Valac's head snapped to the man when he finished speaking and Valac begun bearing down on the man, "What other people?"
PostPosted: Wed Dec 07, 2016 11:40 pm

The man would take the coin from Kuori, surprised at her sudden showing of generosity. "Oh, the scratches are just right here." The man points to a spot on the floor. Kuori recognizes it as being where the petrified statues of the soldiers once were. She could deduce from what the man had said that the guards must have kept the family away, then dragged the statutes out under cover of night to avoid notice. The man would scratch his head. "It looks like something heavy was dragged here, but I have no idea what it could have been. None of my stuff was missing. You know, we don't usually get adventurers here in town, so people might find it a little weird for you to come knocking around on their doors..."

When Valac bore down on the man, he shrank away from him and his children ran shrieking upstairs. He sputtered out his next words. "Look, I don't know who they were! They obviously weren't from around here, but they were very official looking and had on blue tabards with a symbol I didn't recognize. They just left town this morning so I'm sure if you ask around someone will know something about them. Now, will you please just leave me and my family alone! I don't know anything else, nor to I care to know. Whatever's going on doesn't involve me!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After Twyla answered, a glimmer of recognition seemed to come into the lieutenants eyes. "Ah, that's right, they mentioned a gnome. I was one of the few guards that wasn't there on scene that day, but I was told three adventurers helped us safely clear the house. You should have just told me directly. We are deeply grateful for your help! Unfortunately, the petrified guards and citizen are no longer here. They are being taken somewhere to be cured, but they just left this morning so if you leave now I'm sure you can catch up with them and save everyone a bunch of time."
The guard lieutenant would stand up and shout down the stone hall. "Hey, those adventurers that helped us before have returned with a way to un-petrify our men. Take them to your people so we can n** this in the bud and finally get our captain back."
Out of a nearby room emerged three men clad completely in impressive looking full plate. Not an inch of their skin was exposed. They wore enclosed helmets that had odd, shaded lenses in the eye sockets. Over their armor they wore ornate blue tabards which Revenge and Twyla would immediately recognize as bearing the emblem of Aria. Revenge could feel his wife stiffen up behind him, but she says nothing.
The men would come forward and the one in the middle would speak out, his voice somewhat distorted by his helmet. "We only take orders from our own captain..." The man would then pause to look over Revenge, Abby and Twyla. "But I feel in this case we can make an exception. We will take you to the petrified men. On our way there we have some questions we would like to ask you about what you might have seen in the house you cleared."
The Gladesdale guard lieutenant waves his hand dismissively, obviously annoyed by the the man's attitude. "Whatever, we already told you everything they told us, so there is no new information to be had. You agreed to help us return our men to normal, so help us."
Bluff of 29 to not give any tells nor show any sign of recognition as I lie to the enemy. Thank you dice for not betraying me.
"Huh. What's this, some sort of joint effort?" Revenge would say, feigning indifference in his voice. "As I just explained, two of us didn't even get near that house," he would say, nodding his head upward to indicate his wife behind him. "Dragging us along just so we can tell you we don't know anything seems like a waste of everyone's time. As for this one," he would gesture towards Twyla. "Well, after riding for days, getting mauled by a dragon... thing... and riding days back, and having trouble with bandits as part of our journey, a band led by..."
Revenge would make small circles in the air with one hand as he thought, trying to bring up the name. "Dryad-Foot Grock!... I'm hesitant to let her and that wand out of my sight, after we put so much effort into getting it. The last thing I want is those bandits to make one last strike and somehow make off with that item, and all that blood, sweat, and... er... more blood... be for nothing."
Offering a (forced) half-smile and a shrug, he'd bring the point home. "It just seems easier for all parties involved if we can just get the guardsmen being transported turned around and returned here. We've quite literally just got back into town, we'd appreciate the opportunity to settle for a bit before we get whisked off again." To assuage any concerns, he added, "Don't worry; after all the trouble we went through to help these people, we're not going anywhere anytime soon."
Valac stopped bearing down on the man as he answered but Valac did not recognise what he described. The man was protesting but was cooperating so Valac decided not to pursue him further on this.
Valac begun leaving and just as he reached the door way where Petra and Kuori were Valac stopped. Raising a thumb at the man and with a forced smile that only managed to accidentally bare fangs at the man Valac said, "Thanks. Good Job."
Then Valac stepped outside looking like he was about grab anyone walking pass to interrogate them meanwhile as he eyed who to grab he said aloud to Kuori and Petra, "Who are these bastards in blue looking into this?"
Twyla nodded cheerfully as Revenge spoke, though her heart felt a sudden freeze of fear. Aria! Right here! It was good that Abby had gotten out of the town when she had, but now they'd walked her right back into Aria's clutches. And what of Valac, Kuori and Petra? Were there Aria guards there that had snatched them up already? Twyla was suddenly desperate to get away from these sinister, plated men and check on her other friends.
Revenge's tact sounded good, and Twyla opted to support it. She stashed the wand away on her person before letting out a large, sleepy sigh, and speaking up.
"Oh my Garl, right? We're exhausted after our trip! We traveled for days! If the poor petrified people just left, it'd be awesome if they could be brought to us. I mean, they live here and all, so they're going to be coming back to Gladesdale eventually anyways! Best to bring them back now, so we can fix them up right quick and then they can get back to their lives. We'll be happy to wait here; we simply CANNOT head out right now. Like he said, we just got in!"
((Diplomacy of 28 to convince the guards to bring the petrified people back or at least give us some time to regroup.))
Upon Revenge's request, the heavily armored Aria soldier crosses his arms. "I'm not going to march all the way out to the rest of the division and ask them to turn around just on your words alone. If you want to use that wand to turn these statues back to flesh, you got to come with me. Otherwise, you can wait until we do it ourselves. A few days isn't going to make a difference to them."
It was hard to get a read on the soldiers with the full encompassing helms they wore, but after Twyla made her plea they seemed to relent a bit. "If you are all that exhausted, we will give you an hour to rest, but if you are not back by then I won't be taking you out to them at all. If we wait too much longer than that, we won't be able to catch up with them anyways."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Petra, who had not bothered to enter the house, but was listening by the door, looked visibly shaken by the revelation of this information. As she spoke to answer Valac's question, her voice was trembling. "N-no. It can't be. T-they couldn't have found out so quickly! How, how could they? Oh, but it's them, it's them, it's them... It has to be. Aria is the only nation I know that has blue tabards. W-we have to warn the others. I-if Aria is already here, we're probably already too late. We need to escape while we can!"

"A whole division, eh? Yes, that does sound inconvenient. Even you must agree with that," Revenge would say, turning his head to address the Lieutenant.

"I think an hour is... probably... sufficient," Revenge would say slowly, frowning. "After what we went through, I'd hate to think our efforts were wasted. But... oh!"

Turning fully to face Twyla, he would bring down a clenched fist into his open hand. "Twyla, you're good with magic! Does being restored leave them with some sort of fatigue or disorientation? If so, it would be difficult for them to make the journey back here, even with us escorting them. Maybe we have can some of the guards here in Gladesdale come with us! A wagon or two and some able-bodied men. Plus, I'm sure they'd like to see some familiar faces when they're returned to flesh, so they are less alarmed."

After her response, the Paladin would look to the Lieutenant for his approval about his proposition.

Kuori nodded, "Aria was my thought too. We should probably still check Abby's place, they may have ransacked it." She looked the directions from wence they had arrived and said, "But they may have left somebody behind, so we might need the others, and if not, we are going to need to play catch up."

"If you want to go find the others go ahead. This Aria don't know me so I'll go check on Abby's house." Stated Valac raising an eyebrow at the two's sudden reaction.

Twyla paused, deep in thought. "Actually, I don't really know this kind of magic that great, so I can't be sure. I guess it'd be better to be safe than sorry! We need to get some support system out there to help them! And I agree, Mr. Revenge, who better than people they'll recognize?"

She looked to the Lieutenant too, sporting a hopeful grin and puppy eyes. Well, it couldn't hurt.

((I rolled an 8 Heal check in the presence of the DM to determine if there are aftereffects from the wand. So... I actually don't know!))

The lieutenant would respond while looking through his stack of papers. "Um, well, I'm not sure we have that many people to spare right now. Captain was usually the one to make the schedules but since he was suddenly, uh, left unable to do so, we've been struggling through ourselves. I might have a free person to send out..."

The lead Arian soldier would cut in. "There is no need. They will already be surrounded by plenty of men to assist them. We have our own medics after all. Seeing a familiar face won't have any effect on their recovery, and, frankly, paladin, I don't see what all your concern is. We are doing you a favor and you seem determined to make it as complicated as possible. We leave in an hour, or not at all--starting now. I remind you we don't actually need your assistance, so keep that in mind before you make any more silly requests of us."

The Arian soldier with his two companions turn away from Revenge and Twyla and begin to head back to the room they came out of. They seem done with the conversation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Petra seemed completely shaken now. Her moody, aloof attitude had completely disappeared. She was much more reminiscent of the terrified little girl she had been when they first met her. Each of her sentences seemed to be a struggle for her. "Y-you think they are already there? W-well, I guess that would make sense. Usually Abby would make all the decisions in a time like this. I... I'm not really sure what do."
"..."
Sometimes, Revenge worried that people didn't even recognize the symbol of Sehanine that he wore around his neck, mistaking it for one of Kord or of Bane, or some other deity that cared less for the well-being of all.
He would not address the soldiers, and assuming no one else did either, he would address the Lieutenant. "Sorry that we couldn't be more help to you or your men." Looking to the others, he would turn towards the door. "Let's go."
If allowed to get to the wagon uninterrupted, he would say nothing as he collected his weapons and re-armed himself. He wouldn't be letting these back down anytime soon.
Kuori gently grabbed Petra's hand. "Valac, we are not splitting up. These people are the most vile and underhanded people I have ever encountered, and I grew up in a tribe that fought Drow on a regular basis. If they stayed behind, then it's not going to be in a fair situation. They are Abby and Petra, and you know what they are capable of, they will be prepared to overwhelm their power , and if you were lucky, they would kill you then and there, but if they saw what you become in a fight they would probably capture you instead." She finally turned her attentions to Petra. "I killed Nathaniel, his soldiers, and his lieutenants to save Ying and Corsica, and I will do the same to anyone that tries to take you. Just stay where I can see you and anyone that tries to snatched you gets an arrow to the face." She mimes with her free hand a slow motion index finger to the temple, complete with explosion noises and blood squirts before laying it flat over her forehead in woe as she faked death and said, "Oh why .... did I decide ... to work for a bunch of assholes." She let out a final "Bleeeeeggh." As she fended death for two seconds and said, "If you are dead set ..." buh dum cha "on going to Abby's, then I can leave an arrow here to point the way for them, but if it's empty, you and I need to get some horses. Abby may have to ditch the cart if we want to catch up."
"All right, well, we're off then!" Twyla curtseyed again, and went off with Revenge, following him back to the wagon.
Once they were safely away from anyone who might overhear, she would say to him, "I think maybe we should find the others, don't you?"
Revenge would grip the edge of the wagon tightly, digging the fingertips of his gauntlets into the wood, his eyes now wide with panic.
"They're... they're taking them. A whole division..."
Gritting his teeth, his gaze would lower, as his tail would lash back and forth. But, he would inhale audibly, hold his breath, and then exhale slowly. Composing himself, he would turn around.
"This is bad. I don't know how to proceed. I... yes, we should find the others. We can't just let them take more people for their twisted experiments, under the guise of helping them. The best idea I had was surrounding ourselves with guardsmen when we confronted them, but that's not possible, apparently."
Frowning, and lowering his voice after scanning the surrounding area quickly, he would add, "The only other idea I had was to take these men out now, and try to rescue the petrified guardsmen under the cover of darkness, if we can sneak our way into their camp, but I don't know how feasible that plan is..."
