G'len headed for the hatching as soon as he'd heard the dragon's hum. He'd always liked attending hatching, one of the great perks of working as a Crafter in the Weyr, though that was exactly what had gotten him in trouble the last time.

Am I Trouble? Absinth asked, delighted.
Well.. G'len teased back. She dropped him off at the ledge, then flew up to watch from the hatching from above. Landing first on one of the highest ledges, she stopped to look around. There were still many below that to be filled in, but she didn't know anyone.. Finally, spotting an old clutchmate, she swooped down and landed beside the bronze. Good day Kindeth! she purred happily.

G'len meanwhile, didn't fuss so much about his seat. You couldn't be choosey with a hatching really. Soon enough the stands would all be full and it would be standing room only. Best to grab a seat whereever you found it.

The one you caught is here. Absinth noted, as she peered across the sands. He was surprised she remembered what he looked like, or could tell from such a height.
Oh? G'len replied conversationally. Though of course he had known that. He was a candidate after all.
If he impresses blue or brown, perhaps next time he'll do the catching.
I think he did the catching the first time too. G'len laughed as he recalled it.

Sliding into a seat beside a woman and her teenage daughter, G'len smiled and nodded in greeting. "Good morning." he said brightly. It was always nice to make friends with the people you were sat beside at a hatching. Not that he would pass up making a friend for any reason, as the excitement on the sands heated up, it was good to have someone to talk to!

Go ahead and have the green gore and slice her however you prefer. I had imagined the shoulder/chest area but whatever you'd prefer. It is a deep wound though. < < The Fool would be sorry if it knew.

The Fool was indeed a tangle of limbs, tail, and wings. The poor thing was just freshly hatched, and still figuring out how to use all of these flailing limbs! It didn't help that Farensil had been tangled up with her when she initially stumbled, and now Amila was right there!

While in the egg the green baby had been contained to a small space, all the room and freedom to move surprised the hatchling. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to know what Amila was doing. Being helpful, yes. So it was, her large wing foreclaw reached out to grab at Amila. Finding it's mark true, the baby had no problem goring the girl, little realizing just how delicate humans were, and just how strong her own baby self actually was!

Putting all her weight on Amila, she did not expect the wingclaw to slice down and through as it attempted to find leverage and gather its footing. Ah-ha! That was what was needed.

Giving a happy and cheerful trumpet, the little green had no realization of the damage it just caused the girl, and bowled Amila over in its excitement. It radiated joy, oblivious to Amila's now bloody state, and with more confidence of its limbs, started bounding through the crowd.

It was free!

Freeeeee!

Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

The green was surprisingly quick on its feet, and while it seemed oblivious to where its wings were flailing around it, right now it was clear the baby just wanted to run. It would not hesitate to bowl any Candidates that were not quick enough to get out of its away over -- not out of spite, but it just didn't know any better.

It was free, and its siblings needed to be free, too, to enjoy such fun!

From her position on the sands, Daesilena thought the hum could not reach any higher than it was now. The vibrations rocked through her body and calmed her nervousness, it was something to focus on. Dae tried to focus on the eggs that she liked the most, so while the Emperor Egg had the most of her attention it was also hard not to keep an eye on the eggs that we shaking to come out, like the Wheel of Fortune. Yet try as it might, the egg did not crack open and so Dae waited patiently as one might for the Emperor to come out.

When the sound of the crack ripped through the humming, Daesilena almost wiped her head to see who had hatched first. From within the Fool egg and Green came out stumbling. Daesilena wasn’t surprised, she’d visited that egg and it just had been so excited! A girl reached out to help her and Daesilena winced for her. She would not break the line, which was the rule, she didn’t ant to risk the golden mother getting angry at any of them. The green was totally adorable though, she looked excited just as she had been in the shell.

Daesilena’s eyes returned to the Emperor egg but she also kept an eye on the Judgment egg. It seemed like the most likely to hatch next, Dae guessed another green would hatch from this one, the egg seemed similar in size to the Fool egg. When it hatched into a cute little blue, she was left pleasantly surprised. Now the next question would be, who was going to impress first? There were two babies on the sands now but they hadn’t gone to Their’s yet. Dae looked at the other candidates, who would it be?

A blue! A little blue! "Oh, he's so precious," Nadry cooed in soft appreciation, twining her fingers together. Bless it, dragon babies were so much cuter than human babies, officially...not that that was all that much of an accomplishment, since human babies were sort of inherently unsettling somehow. To her, anyway. Everyone else always seemed to think they were wonderful. "Poor thing, I hope he-"

Oh. Oh no. That clumsy green, and that girl- The color drained from Nadry's face and she gulped back a horrified sound. That was blood, oh, oh, she wanted to be sick-

All her attention snapped to the green and its path, as she was now intent on not being in it. So much for the cuteness of dragon babies.

(Edit: Oops, I was a little slow. This post should have happened before the mauling!)

In the stands, Emori sat beside Lucayr, all but scowling at the view below. That was the queen that had forced them to come here, and here they were, supporting her! Her blond friend seemed unperturbed, maybe even actually having fun, and she was irritated at him for it. She resisted the urge to yank him down by his tunic and slap him when he stood up to doff his hat and bow to a lovely woman who had taken the empty space next to him. She couldn’t see his face, but knew he was smiling and probably flashing a quick wink at the woman’s young daughter. She recognized the woman from the kitchen, and found herself admiring Alusia’s dress. Her own dress was blue with white sleeves, the blue made from a light material with a slight shimmer, and the sleeves sheer fabric. She envied the other woman’s shape that filled out her clothes far more nicely than Emori’s small frame ever could.

Oh, oh, Emori, look! She heard her dragon, Inannath, who was perched up above the weyrbowl to watch the hatch. She looked back at the eggs and saw a bumbling green dragonet. Her heart seemed to clench as she watched the dragonet clumsily and painfully meet a female candidate. Part of her wanted badly to see them Impress. The moment she Impressed her dear Inannath was the moment her world both ended and began.

--------

“Not at all, my dear woman,” Lucayr replied, returning to his seat beside Alusia. “I’m pleased to see you in attendance. Was it difficult to win the morning off?” He leaned forward to grin at Lusialu on the other side of her mother. “I half expected to see you on that sand today, too. It won’t be too much longer, I take it?”

The crowd became noisy, signaling something of significance down below. The first has arrived! brown Tikth announced, a note of triumph in his voice. Such a spirited little green!

Hope you don’t mind the familiarity, I believe Lucayr would know most of the staff pretty well after being at High Reaches for a whole turn!

Vitre

And there was one! A baby! Err, a hatchling! A dragonet, live on the sands! It was green and clumsy and so very small next to the huge parents. He was so awed that he almost missed Nebbi's pout, but then he turned to beam at her. His face was going to ache from all the smiling today induced, he was pretty sure. "Well, I'll believe you, even if no one else does!" He capped his declaration with a wink, all teasing with his best friend. "She's amazing though isn't she? I can't believe how little! And she'll grow up that big?" Well obviously not as big as the gold, but bigger by far. The ledges were just dripping in dragons now, and a number were of course greens. Even they seemed giant next to the galloping, gleeful baby.

Vitre had happened to look away at just the moment the green toppled into a girl, and when he turned back to the sands the eruption of the blue caught his eye, further distracting him. "Another! Blue this time. He seems a lot quieter than the green..." It'd just stayed where it hatched more or less. Was that normal? He glanced around at first his mother and then the rest of the crowd, but no one seemed terribly upset or worried. "Boy Nebbi, I'm glad I didn't bet any marks on this. I'd be doubly wrong now!"

V'mel

The arrival of his assistants was met with firm looks and a grunt from V'mel, though both Z'rik and Ashlyn would know by now that he wasn't angry with them. He was a firm task master, and decidedly military about things like timing, but luck had it that they weren't late. Not yet at least. "Most of the set up has been handled," He rumbled, jabbing a thumb back over his shoulder at the bustling drudges who'd turned the tables upright, lined up benches, and were still hauling in buckets and buckets and buckets of bloody raw meat. "Depending on how things go, we might have a few on our hands any moment, or we might get the pleasure of smelling this meat all go bad. If either of you catch a whiff of rot, you're to swap out the buckets. I'll have no sour guts on the first day." It was all the usual speech, the same demands he always made of hatchings. This was his...he'd lost track. Easily his 30th, if not 40th hatching as weyrlingmaster, and the man had a plan of action written in stone.

The arrival of the first hatchling brought the man to attention, and his eyes fixed on it as it all but bulldozed its way about. A girl'd been bloodied, and now the little thing was dashing about. "Always a few in every clutch," His gravel voice rolled, "Making a mess of the kids. Ours to clean up, if that one impresses. One of you make sure there's first aid kits about too. Healers'll get her first but if she does it'll still be on us to see she's calm enough to keep her partner."

Uridith/Lestenna

Uridith nearly trumpeted with joy as her first precious daughter Fool broke shell. Though she could sense the very low twist of disappointment from her dear rider (who had sorely wanted a bronze first, though such things won no one any real merit) she was too elated to care. Takarath, look! They come...! She is strong and fast, and perfect, like them all. A blue was next, and though she dared not go to urge him into the crowd, the gold's humming increased just a moment, as if to gently nuzzle him. She paid very little mind to that her first daughter of the day had left a girl raked and bleeding—Amila wasn't her daughter after all, and the candidates were mere afterthoughts beyond being there to pair with her hatchlings.

Caderyn nodded to Demanthra as she joined the three of them, and he was going to say something else when an egg suddenly cracked in half. His arm rose to shield his face from any shell shrapnel that may try and get in his eyes. At the sight of the green that came tumbling out he laughed and looked at Luiciand. "Seems your guess of a green first was right." He chuckled softly at this, getting comfortable between them.

Another egg hatched as well, this time a blue. Hie eyes wandered over the dragonet as it seemed confused and sat back on it's haunches. He almost felt a little sorry for it. Though it was strange, why hadn't any of them Impressed yet.

The eggs hatching drew Dorianus attention, but not as much as the sight of the green suddenly using her wing claw to tear into a girl. His eyes watched the girls face, ever present in his healer state of mind, even if he was here to Impress. He stayed in his spot, but his eye glanced over at the other healer he knew should be there, as well as the Candidatemaster and his assistants. Amilia seemed to be ok, for the moment, but he was ready to help and give aide if need be. He was a jounreyman healer, even if surgical was his specification.

Rennati had already been awake and beginning to eat breakfast when she heard the hums and then the voice telling her it was time. It was TIME!! The candidate rushed to put on her white robe and slid on the thin sandles as she hopped out of her room. She joined the mass of other candidates and followed to the sands. Once there, she stayed in the middle of everyone, as the time was now she started to second guess herself. Was this really the right thing for her? Had she made the right choice leaving her family? Would she even impress? Rennati shook her head quickly. They were supposed to think positive thoughts when around the eggs. Yes, she had made the right choice. Whether she impressed wasn't up to her so she should stop worrying about it.

She watched as the wheel if fortune wiggled but the fool bust from its shell in a tumbling mess. Ren thought she saw blood from one of the candidates in its way. What a pretty green fool was!

As if not to be outdone, Judgement hatched a handsome blue but seemed confused. Ren felt her heart lurch for it. Find yours little one, she wished for it.

---------------------

Takarath released the breath he had been holding in as the fool finally hatched and got things underway, though that ended up causing it's own issues. His head popped up despite Uridith’s calming touch. There was nothing he could do, he knew that, but he couldn't help but worry about the poor candidate. He was aware that she may have caused it by stepping in its path but still. The worried bronze settled against Uridith once more. He knew their clutch had strong personalities but he hoped not all 22 eggs would hatch in such a manner and hurt the helpless candidates.

V'Kenti smiled gently at the proud, if worried, parents before turning it to Lestenna who took his arm. He, of course, let her, and brought his other hand and gently patted her hand. For who's comfort he wasn't sure.

“Well, there we go. Mystery solved.” Luiciand said as the little green burst out. And winced as she cut open a candidate. Then a blue pooped out. Well now, it was started and maybe Caderyn would remain distracted from a certain egg and attentive to the rest. It would be so sad if he ignored his bonded for the red egg.

“Hey Cami. Demanthra. Hoping to see a gold?” Luiciand was trying to remain nonchalant and thought he was succeeding very well. Inside he was shaking with excitement, but that would not be dignified to show.

The color left Ichta's face as the eager green's claws, as if the little dragon was unknowing in the pain it was capable of inflicting, racked the flesh of the young woman who has stepped forth to steady it. They'd been warned to not get in any dragonet's way, but.....

She found herself standing just a bit closer to Goran and being very grateful that her adventure with that little one had been while it was still in an egg...

The sound of appreciation for another hatchling caused Ichta's eyes to scan the clutch. It only took a moment to find the newly born blue and she found herself nodding to it. There it was, see? You are a good little dragon. She told you.

Catching Dorianus's eyes from his place in the Stands, Dristan settled into H'sad's hold. This was always one of the most beautiful moments and also one of the most heart wrenching. He was waiting for the Impressions, but his attention was caught by the sight of the little Green as she mauled a Candidate in her effort to stand. Poor little thing. "Mm. She's a sweet baby, if a little clumsy." Hopefully the girl wasn't hurt too badly. If she was, surely his colleagues would be able to reach her in time to sort her out. After all, the dragonet was quite small... but then again, her claws were undoubtedly razor sharp at this age.

Dristan's little blue firelizard peered out from beneath his collar, giving a peep of concern as the Blue dragonet creeled anxiously. Was that baby having trouble finding his rider? "H'sad, look. Poor thing! Surely there is someone on the Sands for him?" No matter how many times he watched the dragons hatch this part always got to him. A furrow appeared between his thick brows, the line indicating his worry.

--

Oh no! Was that girl all right? Fehral put his hand instinctively between Chayrel and any possible danger, his strong arm surely not a sufficient shield to protect his friend from harm. "What is she doing? Does she need help?" Helpless to do much but watch from his vantage point, he tried to weigh whether Amila needed assistance. If he went to her he'd be leaving Chayrel high and dry, and he wasn't necessarily ready to do that just yet.

The little green Fool continued tearing around the Hatching Sands. It's eyes were vibrant and blue, and the joy that surrounded it was true. It bugled as it streaked past her golden mother and bronze father, but every step it took seemed to give it more confidence in it movements than the one before.

While some of its siblings might be shaky on their limbs, it was obvious The Fool was not one of them.

Ah, but overconfidence would be her doom, and as she crowed her joy at her parents, the sand gave way and the poor thing went into yet another tumble. Though she was surprised, and landed in a heap before The Wheel of Fortune, the green didn't seem hurt, and hardly missed a beat.

Her eyes whirled faster and she seemed to tilt her head, one way, than the other, as if thinking. Oh, oh, oh, she knew how to help!

With another happy bugle, this time crawled to her feet, and heaved with all her little baby might. The egg shifted... and began to roll, with its little sister happily pushing it (albeit slowly) along.

Look, she was helping! What fun, yes?

When the green began to roll the other egg around, Luiciand instinctively took a step back. He didn’t want to get caught in the path. Even though he wasn’t near the egg just yet. “Are they supposed to do that?” He asked a little worried for the dragon inside. It was going to be dizzy when it hatched now. And then it would maul candidates in its confusion. And then the candidates would bleed out and die on the healers. And then the healers would cry. Not worried at all was Luiciand.

She was about to say something to Ened when a green shattered from her shell, splashing her face with a spot of goo. Wiping it from her face, she watched the tangling of wing and claw. Stumbling back, she shifted away and watched. Then it was a Blue who broke free, but oh....The poor thing look so worried. Stepping forwards somewhat blindly, she watched the blurs of color worriedly before pulling the goggles up on her eyes. Ah, that was better...She could see now. How was the Wheel of Fortune doing? Oh no! It was rolling. She was quick to move to stand where the Egg might eventually roll if not sto, worry written on her small face.

Alumet

Her smile to her brother was dazzling. Oh yes, the two of them were a beautiful spectacle, and she knew it. Shifting to stand up, her eyes watched the dragonets that were tangling on the sands. A green and a Blue were now hatched, lovely little things. "Oh, that poor little girl. Look at her, all a tangle of limbs and wings. She felt bad, honestly, for her. ...And then for Amila when she was mauled by the claws. Ouch....Jesus that looked like it hurt. Flinching slightly, her hold on Cahlusi's waist tightened, as her gaze turned to the confused Blue. Oh, the poor thing was so lost, "The darling just wants to find his....too....Dear....goodness." She looked so worried.....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shiloh

The candidate on the side was curious, watching the dragonets as they burst forth. Discerning green eyes noted that the Fool was intent on tumbling about and have fun, and that blue was just wanting his to come right to him. Ah, they would come to find theirs in the fullness of time. Shifting on her feet, she stepped out of the way of tangling Green limbs as they came barreling towards her. "Careful now, tiny one. You'll hurt someone."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E'ion

Damn it! Seeing the little green mauling one of the Candidates, he was on his feet in a second, glancing at Gr'del, "...Faith will be kept, Faranth help me....But for now, let's help her." Amila wouldn't be too well off after the claws of a dragonet scored her deeply. That didn't end well, clearly....

As the egg's sister began to roll it, a loud crack split the air, and quite suddenly a little Green found herself instantly shell-less. With a startled peep, she shook goop from her hide, tangled up with her sister. ... Then, realizing that everyone here was there to see her, the baby gave a hum of pleasure, greeting both the Candidates and the audience that had arrived to observe. She stretched, and shook her wings out, and then began to untangle from the Fool. None of the bigger eggs had hatched, so this was her time to shine! The Wheel of Fortune gave a bugle of her own, and pranced out of the way of her sister. She peered around, wandering away from the scene of the carnage to try to find out what this was all about! The boys looked very nice... maybe she'd go visit them?

And with that, the Death Egg began to wobble. Its shell was not quite so thick as its sister's, but it was waiting for a very special friend, and wasn't ready to hatch quite yet. Not yet.
