Copic markers are GOD if you have the money to pay for them, however even the money you spend on a small set of basics is well-spent because you can layer and do all sorts of cool things with those markers. I'm sure this has been stated before, but oh well. Also... http://www.howtodrawmanga.com/ if no one has pointed this site out yet! Oh! Also, for lineart I like to use the Sakura MICRON pens... the smaller the size the better, as well. Sometimes it takes a bit of work to get the new ones to work the right way though, just to warn you if you go out and buy these. They're good though, and you can buy them at any craft store, as far as I know. I do believe someond definately has alreay pointed out they like using the Sakura pens anyways..?

Not quite Copics are only god to those who know how to ultilize its power LOL I have had trouble with them... ended up using digital anyway. Laying only works if you have enough colors and frankly with 1 360 pack costing 1000 US i dont think i will be getting em anytime soon XD I agree with teh MICRON pens tho... those are nice piece of work. Personally I work with sketches only and then ink digitally with the pen tool in photoshop, I use 12 gradients of normal pencil and 0.9,0.7,0.5 and 0.3 mechanical pencils for outlines. Paper? normal photocopy paper is good so long as it doesnt rip after being erased~ Just wondering... how many of you ppl use a putty eraser? those kneading erasers? biggrin

LOL. xd
When I draw random doodles and stuff like that, I use magic rub eraser, they erase ENTIRELY, and papermate mechanical pencils. For outlining, sharpie. Coloring, crayola colored pencils.
But thats just me. I'll try to go look for some of the supplies you mentioned, next time I go to a store that sells art supplies.

If you use Prismacolor markers with the correct types of paper, it can actually work REALLY well. I use my Prismas with Borden&Riley #234 Paris Bleedproof paper for pens. It bleeds a little with the way I use them, but it's much more cost effective on the marker end, and it looks much nicer in the finished product. Here's a picture if anyone's interested I also use Prisma pencils, just not as much. Sakura Microns are fabulous for inking. For sure for sure.

I use Micron pens for inking, and gel pens or Prismacolor pencils for coloring.
I'm getting Copic markers for my birthday! I can't wait!

This thread has great suggestions. However, not everyone knows where to get all the supplies that are being discussed, maybe you could share a few stores (not websites) that can supply them?
It would be most helpful.

Mitarashi Sindo This thread has great suggestions. However, not everyone knows where to get all the supplies that are being discussed, maybe you could share a few stores (not websites) that can supply them? It would be most helpful. Well for starters (since many people have mentioned this art supply in particular) you can try a search here to try to find a supplier of Copic markers. It didn't turn up anything when I did a search with my zip code (I guess I do live in a small town), but it might work for you. *shrug* You can probably do similar searches on the internet to find stores near you that sell what you're looking for. Do a search for the desired product, then you can probably go to the maker's website where they can tell you where to find stores that sell it. That's what I did to find the above link with Copic. 3nodding And if all else fails, I know I always find fun things at Hobby Lobby. whee lol

Professional (commercial) manga paper isn't quite as expensive as you think it is. It's about 9 dollars are fourty sheets. 3nodding But I still won't buy it though sweatdrop I do my lineart on a basic sheet of computer paper and CG it on the computer.

Neisan-kun_Kamui Only so many people know wherer to get art supplies that are just awesome for american artist. Well, here is a list of some of the things that most people (especially beginners) need to know about: You can get all of these supplies from one type of brand: Deleter Which is the main brand that KNOCK (my manga-ka group) uses. You can see some of my random artwork using these supplies at: http://www.jonetsuitamashii.deviantart.comManga Paper: For Proffesional/Commercial Publishing use Size B4 For Doujinshi use A4 or B5 For Color Illustrations, Kent Paper seems to be the best Pen Nibs: For fine lines: Maru (great for small details such as hands and hair. I use this nib for most of my work, but they are much more expensive) For even lines: Saji (I use these for illustrations, but you can use these with pressure if you want uneven and smooth lines) For thick lines: G-Nib (great for action scenes and manga realism) Pencils: I use Zebra mechanical pencils, but for large drawings, use standard pencils (maybe F, HB, or 2B) Ink: I use Sumi (indian ink) But there is a large variety of inks. For color illustrations, make sure that you use water proof and non-water solluable (if that is spelled right xD) Screentone: There is a LARGE amount of different types of tone you can use. But if you want to save your money... use digital tones. I use Deleter ComicWorks. There are also many different brands, but that all comes from experience. Coloring: I just started using Prismacolor pencils, but pencils are harder to use than markers. But if you are going to use pencils, make sure that you add LIGHT layers, for that can be a hassle to erase. And blend every now and then. With markers, they are softer, and tend to be expensive, but DON'T get Prismacolor makers. You may be better off with Neopiko or Copic. I am trying to get some Neopiko markers, but McDonalds doesn't pay too much xD;!! Well, this is just BASIC, so I hope this helps the inspired artist in you! i use prismacolor markers a lot. THey arn't all that bad to use once you find out how to. You also need to make sure you get the right colors. And don't start out dark then go light. Color in light then go dark. Or just get photoshop! ^.^ And also you need prismacolor pencils and pastels to really make your manga look great. The pencils are great, but once again, you need to know how to use them.

A good eraser is kneaded. I don't know what brand. Kneaded erasers don't leave behind bits of rubber, get the job done, and are just more fun to mess with overall. And they last a long time. I had mine for a little over two years before it started leaving behind traces and smearing. Sorry if I stepped out of line or anything.
