First off, he's got the idea not wholly correct. Sound doesn't just bounce, it can in fact, continue and travel through the earth. The fact his character keeps going beneath the ground wouldn't change much at all. In fact, he's moving into the sound, no? Atop of which, the insects are living creatures, the clap should greatly mess with them all the same.
I never saw the detail of "ground exploding" when it came to the technique where you move beneath the earth and rising again. Unnecessary detail tacked on. He's got way too much going on in the end. "I'm stabbing and I'm guarding, while attacking in two different directions!" That's like four different things in one movement. Way too much. At least by my standards.
