"Ah..." Luka looked down into the depths of his tea, the aroma wafting waves of relaxing blue into the air around them. He felt ashamed of himself and absolutely humiliated. He should have known everything Burgh was telling him. He was sure he'd read something something similar in one of the many books he'd read.

"So, what you're saying is that Pokémon Battling is like writing a book? You need the right hook to entice the reader, then you must lure them along every inch of the way, always recognising what could go wrong and trying to avoid it and then at the end you pull out all your stops and finish things the way you want them to? If the hook and the plot are rubbish then the book is a failure. Am I making sense?"

"Correct, you must force your opponent where you want them, and defeat them instantly. Even if you can't, if you have chosen the right area, then your opponent won't be able to win," Burgh said.

"Now, student, did you have any questions?"

Luka smiled at having gotten at least something right. As Burgh asked him if he had any questions, Luka nodded.

"I was wondering if you could tell me where it would be best to train and how to go about training. I've got to give myself and Kai, my Tepig, more confidence in fighting. I've got to make Squirt, my Tirtouga, not get cocky and I have no idea where to start training Tayla, my Sewaddle. I want to at least be a competant trainer and I have literally no idea where to start. I think I know the basics of battling but I don't know any of the intricacies or what to look for....."

"Start with your prediction. You learn what to look for by losing, in this case, you lost because you messed up your first move. So you, as a trainer, must start there.

"Battling follows the same criteria, despite Pokemon. I can't tell you how to get closer to your Pokemon, only where you can start getting closer to yourself."

Luka thought about this for a moment. "So... what would be a good strategy for making a first move? I mean, I'm guessing that Squirt's Ancient Power into Rollout strategy might have worked had he waited for the first to connect, but, other then that, I'm not sure what strategies would have been good with Squirt."

"Kai might have been good for the environment as he could have heated the honey and made it stickier thereby making it easier to trap the enemies, right? But... Kai is afraid of battling... So... what if I pulled the first Pokémon switch out to a second more powerful Pokémon strategy? Would that give Kai enough experience to gain the levels to evolve or would that just work to my detriment?"

He paused for a moment, "Am I simultaneously over complicating and over simplifying this?"

"You're trying to make me answer a question. Pokemon's statistical numbers can be analyzed by today's technology, that gives the illusion of 'levels', but switching out only works in the manuals.

"You have to train your Pokemon like you would train yourself. To make Kai better at fire he would have to train his fire, not blast enemies with fire attacks.

"Simultaneously, you must train your strategy by battling. Trial and error. You have to determine the strategy based on where you are, in other words, adapt to each situation uniquely.

"As for what you could have done in the last match? Ancient Power to force Venipede to dodge, Roll Out into his landing location after he jumps, break out of it, using his body as a psuedo-ramp, and blasting him into the floor with another Ancient Power. Or, that's how I would've done it."

Luka nodded, "Ok. So... If I trained Kai with targets thereby improving his aim and consistency then would that be a step in the right direction? It would help to make him a better fighter and from there I could help him overcome his fear of fighting?"

"To improve my strategy would that just involve battling as many different people as I can and winging it?" He paused for a moment and then continued, "Winging it as in seeing how things unfold and how my mind perceives things."

He felt like he was beginning to see things a little more clearly. Also, Burgh wasn't as crazy as he appeared to be. He was actually quite a nice guy, nothing like the loony he'd had described to him.

Burgh laughed. "Yes, yes, now you're getting it, student. You have to throw yourself into the experience," his arms shot up, "let your muse of battle give you ideas while you look over every conceivable inconsistency in your strategy," he said.

Luka drank some of his tea, he'd barely touched it since the conversation had begun and it was delicious. His eyes shone as he heard the blend swirl its heat down his throat. "Mr Burgh, this is gorgeous. Do all Leavannies make such wonderful tea?" He bit his lip for a second, "I'm so sorry.... That was kind of random."
PostPosted: Tue Jun 28, 2011 12:55 pm

"This is a special brew from my personal Leavanny. She's such a doll," he said and he gestured toward the leaf-armed Leavanny who was standing in the doorway to a small kitchen with that omnipresent smile.

"I do so adore her tea. Now, student, is there anything else I can help you with? I would do love to return to my paintings."

Luka thought for a bit longer, "I think that's it, Mr Burgh. Thank you so much for your help. Hopefully I'll see you soon for a Gym Battle." He laughed before standing up and holding out his hand to Burgh. "Thank you so, so much."

"You're welcome," Burg said, though he did not take Luka's hands. Such dirty hands he could not touch, for he needed to get right back to his art, not wash his hands and then get back to it.

So instead he took a bow. "I have high hopes for your challenge."

Luka, feeling a little humiliated once again, bowed as well. "I'll see you then." He walked out through the hallway of honey and left the gym, emerging out into the vast expanse of the city. It was unbelievable. To have just exited a building that was so like a building of pure honey into the hustle and bustle of the city was almost like returning to Castelia from Pinwheel Forest. They were like two different worlds.

Either way, he had what he wanted and now it was time to set off on his journey. First, he would go home for dinner and then he would set off and become the best he could be.

Xavier jumped forward, itching to battle. Saden pushed him back, analyzing the situation. The three gym leaders were obviously of the grass, water, and fire types. Though Xavier and Santa would be great for taking out Cilian, Chili would easily dominte them. Flurry on the other hand, would be neutral for Cress and Chili, and though Cilian was super-effective, he could fight back with his own super effective moves. Saden smirked, "Sorry Xavier, but Flurry will take this one."

The spheal lazily rolled forward and yawned. He glared at his trainer for making him work. Oh how he hated physical effort. He hoped this battle would be over soon so he could take a nap. But I guess he could take a nap during the match so it didn't really matter much to the sleepy spheal.

The device before him automatically determined the Pokemon he would use, the level of power of the Pansear. After a second the ball came up and Chili caught it and released the fire monkey.

"Alright! Standard rules, no items and challengers go first! Let's get this started!"
