11. Ouch, ouch, ouch, and more ouch. When it rains it pours, or so the saying goes, and while some of your wingmates might be in relatively quiet airspace, the wind keeps kicking Thread into yours! While you and your dragon flame and charr the ancient enemy, it unfortunately doesn’t leave you unscathed.

Your dragon’s wingsails are now sporting their first new burns and holes, and their shoulder now has a nasty gash that’s still weeping with ichor. Damage -4 HP

The wind was no friend to them, not today. Another clump was blown into their airspace, and while Pellereth flamed down some of it--not all of it had turned to ash. It leapt up from below, eating holes into his wingsails and slicing into his shoulder until the pair leapt between, reappearing a bit more shaken than before.

Of course, you also find yourself suddenly dangling in some mighty precarious positions as your dragon avoids getting smacked by a tangle of Thread. The straps you so valiantly worked on are the only thing keeping you from plummeting to your death. Let’s hope Thread doesn’t latch onto those thick leathers… and if they do, that your backup security straps work! Thankfully, as the fight continues, you focus on what’s important--flaming down Thread. If brown or bronze, you play a bit of hero. Knowing your dragon should be able to take a hit, you can Self-Sacrifice. Quote a wingmate and take their damage instead. While it may hurt you, it also means you were able to save the day.

Perhaps it was the fire that could fuel them though, and Theo found himself at last able to smother his fear enough to get to work. Wheeling, flaming, his own keen eyes on alert for danger. If his wingmates couldn't be counted on to protect his dragon, then... then he'd just have to do it! And if that meant saving a few of them in turn, well... well maybe Iweth was right, and they could be big heroes!

Tossing stone... was not what Theo was good at. A writer's arms were much less athletic than a miner's, even with six and more months' training and working out. The bags went sailing, but often too short or off-aim, leaving the bronzerider fumbling to make secondary tosses as quickly as he could (and even those were too close to off for comfort or anything close to pride.)

D'zrak and Slidrianth had never been more in sync before, and the man let out a whoop of exhilaration as the bronze spun wildly to avoid another bit of Thread. His straps were still holding him tightly, and Slidrianth let out a mighty burst of flame once more! The second time around, Theo knew to get just a bit closer. And honestly? It went about as pretty as he always imagined it would do in his stories. One, two, three, four out of five tosses hit the mark, and three of those found the hands of more important riders than himself. With a renewed sense of pride the young bronzerider dove back into formation, ready to finish out the grueling four-hour battle with his head high... hopefully.

Things start off slow, but you manage to catch a few strands of Thread. For the most part, you realize that things seem to be a mix of quiet followed by moments of stress. You catch a solid tangle, but another few strands fall through. You find it's tricky when there are entire groups falling overhead together, and you find yourself struggling to make the right choice on what to catch. In one instance, you almost singe a wingmate by forgetting your airspace. Rookie mistake! [If you roll this 3 times, you actually find yourself burning a wingmate. Quote a weyrling and have them take -5 HP from burn damage! The counter then resets.]

They were exhausted, they were frazzled, they were scored. A few more mistakes could be excused, at least if you asked them... but thankfully this time no one else was actually hurt by their little slip ups!

2-3. Things got heavy, fast! Thread seems to be everywhere, or at least, slipping through more than you thought it would. Is it just your location? Are other weyrlings this unlucky? Your dragon catches some, but not all, of the strands and what's worse, you wind up getting scored in the process! Thankfully, while the damage isn't major it's enough to send a shock of pain through the link. Threadscore: Take -1 Damage from Threadscore. Every time you roll this prompt, the damage goes up +1 as you and your dragon begin to exhaust themselves. Saves can nullify some or all of the damage, but the counter will continue to go up; Encouragement will reset the counter back to -1.

They'd been building up to this day for months. They were as prepared as they could be. The same could be said for most of them. But preparation could only go so far, and who knew what the day would bring? What losses might yet sting? Worrying over it was useless, however, and if either of them had any nerves and concerns, they were tucked well away. Now was not the time, not when they had a job to do, and distractions and mistakes could be fatal.

With everything checked and checked again (and just maybe one more time), Talis mounted up at V'res' order, gave Holleth a good solid thump on the neck, and it was time. And they certainly didn't waste any getting their blooding oit of the way - no sooner were they up than Thread was out to get them, and while Holleth was quick to twist away as best he could and flame it, a sliver blew back at them and wrapped around Talis' forearm.

Shardit! They were between quickly enough to stave off any serious damage, but it stung. Still, it was fine.

Finally.

It wasn't excitement that filled the two this day, but a dread sort pride. A grim grin. Alquemieth had thought of little else beyond taking flight and destroying the enemy for so long that, to Ar'din at least, it was almost funny to actually have the opportunity arrive with so little fanfare. Just some time to strap up and double check the firestone bag. In spite of the somber mood, they were in...well, not exactly high spirits, as neither dragon nor dragonrider were happy sorts, but there was an energy to them, a verve. Ar'din after all had spent turns as a pit fighter; all this tension was almost a return to form.

"See you later. Maybe. Gonna give me a good luck kiss just in case?" he asked Iathe at some point. He did not stick around too long for an answer.

Tsunake

The thrill of being in the thick of it was like a drug to him. Alquemieth cut through the air like a knife, and his rider resisted the urge to whoop. Danger and damage and death all around--ah, this was how you lived! Not even the singing the bronze suffered could bother them in that moment.

< On your left, > he barked, spying a clump flying at someone.

Quote:

It was their turn to make a run for firestone. After all his rants about flaming Thread, Ar'din was almost surprised to see how quick Alquemieth was shifting tasks. Almost. Every job was an important one to him, even less "actively heroic" things like this.

Neither of them was rattled by that first small 'score, and they set about business without delay. Holleth was built for agility, and it was fully on display as he dove and wheeled and flamed, cutting swaths through any Thread that came their way; though they were, perhaps, a bit too focused on burning the silver tangles to ash, as they neglected to avoid the ash itself. It was a mistake that singed, but would leave no lasting damage.

With everything else, though? They were on point and vigilant, and when one of their classmates was in danger, Holleth called out to warn them.

In spite of the little arguments that had been piling up, the bronzerider pair couldn't have felt more in sync during the flight. Flame there. Tilt just so there. Adjust the seat like this. The times their minds bled together no longer felt like his privacy was violated, but the opposite: like his awareness was widened exponentially.

18. You're doing great and feeling good! Though you wind up with a few small ashburns, and you're still feeling a little anxious, nothing has gone horribly wrong. When Thread gets close, you make your move and flame it away. When you're tapped to deliver firestone, you do so with no trouble. This isn't so bad... Not at all! You're feeling good, and that's what matters. You and your dragon surely are naturals, baby! Good job! You're certain the Weyrlingmaster's have noticed your natural skill.
