I paused, shoving the king roughly into a nook and I stepped in after him, pressing myself against him for a moment. With a hissed whisper, the darkness of the shadowed palace collected into an unnaturally dark shadow around us. It was... cold. Very cold. Like being seeped in creeping ice.
A guard walked past, oblivious to our presence.
When he was gone, I peered back out of the nook. Seeing the coast was clear, I started dragging him again.
I just turned that assassin into a knife, I whispered, just loud enough for Reguna to hear as I kept an eye our for guards. I peered into his memories to find that the senate hired him to kill you! He was a master too; the only reason I got the drop on him was because he wasn't expecting you to be hanging with a magic user.
Hiding in nooks or small rooms continued like this until we reached the doors to the gardens. I glanced up; night was starting to fall, which means that we had until moonrise to get over the garden wall. This was the guard rotation time for the garden, and it was usually empty this time of day due to it. At least, it had been last time I was in the castle.

Reguna couldn't say he enjoyed being dragged around. His face was dark, as he was in thoughts. An assassin sent by the senate. The senate. His well-trusted advisors. His father's well-trusted advisors. He scoffed at the thought. This was the government that his country was built on? Could Reguna trust Rakil to say such irreverence? No, that would mean doubting Rakil. Doubting their very own bond as friends. Reguna kept his indecision in his thoughts and only there, not wanting to voice his incertitude.
At last, we stood in the gardens. I stopped Rakil by the arm, looking into her face with a serious expression. "Wait, wait. If we're keeping a low profile, then wouldn't a missing assassin sent by the senate to kill a king be somewhat…alarming?" He paused, looking around. No one was in the gardens at this time of night. He then looked back to Rakil. "Couldn't you have erased his memory? Or stupefied him instead of turning him into a knife?" This wasn't the first time an assassin was sent to kill Reguna. None of them obviously succeeded, and Reguna learned early on that he shouldn't take offense to it. Assassins were something every king dealt with, and Reguna had trained in preparation of one. But the fact that he knew the senate had sent this particular assassin concerned him. Was this the first time? Reguna had a feeling it wasn't. And if this particular assassin didn't return with a report of the situation, then the senate would know that the king was not only gone, but had managed to make an assassin disappear as well.

I looked up at the wall and ran at it, scaling the wall easily and vaulting over it.
In a flurry or red cloth and fur I landed on my feet and looked about, pressing my back to the wall. There was trees here, no guards patrolling.
I put my hands to my face, cupped in a certain way, and blew into them. The sound... it sounded kind of like an owl.
After a few moment, up clopped Astra, my mare. She had pale golden fur in the moonlight and a soft white mane. She whinnied. I stroked her nose before putting a foot in the stirrup of her saddle and easily mounting her. She pranced, lightly, and I leaned down to offer a hand to Reguna to help him up behind me.

We rode quietly out of the capitol city. There was no one awake to see our passing, save for the very light underworld element that was present everywhere... The thieves and others who knew better then to mess with the two of us.
It was like Deja vu. Once again, I was riding out of the capital on Astra's back, on a mission to track down a magical user. But this time I had my best friend behind me on my horse. How any more parallels to my life as a knight would I find?
Once we passed the houses and they vanished on the road behind us, with only the trees to witness our travel through the country, I glanced back briefly to Reguna.
You've probably never traveled like this before... hold on to me tight. We're going to put some distance between us and this city and any pursuers. Ok?
I turned back to the front, letting Reguna get ready. I reached up and ran my fingers fondly through Astra's silver mane. After a moment the mane seemed to shudder, then start to rise upward on it's own. Her name lit, and turned from normal silky fur to glorious silver flames. The flames didn't burn us, and after a moment a horn rose from her forehead as her hooves seemed to glow silver as did her eyes.
During my time studying alone in the tower, my horse had turned into a Firemane. T'was the damnest thing. But she was VERY fast now, if she wanted to be...

I smiled as I held on tight with my legs as Astra sped up in her run. The world started to blur as she lowered her body as she galloped. Reguna could see, if he opened his eyes, a bee hovering near a flower, and he could clearly count it's wingbeats...
I leaned down and pressed my hand against her flank as I dropped the reigns.
To the west now, girl. Let's disappear!
Astra leapt over a log, and her hooves left a trail of flame in her wake as she continued to climb into the air. The world was still as we ascended into the air towards the sky.
With her long, careful, and calculated steps we rocketed off towards the west.
~~~
I guided Astra down smack dab in the center of a wood. We had traveled a third of the way already; probably mere minutes had passed since we had left. No need to push Astra too hard too fast; she was used to carrying one body, not two. I had kept a hand on Reg's arms which were wrapped around my waist securely the entire way.
I glanced about at the wood. The woods were dry and full of brush, and I had been worried she'd start a fire if she continued her dance of fire over the wood.
Thankfully, I knew there was a small village nearby, where I would be welcome; I knew the place well. I glanced back to Reguna to see how he was doing, before urging her on towards the village. As she trotted on complacently, I ran my fingers through her flame mane again, and she once again took on her mundane horsey appearance.
It took not five minutes later when we reached the village. I guided my steed to the inn, where I glanced back at Reguna.
This will be a safe place for the night... need to give Astra some rest.
I followed Reguna over to the counter as I lowered my hood. The innkeeper smiled broadly at me, having had my patronage before.
"New companion?" He asked, conversationally. "It's always nice to see you again, Raine."
Old friend. I replied with an amiable smile, as I leaned against the counter with a sway of my hips.
"Well, we only have one room available, but it does have two beds. It's all yours, Raine and her old friend." He turned and picked up a key, tossing it. I reached up and caught it easily.
Thanks! I said with a smile and a wink to the innkeeper, tossing some gold coins onto the counter. I twirled the ring with the key on a finger as I lead the way to the stairs.
"I'll send some food up in a few Raine!" Called the innkeeper as I climbed the stairs. "On the house!"
Thank you~! I called back sweetly.
