Its not a happy scene, but its portrayed in such a unique way that I love the scene itself.
The musical is all based (loosely) on fact, so it would hardly be fair to rewrite history and say "lol, jk, so he's still alive." Its like the peak moment in a tragedy, the ending just wouldn't be the same without it.
