older. I do enjoy that they appeal to their adult base as well, and do it in a way that still accommodates the PG-13 rating. Everything else is just up to the parents of young teens who want to get on haha. |

That's just it, so many of them decide they want a porn and that's that. Nothing but brainless smut. Granted, I'm aware that there are some who do some plotting and build up to that point where the clothes are flyin', and I can sympathize with having an image in your head and wanting to act on it and write everything down while possessed of the motivation to do so. 3nodding And no one is twisting anybody's arm to read PWPs anyhow, right? That's all personal preference.
You're right though, I shouldn't feel weird about the whole Gaia thing, I'm aware its their parent's rule not mine. And if I'm going to look after them when mom and dad are out of the house, I have to back them up on their decisions about their kids. But I felt bad when the teenage girl picked up my tablet and looked through it and saw the app, then got all huffy and mad and accused me of being a hypocrite and wanted to make an account because all her friends are doing it and she's being left out. I said no, she stormed upstairs yelling something accusatory when she slammed her bedroom door (I'm not sure. I think I heard a 'c u next tuesday' in there somewhere, I hope I was hearing things and that's not the case).
Meh. Teenagers are unstable at best, I know enough not to care what kind of tantrum she throws, no matter how bad I felt at first...that little flip-out of hers pretty much cleared it up for me and I'm not so worried anymore. As a matter of fact, her 10-year-old younger brother is calmer and more easygoing than she is, isn't that kinda funny? |

I suppose that's true haha. I think it's easier for me to read PWP because it's usually fanfiction. It's characters I know the backstory of already and if they can make sure their personalities show even during those types of stories, I can get with it. It's just that it's not ALL I want to read lol. AU's are my best friend, I like reading fanfictions that have the characters in completely different worlds lol, and even in their canonverse as long as the person does it well. But yeah, it's all down to personal preference. I'm not gonna get on someone who just wants to write porn, or someone who just wants to read it, just like I wouldn't get on someone for wanting a story to go along with the smut, or just a story in general with no smut.
Haha wow, it definitely sounds like she threw quite the tantrum. It's nice that the boy seems easygoing though, means whatever negativity she's picked up on hasn't rubbed off on him yet (and hopefully never! Lol). You're definitely not a hypocrite though, you can't go against her parent's rules and she needs to realize that. You're not gonna just sneak behind their back's and help her create an account. You've been trusted to take care of them by their rules, of course you wouldn't break that trust. |
