Darcy gave one long-suffering sigh at the sudden sound of phones going off.
He answered the wolf girl's query with a curt nod. "It is, and isn't- it's a black and white artist's interpretation of the human sky, on a cloudy night and partial moon. Darkness, with the barest hint of light. For creatures who rely on FEAR to survive, each night is a new beginning, rife with opportunity."
He clicked; a new slide.
"In the beginning, there was man, and darkness. Not just shadows, but total absence of light- before modern technology, before torches and lamps and flashlights. The moonless night. And when man observed the darkness; there became FEAR. This is all basic information - not very different from what you've perhaps seen in a Scareling Primer. FEAR is not restricted to darkness, but fear of the dark is instinctual; it is one of man's first fears, besides the fear of death, and fear of oblivion. It is a child's fear, but one that many humans may never grow out of."
He dimmed the lights further, skipping to the next slide.
"Fear of the darkness combines these elements- the fear of death; of oblivion, or the unknown. Primordial humankind once huddled around their fires, their sources of light, and stared blindly into the dark; and they were afraid."
"It is in these shadows, that this FEAR began to take many forms. It defined us. As mankind grew- so did their FEAR, from indefinite thoughts and ideas to more abstract concepts; some of their own invention. Our shape is a direct reflection of the fears of man; our culture derived as a perversion of theirs. We are their dark mirror. However, there are many kinds of men, just as there are many kinds of Halloweeners. Each of us has our own culture, our own mythos based on our inception."
He glanced up from his presentation, pointing at the three students who'd checked their phones.
"You three. Can you tell me what FEAR you believe your species or race was based upon? Please, share with the class." He looked at them expectantly, before glancing around the rest room.
"If any of the rest of you would like to add to the discussion, feel free."

Danny blinked as the teacher stares and asked her a question. Unlike the others maybe, Danny did no have a good pokerface. She didn't even think to hide her phone under her desk, to disguise the trouble she was making.
Luckily for her, the teacher asked an incredibly easy question! At least, Danny thought it was easy. "Oh! Oh! Fire! Fire made fire demons." Hopefully the teacher wasn't expecting a lengthy, detailed answer, because that was about all Danny would be able to come up with.
Unfortunately for her, and fortunately for the teacher, she'd missed the entire section on humans clinging to fire for light. She would've had quite a few comments to say about how fire was very, very scary.
She looked to Amphi and smiled, pleased with her answer. Then she looked back down at her phone and returned to texting, lesson not learned.
