The first hour hadn't been so bad. It made them wary despite their version of good cheer, though not wary enough. It was as Ar'din was reaching for more stone that they heard Pellereth's bugle. He clutched on tight as Alquemieth suddenly twisted away with more grace than a bronze normally could, but even as he did they saw their fellow weyrling rush in to take the brunt of Threadfall anyway.

Are you joking? he thought to himself, his heart racing.

Alque growled, though whether at Thread or at his martyr of a cousin was hard to say. < Are you out of firestone, to be tossing yourself so needlessly? > he asked irritably. < Do not be so foolhardy next time, Pellereth. > They could both see now that the others had sustained Threadscore and ashburns, and it seemed to anger him even more. < Get back into formation and be mindful. I will be fine. >

17. You're blooded almost immediately by a large tangle of Thread. You suppose that's why it's called a First Blooding, after all. Damage Roll a D10 to see how much damage you take. The number represents the damage i.e a 4 would mean -4 HP.

So long as you're not knocked out by Thread, you're able to keep on fighting, though the pain is much stronger than you'd thought. Thankfully, your able to persevere and continue the fight. While a few more tangles get through, you don't take any further damage, and are able to help char Thread to harmless ash.

In being alerted to one potential disaster, however, the pair became entangled with a new one. Avoiding the clump at Pellereth's call had them appearing in what was supposed to be free airspace, only--

< Iweth, you wretched idiot! > Alquemieth hissed, narrowly avoiding collision but veering into a strand of Thread in doing so. There was a short pause as they jumped Between yet again to be rid of it before he continued, < Is your head still in the clouds even now? Get back into formation, fool! >

The jarring motion must have loosened his straps. Ar'din could immediately feel something wasn't right and growled a sigh as he kept an eye on it.

10. Someone call you butter, because you’re on a roll! Not only do you manage to flame down every target you go after, but formation changes are a breeze. Honestly, you’re feeling mighty proud of yourself and your dragon right now. Unfortunately, your luck doesn’t hold as the fighting carries on. One minute you were flying high, and the next minute something… something suddenly isn’t right. Oh no! You feel one of your straps begin to loosen. Did you not pull it tight enough? Was it a flaw in the design? Is it just bad luck!? While you’re okay for now, any jarring motions or wheels and dives make you feel just a little more closer to slipping off and out.

Hour 3, Roll 2:
Hour 3, Roll 3:
Hour 4, Roll 4:
Hour 4, Roll 5:
Hour 4, Roll 6:

Quote:
18. You're doing great and feeling good! Though you wind up with a few small ashburns, and you're still feeling a little anxious, nothing has gone horribly wrong. When Thread gets close, you make your move and flame it away. When you're tapped to deliver firestone, you do so with no trouble. This isn't so bad... Not at all! You're feeling good, and that's what matters. You and your dragon surely are naturals, baby! Good job! You're certain the Weyrlingmaster's have noticed your natural skill.

Skerath had nearly lashed out in protest when she'd been assigned to fly the second half of Fall, unable to stand the thought of having to wait. It was finally time to fight, and Iathe knew her increased moodiness had to coincide with preparation for her first Flight. She soothed her lifemate, but Iathe, too, was impatient to begin. This is what they were meant to do!

Ar'din received a withering look, and Iathe didn't hesitate to lightly smack his shoulder. "Come back safe. Or else." She threatened, but would watch as her fellow Weyrlings took off. Skerath rumbled mutionously behind her, but did nothing.

The hours inched past until it was finally time for A'zota to lead the second half. Having checked her straps over and over again, Iathe couldn't suppress a thrill as Skerath effortlessly took to the skies. The green was a natural fighter, flaming, twisting, and speeding through the air as though it was effortless. Hot clouds of ash occasionally buffeted them both, but it was nothing of real concern. Both dragon and rider felt good about this. This is where they were always meant to be.

Hour 1, Roll 3: 7, -3 HP
Hour 2, Roll 4:
Hour 2, Roll 5:
Hour 2, Roll 6:

Holleth was fast and agile, and quick to flame, but there was little he could do against the stronger gusts of wind. Physical power was not and never would be a trait of his, no matter how much he trained, and eventually the delicate blue lost his fight against the wind and was blown into a climp of Thread. He made the briefest, startled squeal of pain before blinking between with his.

Quote:
If you’re a green whose adult size is 24’ or larger, blue, or brown 33’ or under, you do find yourself struggling through the stronger gusts but are able to fight it. Unfortunately, as you fight against the wind, you either find Thread blowing right into you or strain your muscles against the fight. You’re able to evade most of the damage, but it’s still a struggle. Damage: -3 HP.

Determined to not get another fellow Weyrling hurt, Moirath and Veltanna were fully concentrated. And it was working. The thread was burning, the wind was cooperating. Yes, a little got through, but nothing compared to what Venandith had taken so no big! It was expected even. No worse than a little scorching.

The near misses seemed to put a fire underneath the young bronze. He flamed Thread with renewed fervor, darting away from potential danger as Ar'din watched the suspect strap and watched wind patterns. At one point, it was their turn to play heroes once again, although to Alque it was just them doing their job the right way. Unlike some pairs.

Quote:
7. If you’re a brown whose adult size is 34’ or larger or a bronze, you’ll fight against the wind but your strength and stamina allow you to pull through. You're able to play a bit of heroics and even manage to flame some Thread from one of your struggling fellows. Save Quote a wingmate and save them from damage!

No sooner were they back from between, Holleth's foreleg well-'scored - Fair is fair his only comment on that - than someone was shouting at them about how they should be doing their job. Coming on the heels of everything they'd done and that had happened so far, Talis didn't take it well, and made a rude gesture she hoped the brownrider got a good look at.

Hey, do me a favor? Have Faloth tell W'ill he can go ******** himself.

...perhaps it would be best if you told him yourself, later.

He sent her a soothing wave, but she'd be seething for the rest of their time in the air - even another tendril of Thread that slipped through their defenses and licked against her leg wasn't enough to take he mind off of it. How dare he!

Quote:
Things got heavy, fast! Thread seems to be everywhere, or at least, slipping through more than you thought it would. Is it just your location? Are other weyrlings this unlucky? Your dragon catches some, but not all, of the strands and what's worse, you wind up getting scored in the process! Thankfully, while the damage isn't major it's enough to send a shock of pain through the link. Threadscore: Take -1 Damage from Threadscore. Every time you roll this prompt, the damage goes up +1 as you and your dragon begin to exhaust themselves. Saves can nullify some or all of the damage, but the counter will continue to go up; Encouragement will reset the counter back to -1.

Oh yeah! They were doing some fine flying. Things were picking up in that they were settling down. Veltanna felt a lurch though and fell back in her seat quite hard. That wasn't right. She quickly reached down and tightened the loosening straps. You aren't supposed to fall. That is Thread's job.

Veltanna glared at nowhere. Now was not the time, Moirath. I didn't fall. It just loosened a little. All better now.

See how great they were doing! The very slight shaking off their confidence from earlier was all but forgotten and the pair were flying in high spirits for all that it was a dangerous activity. A little too high spirited and they ended up wheeling into a clump of thread that hurt mightily as Veltanna directed them between. That smarts!

In spite of a certain someone's belief that they weren't pulling their weight, they continued to do just that, flaming Thread left and right and pulling off all sorts of maneuvers to do it...but they were well into their second hour, and Holleth wasn't built for endurance. Between fighting Thread and fighting the wind, he'd been expending a lot of energy, and he was tired. So, so tired. It hit him all at once, dizzying him and Talis both, and it threw off their next jump between.

They were able to hop away from trouble, but unfortunately all they did was blink themselves right into more trouble that they didn't have time to avoid. Holleth bugled in pain and alarm and they jumped away again.

Quote:
Everything seemed to be going great. You manage to flame down quite a few clumps, and are even able to show off some impressive aeriel displays. Look at how amazing you are! Unfortunately, as a new Threadfighter, you’re finding it a lot more dizzying. Your jumps Between are sloppier than they usually are at drills. If you are a more confident rider, your sudden confusion winds up costing you. In your attempts to correct your earlier trouble, you overcompensate for your earlier mistakes and this time wind up jumping Between right into a clump of Thread. Damage Take -5 damage.

After the last encounter with Thread, the pair weren't as keen to be up there. Pain did not agree with either of them. Why must it hurt so? Whined Moirath to Veltanna, who's reply was most unhelpful. Because that is what pain does.

It was almost over though and soon they would be able to be tended. But Thread was still coming for them and as it wrapped around her tail, Moirath huffed and followed her rider's instructions to go between. Fine. I hope Thread feels pain as it burns to ash. Veltanna actually was startled by this. That was likely the meanest thing her dragon had ever said on purpose. And it was at Thread of all things.
