1. Oh-ho! You're in luck! You wind up finding some sea wherry and manage to hunt one down successfully! Thank Faranth--some real meat that isn't fish! Gain an extra +5 points.

Fishing wasn't bad, but Ilauria had come to enjoy the one day a week or so where she and Ovshth were let rove the beaches instead, hunting up the creatures of the shoreline rather than spending more hours hauling nets. Ovshth of course couldn't be bothered overmuch—he let his rider ride him as he lumbered along the beach, but that was the extent of his interest. She was sure that would change if REAL hunger struck the Weyr, but... until then, he was as lazy and detached as ever. Today his plodding steps stirred up a nest of sea wherries though, and while the brown stood in plain disinterest, Ilauria was far from willing to let them go. With a whoop and a leap, she flung herself off the dragon's back to run the largest and slowest of them down, tossing one of the smaller fishing nets over it to catch it. The net might get a little ripped up... but no one would mind in exchange for a nice plump wherry, surely!

This one is going to leave a scar. It will heal, but it's going to hurt! You'll still be able to fish, but you might want to wear some gloves.

A'yral couldn't say that fishing was much of his strong suit. He'd never tried it much, to be fair, but with the Weyr's current need--well, everybody was learning how to be an angler, whether they liked it or not. A'yral had barely managed to cast his line in the first place before something bit and pulled it far too taut far too quickly, sending the line and all its tension lashing back onto him; the sudden sting of a fresh wound combined with saltwater made him curse, and Venjeth immediately tried to get a better look at the injury as his rider scrambled to suppress the bleeding.
First cast of the day, and they'd already have to go to the healer's. Incredible.

1-10. You don't know exactly what happened, but somehow you have wound up tangled up in a fishing net, out in the middle of the ocean. You thrash around and try hard to free yourself, but all you wind up doing is breathing in the salt-water. Thankfully, you're fished out by your fellows, untangled from the net, and dragged back to shore. Outside of being a little traumatized, roll a D4 to see what the results of your poor fishing happened to be!
You are feeling miserable. Your nose stings, you're nauseous from drinking up so much salt water, and you're a bit cut up from the hooks. To make it worse, you've lost the net in its entirety, and now need to go to the infirmary to get the hooks removed and ensure they don't get infected. Blargh. What a day. [-15 points]

No, D'nov wasn't a fisherman. Did that give him any more insight as to how he'd managed to fall in so spectacularly, landing square in the middle of his own net? Honestly, no.
Fortunately enough, it didn't take long at all to reel him back in, now freshly studded with hooks and more than a bit soaked. Wrath keened her borderline-panic all the while, pacing back and forth along the beach until she could take him to the healers to get all his new piercings removed; the little White was beside herself, doing everything in her power to try and soothe her rider while his compatriots did their work.
D'nov knew full well he was going to be hearing about this from his son later, but for now, he simply allowed himself to grumble for a few moments. He'd earned that much, right?

You see the bobber go under, and pull up hard. Sure enough, there's a whopper at the end of the line. It's a fight, and you can tell you've snagged the largest packtail you've ever seen. Unfortunately you yank too hard and the line snaps. Not only is your pole now useless, but the big one gets away.
Worse, your fishing luck the rest of the sevenday seems to follow suit... You wind up with a whole lot of nothin'. -10 points

It certainly wasn't the first time in his life that he'd had to catch his own dinner, and Bukichi was sure it wouldn't be the last. He'd been fishing for a few hours now, quietly waiting for any kind of bite... and without warning, the bobber suddenly vanished underneath the water! He yanked hard to attempt to hook the fish, feeling his pulse pick up with excitement as the fish fought hard to escape. It felt like a monster, and he battled to reel it in--only for the line to unexpectedly snap. He caught himself before he fell, frowning at the ruined pole with irritation. Shards and shells.

21-30: Well that didn't go as planned. You thought you were pulling in a whopper, but instead all it turns out to be is an ancient, slimey, and very unsalvageable boot tangled up with some driftwood. There's nothing edible about this--not even any shelled seagrubs. To top it off, any fishing you do the rest of the day will either result in no bites or catches. -15 points

Nemeryn would admit to feeling a certain kind of satisfaction at what he thought might have been a particularly big fish on his line. That satisfaction was short lived. As he hauled up his catch, he could only grimace in disgust when he realized he'd only managed to catch a sodden, disgusting boot. A very old boot, by the look and smell of it. Bah.

Keerim had never seen a fish that big before. It made sense, of course, given the size of the ocean and all that, but she still couldn't believe this packtail's size--it rivaled Zeuliath when he was younger, as far as she could tell!
She'd thought she could manage this if she just timed it right--one good pull at the proper moment, and she'd land this fish and help Western. Unfortunately for Keerim, all she managed to do was snap the line rather suddenly, barely managing to avoid slicing herself up in the process.

Well. Time to fix this pole, then.

Your net was torn badly, and is now unusable. Any fish that might have been in the net are long gone, and you're not returning with a net loss of... a net lost! Not only that, but your nose burns, and you're not feeling too great thanks to your half-drown experience. Blegh. Better report the lost net. [-10 points]

Phryana could not abide feeling useless. Fishing was far from her area of expertise, but throwing a tantrum would make her useless and incompetent. Though life as a rider had built up her physical strength, she would not and never would be the strongest woman in the world. One moment, she'd been wrestling in an attempt to drag the net up from the depths, and the next? Well, the next, she was suddenly underwater, unable to tell up from down. Panic hit her like a strand of Thread, searing and deadly as she immediately began to flounder and sink.

She'd never learned to swim, not entirely, and with the net tangling around her limbs, there was a terrifying moment where she thought she would truly drown. Even underwater as she was, however, she could feel the force of Kleoth's alarmed bugle, felt the water rush as golden talons plunged into the ocean to seize both her and the net.

I have you, my love! In her haste, the queen accidentally tore a gaping rent in the carefully weaved fabric, all too focused on plucking her rider free. Kleoth's yellow eyes looked her over even as she gasped and retched, forcibly hacking the water out of her lungs.

"I'm alright." She croaked when she was able, blindly reaching out to stroke the claws that held her. "I promise, I'm alright."

The net, not so much.

Nothing but a flesh wound! It stings, but will heal within a sevenday.

"Son of a--"
Ohh, that's unpleasant.
"Yeah, no kidding." S'eran had clamped their free hand around their palm, doing what they could to staunch the bleeding as they backed off of the dock. Fujiath was quick to appear, even freshly-scored as she was; a dragon grimace was a little bit different, but S'eran could still very much tell when they were on the receiving end of one.

Your net was torn and will require some patching, using up some of the Weyr's supplies. Any fish that might have been caught in it are now free to swim another day, and you bring in nothing for the day. Outside of wounded pride, and wet clothes, you're fine to continue fishing another day. [-5 points]

In this particular moment, Lyfrocier was rather glad he was a competent swimmer.
It had been a matter of a single misstep--one foot just a bit too close to the edge while he'd thrown the net, and that had spelled his doom. Lyfrocier had gone tumbling down into the water with an unceremonious squawk, with Guarath screaming her distress all the while; fortunately enough, he hadn't gotten incredibly tangled, and had managed to avoid the majority of the hooks in the process. While she'd surely be fretting for the rest of the day, Lyf was simply glad it hadn't been worse.
