Maxy grinned at his vague reply and turned to start walking.
"So why couldn't we go in before?"
She asked, curious if he'd answer her in the slightest.
She walked with a casual slowness to her, as not to break the conversation.

Cautiously, she entered the kitchen/dining area again, confident she find the others.

Reticence made an odd, strangled noise. "We...just...couldn't," he replied once he got his breath back. That subject closed as far as he was concerned, he walked with her into the kitchen.

Curiosity glanced up and smiled at them. "So you did get him out," he said cheerfully. "Took you long enough."

Naïveté smiled shyly, but didn't look away from the machine she was currently pressing buttons on while it beeped and whirred. "Should be done soon," she said softly.

Maxy blinked. Really? That was the best he's got?

Wow, for4 a writer he didn't have a very good imagination...at least not when it came to lying, anyway.

"It wasn't exactly easy." She shrugged, walking over towards Curiosity. She didn't sound unhappy about it at all. If anything, she sounded a bit excited.

She snuck glances between Naivete and Curiosity, trying to figure it out, although she was sure she knew it already.
Hmm....

"So what are you making?" She asked Naivete curiously. These customs were so odd and new to her.

What need was there to lie? Reticence figured he'd just tell her the truth and keep some things back. But keeping them back basically meant telling her nothing except "Because." Which was essentially what he had done.

Naïveté hit a few more buttons and the machine let out a squeal. She giggled. "I don't know exactly. I guess we'll see!"

Curiosity rolled his eyes and smiled. "I gave her the stuff for waffles, I think. Those flat things with the holes in them? We'll see if we managed to get what we started with."

Reticence's faint smile didn't go unnoticed as he moved up to join the other two.

This was the kind of day that was so unusual for them. It was nice to have it, even just once in a while.

"Oh my gosh! Waffles!?" the excitement heated her cheeks and made goose bumps on her skin.

"I haven't had waffles in ages!" she clapped excitedly and sat down near curiosity.

Smiling, she couldn't have been happier with the moment. Even Naïveté was happy and smiley.

Naïveté fiddled with the machine some more, until the machine's squeaks and whistles started to sound irritable. Then Reticence casually got up and wandered over to stand beside her, looking at the controls over her shoulder.

"Here," he said lightly. "Just hit this."

"What? But...ooooohhhhhhh." She hit the button indicated obediently.

"Now just leave it alone. It'll like you better for it."

Naïveté giggled, but she followed him back to the bench and sat down.

Reticence looked around the room briefly, then settled himself at the end of the table. Distancing himself, however slightly. Maybe he didn't really know how to handle the truth that he was different now.

Maybe none of them did.

A frown threatened to tug at her lips when reticence satat the opposite end from everyone else.
Well, that just simply wouldn't do.

Casually getting up, she moved to sit next to him, pretending to give Curiosity and Naïveté looks like she thought they wanted to be closer together. Whether that was true or not she had no freaking idea, but it would give her a visual excuse and therefore no words needed.

"So what kind of machine is that anyway?"
It was like nothing she'd ever seen before.

Reticence gave Maxy a strange look when she moved across to sit down with him. But he didn't say anything about it, noticing her not-so-surreptitious glance at Curiosity and Naïveté.

"Well..." He looked a little uncomfortable, and Naïveté cheerfully stepped in for him.

"It's a cooker," she said. "It does most things. But it doesn't cook things that are technically supposed to be raw, like fruit slush and veggie slush, so if we want to reconstitute those we use the other one over there." She pointed across the room at a black iron thing that looked like a small metal octopus sculpture, if the sculptor in question had badly needed his eyes checked.

"I should show you how to use them. You might need to know one day." Maybe the words weren't meant to sound like she really meant 'one day we might not be here to do it', but the way Reticence looked away and Curiosity looked down after it was said suggested that no one was immune to the thought.

Maxy played oblivious to the sad and dangerous undertone to Naivete's words, and instead leaned forward to get a better look at the machine.
It sure was an ugly thing, not that she would ever say that out loud.

She leant with her hands holding her chin, and a thoughtful look came over her. She was very calm right then. It was very unlike her, or at least it was to anyone that had seen her mood swings.

"So what do you guys do all day?" It seemed pretty boring, so far. By now she was kind of hoping she'd be given chores or something. Drawing was her passion, but one can only do it for so long at one time.

Reticence shrugged. Curiosity took over this time. "Whatever needs doing, basically," he said lightly. "Tasks if there are any to be done. Taking care of the house and ourselves. Practice our arts. If any guest shows up, look after them. Do the master's..." he trailed off for a second, "...experiments. He doesn't seem to care what we do otherwise, as long as we're pleased with the results and it doesn't destroy the house."

Not that anyone ever had destroyed the house.

At least, Curiosity didn't think so.

"Why? Did you want to do something?"

Then the machine dinged, and Curiosity leaped up to go open up the cooker. A billow of steam came out of the opening, which Curiosity seemed to have expected since he stood a ways away from it. He came back to the table with a pile of skinny brown things that looked like a weird pancake-waffle hybrid and put them down proudly. "Food!" he announced.

"Do you think the master would mind if we played games?" only then did she consider that they may not even know any basic games.
"Do you guys know how to play hide and seek? Or is tree a chess set here?" she tilted her head to the side curiously.
All thoughts came to a partial halt when she saw the food. It looked so odd! She was hungry, though, so she would try it.
She wouldn't be the first to though. She sat back, waiting for someone else to take the first pick.

Reticence blinked, a little confused. "...Games?" As far as he knew, there had never been anything called games. "What?"

Curiosity caught on a little faster, probably because he'd been one of several children. Taking a couple of the brown flat things off the plate, putting them on his own plate, and then offering the serving plate to Maxy, he said cheerfully, "No chess. But I'm sure I could make one, if you want one badly. No shortage of material."

He didn't answer the hide-and-seek question, mostly because he'd never heard of such a game before. Naïveté said nothing at all.

"You could really make one, Curiosity? You're so talented!" Maxy practically squeeled with delight and nodded.
Taking the plate, she put one instantly into her mouth and grabbed only 1 more for herself before passing the plate on to Reticence. She wasn't very hungry, now. This was an oddity, since she was always hungry....at least for as long as she could remember. The first one must have really filled her up.

She leaned on her elbows and looked at Reticence, "You kinow....Games? Fun? Ringing any bells?" She faught the urge to giggle. It just seemed so ubsurd for someone to not know what games were.

She looked at them all for a moment before chewing her bottom lip, "And no one answered my question about hide and seek." Sure, it was kind of a childish game, but it was fun none-the-less, and fun was exactly what this place lacked.
Not to mention that she was amazing at the game. She loved to explore, and was small enough to fit in a lot of small spaces. She was a hiding queen, in all of her 5'2" glory.

Curiosity blushed a little. "Thanks," he said, a little shyly. He wouldn't mind making one, though it would be difficult. But he was sure he could do it, and it would be an effort that would make him happy - it would be nice to make something that people could actually use.

Reticence took only one for himself before passing the plate on to Naïveté. His eyes were perfectly serious and very calm as they turned back to Maxy. "No, we don't have to ring any bells. There aren't any bells in the house," he replied simply.

Of course. If he hadn't spent any time on Earth, it would make sense that Earth's phrases wouldn't be known to him. He thought she meant it literally.

Naïveté was the first one to shyly answer Maxy's question. "I...don't know what you mean," she said at last, quietly. "I've never heard of...hide and seek?"

She and Curiosity, like most children, had spent their entire lives hiding and trying to avoid being found. And they had failed.

How could such a game be fun to people like them?
