With a bit of flame, Pansear was out, escaping the torrent of water long before it flooded the hole.

It would explode from the other end, but Pansear was already gone from that location. The frozen terrain covered a large portion of the arena. A frozen wasteland and, if Pansear melted it, it would be a dampened arena.

"Work up," Chili said.

He didn't need to be offensive if the enemy couldn't even hit him. It didn't matter if he could heal over and over again, at this point Chili could take him out with one solid Solar Beam, likely one solid Grass Knot, in two more Work Ups? He'd likely defeat Spheal with a single solid normal effective blow. He just had to bide his own time, now.

"I don't feel it. The passion in your soul, between you and your Pokemon. He's lazy, and you just go with it, trusting his instinct. Such dissonance between trainer and Pokemon.." Chili sighed.

"My flames will burn right through you, my passion won't be washed away, no matter how big your waves are! That is the meaning of power!"
PostPosted: Thu Jun 30, 2011 3:31 pm

Saden smirked as the monkey used yet another work-up. However, with the ground frozen over, grass knot would not work. Solarbeam had to charge and spheal could easily dodge or cancel it. If another sunny day was issued the blizzard woulod melt and create a fearsome water attack. With the slick new terrain, the monkey who is used to grass may slip, while the arctic seel pokemon would excel. He took slight offense to the fire gym leader's comment, "Yeah he's lazy, but if he can easily fight off your monkey in his sleep, you're not in much of a position to talk, are you? Trust doesn't equal dissonance, sometimes pokemon can think of better ways to attack than we do, believe it or not."

Flurry's eyes opened once more, now full awake and focussed on the battle. He smiled as he now had the home field advantage of the icy terrain.

Saden called out, "Surf, straight to pansear!" He smirked, knowing that with a pokemon unadjusted to slick terrain, they are bound to lose their balance. He had seen it happen many times, though the pansear may have had experience with this before so only time would tell.

Flurry rode the wave, seemingly going straight for the pansage like his trainer had said. However, he quickly dived into the hole the pansear had dug and popped out on the other side, behind the pansear. He quickly rode the wave above the pansear, while the one from before he dived was collapsing as well, surrounding the pansear from both sides with the waves.

"You've missed the meaning of being a trainer. Hidden Power."

Two attacks, two fronts, with a new terrain! Fire alighted on Pansear's hands while Saden spoke, melting the ice only at his feet and letting him rest comfortably with his balance. He positioned himself as the waves came, the nature of waves were giant spiraling walls. In short, they weren't bursts of water, in nature alone, their weakest point was the wall below the collapsing wave.

In other words, Pansear would aim there. Jogger stance to full sprint, he launched himself, his foot coming down hard upon the ice to crack it under his foot as he launched himself underneath the wave's spiraling power, and through the sheet.

As this happened two balls formed in each hand and crackled with power. He would pass through and release them, the crackling energy moving as the waves of Spheal and the first attacked collided where they would have crushed Flurry.

With the angle, his back, and the wave, were blind to Saden(covered by the other wave or Spheal), leaving the only hint(the crackling energy) lost on a visual level to Saden.

And leaving Spheal to most likely endure the Hidden Power: Electric.

"There was a reason I chose this Pansear. We teach our Pokemon, so that we can lead them in combat. A Pokemon who fights by himself is no longer fighting with his master. Your Spheal, in your care, is alone. Defeating him without you calling the shots is just like beating a wild Pokemon."

Chili smiled. If Hidden Power, backed by four Work Ups hit, this match was over, rest or no rest, or at least without some sort of will power behind Spheal that extended beyond 'I want to rest', he'd need bigger motivation to overcome Chili.

"That is the truth behind your soul's waning flame."

Henrietta had tripped and fallen again. Eunmi stood over her and looked down at the girl, who was now likely covered in dirt. She probably would have been annoyed that Henrietta was dirtying her Monochrome Mercy shirt, but since the girl was so worried about her Litwick, Eunmi really couldn't be mad at her.

"We'll find a way out first and then get Melty. We can't do anything otherwise," Eunmi said and helped the girl to her feet. "I think maybe I should lead the way...
You're kind of a walking hazard sign."
PostPosted: Thu Jun 30, 2011 4:25 pm

Henrietta didn't catch that last part, probably to the luck of her self esteem. Up on her feet again she was more than willing to let Eunmi lead. She'd stick close by as Darumi hurried back to see what was taking them so ling.

[Comeon, letsgogogogogogogo, hurryupguys!] he said impatiently, not that the trainers could understand.

Henrietta looked down at him and then at Eunmi. It was dark save for his flaming eyebrows so she made sure to stay close, though not too close, a foot or two away really, hands rested at her breast, a look of worry on her face.

"I-i'm s-sorry t-to get you into th-this," she said.

"Don't apologize," Eunmi waved her hand. "It's not your fault a tree came crashing down on you."

Truth be told, Eunmi was still kind of wondering how it all happened, but it didn't quite matter right now. She hugged Dali and smiled.

"At least if we were in any serious danger, we have D-Vee to rely on," she said, excited to know that he was stronger than he looked.

"Smeargle smear smear," he grumbled.

"I bet if I bribed him with sweets, he'd be more cooperative," Eunmi said to Henrietta.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 30, 2011 4:37 pm

"M-maybe, hum," Henrietta pondered it. D-Vee was fast and powerful with some moves that were at least meant for taking down fire types. Had it not been for some nice saves and good calls, Melty wouldn't have lasted even the first turn. She'd applaud herself as a trainer if she didn't feel as if someone else could have done better. Like overcoming overwhelming odds was supposed to be the norm.

"I-i'm s-sure he won't l-let anything bad happen to us," Henrietta said, meaningless words, but she just didn't want to be lost in the silence. Plus, her voice echoed in the underground facility.

Darumi shot ahead again, to the end of the hall and peaked down the other end before waving them over to hurry and proceeding to run around in circles.

"S-so..." Henrietta said, but she had nothing.

"Oh yeah." Eunmi knelt down and looked D-Vee in the eye.

"You should mark where we've been so we don't get lost."

"Smeaaar," the Pokemon replied, looking away and crossing his arms.

"I'll give you-" Eunmi rustled through her bag and eventually retrieved a foil and paper wrapped rectangle. "-chocolate?"

"Smear!" D-Vee made a greedy snatch at the bar, but Eunmi quickly pulled it out of his reach.

"Half now, half later, deal?" The teenager stood up as she tossed one half into D-Vee's open palms. She looked down the hall at the Darumaka. "We're coming, calm down. It's not like anything is chasing us."
PostPosted: Thu Jun 30, 2011 4:58 pm

But, what if something WAS chasing them? Henrietta slowly turned her head to look back but she could only see darkness, barely illuminated by the distant flames. Objects in the previous room swaying by trick of the eye and trick of the mind and Henrietta stepped closer to Eunmi, stepping into that personal bubble point.

"H-he s-sure l-likes s-sweets," Henrietta said to lighten her own mood.

As Flurry crashed down he noticed the crackling energy of the electric attack. He quickly dived from his wave perch into the hole the pansear had dug before. The electricity would be grounded and proven ineffective. Flurry smirked as the evasion battle continued, between the two pokemon the majority of the attacks had missed. Though the spheal hadn't hit his target yet, he knew he could if he tried hard enough. He heard the gym leader criticize Saden about being a bad trainer, though his trainer had alwas tried his hardest to train him. The spheal just wouldn't work for any longer than a half hour without taking a nap. Now was his chance, he had to prove Chili wrong. This wasn't just about sleep anymore, it was personal.

Saden held in laughter at the gym leader's comment. All this over letting his pokemon make a couple decisions for himself? Once the attacks subsided, Flurry was nowhere to be found. A smirk came across the trainer's face as his pokemon dodge the attack, "And that is a perfect example of why you should let your pokemon think for himself sometimes. If you give every command, the pokemon will become too reliant on you to survive. On the other hand, if you don't give any commands or training, the pokemon is just like a wild one. To be a good trainer, you need a mix of the two so the pokemon can think fast when you can't see, like Flurry just did now. You call yourself the strongest gym leader here, but you can't even see that you need to let your pokemon think for itself sometimes. Flurry, use surf!"

Flurry nodded, not that they would see it since he was underground. He quickly rode a wave out of the hole, creating a large tower of water. He quickly froze it with a blizzard attack, creating a massive pillar of ice. Then he launched another surf attack into the pillar, collapsing it in Pansear's direction. He continued to ride the wave over the pillar, extending over both sides. If the pansear dodged the falling pillar, he would be hit by the falling wave and vice-versa. The spheal smirked, determination in his eyes. He was ready to shift the tide of this battle, before it was too late.

It was over. The point in which Pansear transcended type advantages. "Work Up."

The fifth one put Pansear's power almost four times what it was before. At this level of power water wouldn't effect his flames. Not without a lot of power. In short, Spheal could no longer rely on his water extinguishing Pansear's flame.

"Flame Burst."

The wide flames came, melting the ice and boiling it to steam before it ever reached the floor. The fire continued upward, into the wave of surf and the two attacks would explode into steam on the Spheal, assuming it didn't dodge.

Of course, Flame Burst was wide, so dodging side to side would be ineffective.

And then, all that left was Spheal in a cloud of steam, its bulk visible to Chili who said, "Hidden Power on sight."

Which meant that Pansear would be releasing his Hidden Power attack at the falling Spheal as soon as he was visible outside of the steam cloud.

"You don't get it," Chili said. Of course he wouldn't. "Trainers are meant to take everything in, observe everything and cover blind spots. Of course any Pokemon learns from what their trainers teach, but this is a Pokemon battle, it's meant for us trainers to show off, not our Pokemon."

"Yeah, I bet his previous owner spoiled him rotten," Eunmi replied. "He doesn't seem to lik-

"Stop," Eunmi said, stretching her arm out to sheild Henrietta. The hallway they had turned down seemed different. The whole place was creepy, no doubt about that, especially under the flickering light source of Darumaka's flames, but the hallway seemed eerie. Like the air was thicker and darker...

At the opposite end of the hall, pair of eyes glowed in the darkness, and a thick purplish fog rolled from around the creature.

"W-what is that-"

A wave of purple rings abruptly shot at them, a Psybeam.

Darumi heroically jumped out of the way of the psybeam and when he recovered he looked at its next target.

Eunmi, and behind her Henrietta.

"W-watch out!" Henrietta called and she, too, would have dived to the side but there was a wall at either side to run into if she did that, so she, instead, made her push Eunmi down to take the hit herself, in a bold moment of protectioness.

Robert Fratley
Striaton City

After a long journey from the docks in Kanako Town, through the busy streets of Accumula Town, and then through the forests of Route 2, Robert set foot in Striaton City. He was told that this would be the place for him to start his gym challenge. The Pokemon he had encountered on the way were unlike anything he had ever seen before.

However, he still couldn't get the rumors out of his head. He had overheard people debating over Pokemon liberation. While Pokemon were certainly capable of living independent of humans, the two races complimented each other, and each helped the other. The bonds between good trainers and their Pokemon were like the bonds of family. While Pokemon battling could certainly seem like abuse through the eyes of some, it was through battling that bonds become forged and friendships made.

Walking beside of him was his Lucario, Freya. She and Robert's Combusken Garnet were Robert's very first Pokemon. While Garnet didn't mind the Pokeball, Freya preferred to remain outside of it and at Robert's side. She didn't mind the Pokeball, so much as she merely wanted to be outside of it standing next to Robert.

Robert followed the map on the Pokedex until he came to the front steps of the gym. Robert took out a Luxury Ball and held it up, the button facing Freya. "I need you to return for now. No sneak previews for the gym leader." Robert spoke. Freya gave a nod and allowed herself to be sucked into the luxury ball.

From the sign on the door, it seemed as though there was already a gym battle underway. Robert would have to wait his turn, it seemed. He went over in his mind how to best prepare for this gym, though he really knew nothing about it. He would need to approach this with an open mind and his usual calm, rational mentality. He knew he could count on Freya and Garnet to follow his every command, but his most recent capture, an abandoned Kirlia he named Beatrix, still had trust issues, and a gym battle was no place to use a Pokemon who didn't have absolute trust in her trainer.
