Should I leave the filter on or off while I pray and wait for it to settle? I assumed running water would slow it from settling but maybe the filter would catch some of the dust.

Leave the filter on. You want the dust out of there, not settled with the sand.
K, filter is ON. Might pick up the plants tomorrow. There seems to be some progress with the dust in the tank. And then I may INQUIRE about reserving a fish. Maybe I can pay for him now and have them hold him for me. My only concern is... well I'm getting bright colored fish right. Platties, either hawaii or I saw bumblebee platties that were equally nice and yellow lol. But don't betta's go after bright colored stuff? Like this betta flared at my yellow nails lol.

Flaring is one thing, attacking is another. It's more the flashy fins than the bright colors. I kept Spangles in with cherry barbs and he flared at them if they bothered him, but never attacked them. That said, I don't have experience with a betta and platies. It should work, but it does depend on the bettas attitude.

Ok... well they had ZERO imbellis when I went. So what happens if I bring a Beta home and he's attacking my fish? I don't have room or money to be setting up separate tanks for fish that don't get along. Can I return them if it's like within 24hrs?

It depends on the store. Most will take fish back at any time and give you store credit, but not all. You'll have to ask them their return policies.

I'm STARTING to get annoyed with this sand. Is it possible I just got really bad sand. Like I have re "washed" it another maybe 7 times already. I am not seeing any progress.

Okay, maybe it's a LIL bit better. But... GAWD I rreeaalllyy washed the ******** out of this tank and it is still cloudy. Letting the filter take over for a while.

Oh, I also picked up two new buckets at the dollar store. They're a bit smaller, but that suits me cause it means carrying them is easy. I got two so I can tag team lol. One for the siphone while the other is used to fill up the tank. Anyway, I gotta time how fast they fill up and set an alarm cause it goes pretty fast and I had lots of near floods by not paying attention lol

mmkay, there seems to be progress, but I can't help but wonder how do I know when I'm done? Cause it will always kick up SOME dust if I stir it wont it? I assumed when watching this video. So seriously how do I know when it's good enough??? Cause it's looking really clear now, if I stir it it will get cloudy but settle quickly. I will try to get a video to demonstrate.

So I decided to wash the sand ONE LAST TIME before putting my decorations in. For good measure. Turned off the filter cause the water level was gona go below it. When I was done I turned the filter back on... only now it kind of sounds like it's dying confused I dunno if I pulled something loose, if anyone has any clue why it's being so retardedly noisy. It's like moaning, on and off. evil

Sooooo, dad and I think it's an issue with the motor. He thinks a bearing might be loose or something but since it's a closed unit. CHANCES are, he can't open it to fix it. Which means there's a good chance I will be forced into buying a new one. scream

Maybe the water level inside it is too low? It might also have too much of the dust in the motor, you might have to clean it out.

I'd love to see pics of the Betta you are thinking about getting. biggrin As long as he doesn't attack the fish, he should be fine, chances are, as long as they don't look similar to a betta, he probably won't attack them. smile Still wouldn't hurt to monitor them.

WAIT!!!! HALT! Okay. Is it a hang on back filter? Take the filter pad out. Take the tube and the impeller out. Fill your bucket with water, and shake everything clean inside the bucket (don't shake the bucket, shake the items, including the filter it's self, just keep the cord out of the water. I usually try to keep the motor out as well.). Then put it back together. Before you plug the filter in, fill it with water. Sometimes it's hard for them to pull the water in unless you do that. It should work. Give it a minute or so. If it doesn't work, try adjusting everything.

The water is definitely NOT too low. But...it seems to make less and less noise. Like it'll run quiet and every 2 minutes eeerrrggghhhh. Then quiet again. So mmaayybbeee, if I let it run a bit, it will calm down. Cause when I first plugged it it was just non stop eeerrrrgggghhhhhhhhhhhh

I will for sure take pics of the fishy if he's still there. I HOPE no one has taken him since he's not actually IN the betta display.

It might just have to work its way out. It sounds like the filter is getting better. biggrin

uuummmm, I don't really know what any of those things are. It definitely had issues sucking the water at first. But it SEEMS to be kind of getting better on it's own. So ima let it run for a while and see where it's at tomorrow.

I haven't heard a noise from the filter since I got home. Although it did wake me up a few times last night lol. So yay for that. I threw in about a teaspoon of fish flakes. CYCLING HAS COMMENCED! This week I pick up driftwood, plants and test kit. Plus see if the betta I want is still there.

Also, not sure if I mentioned. The heater I have which is supposedly good for UP TO 5gallons, seems to do a good job of heating this tank. With the lights on I had the temp at 80. So saved some money there.

Plus I finally got rid of that old 15G which I traded for a 5. So my friend's turtle who was in a 10G will now be in a 15 and I have a spare tank.
