Hikari rushed towards the port eager to drop off her heavy ore. Upon arriving the drop-off point she would look for the one she was to give it to and hand it over, then head back to the gates. [Mission - A Miner's Duty 6/6 -Complete!]

Seiji entered the port authority with a heavy pack upon his shoulders. Settling it down at the designated drop off point he looked to the heads who had gathered and were orienting the arriving supply from the various villages. He gave a nod to them, left the pack with them, and made his way back towards the village gate to find his sister.

Hatsu passed by an area with a crowd growing but didn't want to get involved if she didn't have to. Arriving at the port she noticed Seiji just as he was leaving the area. "Ah! Big brother!" Hatsu ran up to Seiji and caught her breath before speaking again. "It seems Samuru left us here and went back to the village, and to make matters worse I think something's happened in town. Something bad." Hatsu turned towards the direction of the ruckus. "It might be a good idea to stay out of it."

"Then it's probably best if we board a ship and take it to dock back to Kumogakure, Hatsu. Come on, get your belongings up." Seiji stated as he patted his half-sister on the head and began to walk towards one of the ship's Captains, a man he had seen before several times in Kumo as his brother had often brought the man around on business.

"We need to acquire a ride back to Kumogakure, Captain. I am the younger brother of Myurai Hattori, one of your most prominent customers. If you do us this favour on your next pass out of port, I will see to it that we continue our family's excellence in trade negotiations with you, Captain." The young man spoke with the elegance of his brother forefront on his tongue.

The captain took a few minutes to weight the options, but upon looking at the facial structure of the boy and the cold eminence he seemed to exude the captain gave a nod and signalled to his men, as well as the children.

"Board up, we're leaving in ten minutes."

Getting us out of Takumi with a little more haste than I normally would in this situation because you have another character in the village.

As seiji reached for her head Hatsu flinched a little bit, but relaxed when he was much more gentle than she thought he would be. Commissioning a boat to get back to Kumo, they were to leave soon. "Sounds good." She kept it short and to the point, as she had something she needed to do anyways.

Hatsu put her bag down on the boat and took off her sleeve to inspect her shoulder. It was healing but the repeated use had inflamed it a bit. Conjuring up a Hatsuyuki cloud she surrounded her shoulder with it to help ease the pain.

Sailing towards Kumo the boat left the port. Keeping the Hatsuyuki on her shoulder Hatsu sat down at the front of the ship, near Seiji. Perhaps the ride was a little too relaxing, as Hatsu fell asleep against one of the side rails.

As his small trade fleet entered the familiar waters of Takumi Myuai's mood continued to improve. Last time he had been here he had accidentally deprived most of the city of its stock simply to help him create his trade empire, now he very likely was going to do so again. As his flagship reached the port and anchored in its berth he walked down the gangplank with a smile and headed directly for the harbormaster briefcase in hand. Handing over the list of things he wanted the harbormaster sighed,"You know Mr Hattori your really going to have to stop doing this, granted I have made an exceptional amount of money off of you, were going to need to expand the port at this rate." With a chuckle Myurai replied,"Let me know when you do and I will buy half those berths too. But down to business, I need ten fully equipped and armed frigates, one man-of-war, one Village Projectiles Pack, five Village Armor Pack's, and one Village Weapons Pack." Setting the large briefcase onto his desk he smiled,"Its all in there as always. The harbormaster sighed and nodded,"Fair enough I will have them loaded as soon as I can and transferred over to you."

Now that his ships were loaded and ready he boarded his flagship and ordered his fleet to head back home to Kumogakure. He had to admit as they were coming out of port that it was a beautiful sight. Twelve fully armed and battle ready frigates and one fully decked out man-of-war all bearing his flag. At this moment, Kumogakure did not have a navy, HE had a navy and one day it would see battle and bring glory to his name. Taking up his place aside the helmsman he enjoyed the smell of the sea air and the spray of the waves.

The group from Whitline Startup made their way to the River Port, their leader entering the main office and finding the owner still in a gloat after the recent purchases by another Shinobi. Approaching the man responsible for the Shipwright's office and began quick and subtle negotiations. Even with the recent purchases their was enough left to be requisitioned from the breaker's yard and the main flotilla to provide this company with what they needed. Giving his name as Nozarashi the man nodded and arranged for a purchase of several other materials to be shipped with these great ships.

He kept his calm and collected air throughout the entirety of the transaction and when it was concluded he settled himself and his others to the ships as they were being gathered up to the docks and settled in. One man would set upon each ship as they were being loaded.

The final resting price on materials was discussed and set at 99,000 Ryo, which was readily handed over to the shipwright. The men at hand then took to the sea as quickly as allowed, making their way in a direction arbitrary of their final destination so that they would not be followed. To maintain workability the members of the other ships began to use Bunshin to create additional workers, also Henge'd, to work additional positions upon the craft, as well as sending others to work on the ship of their leader.

Bast approached the port from the oft-neglected back side. The side streets and fields she had employed were entirely different beasts compared to the bright, well-kept main streets; it was out here that the depopulation of Takumi was most evident. Fields, once used to grow crops, lay unattended and overgrowing with weeds now that their farmers had fled. Though it was not what she had set out to investigate, the woman found herself inquiring about the fields when she arrived at the port proper, and soon found herself in a dialogue with a representative from the city hall about the state of the land's degradation. The representative seemed fairly certain that restoring the quality of the land would go a long way toward attracting more skilled farmers to the city, and in that vein gave the woman a contract to do just that.

That afternoon, the woman spent some time going over log books and manuals that covered the basics of farming, so that she knew what she was getting herself into. It was nowhere near as skilled a job as some of the others she used to taking on, but it was no less intense for it. For starters, she was going to have to dig an irrigation ditch to service the fields and likely clear away some of the trees to make room for larger farms. After returning the books to the representative, the ex-Kage returned to Mononoke for dinner, then moved her encampment to one of the empty fields, where she spent the rest of the night.

Day 1/6 for Tending the Land

Early in the morning, following a relatively restless night of sleep, Bast rose to the smell of cooking fish; Mononoke had managed to catch some by hand the previous night, it appeared, and was still covered in water from the endeavor. The woman ate the food begrudgingly, knowing that she needed the food for the day ahead, then rose to begin her hard day's work as a laborer. She fetched a pair of ill-fitting gloves and a bucket from one of the abandoned farmhouses nearby, then got down and started the arduous process of weeding the fields.

The sun was an unwelcome sight when it finally crept over the buildings. Its harsh rays only served to agitate an already sweaty Bastet, and after a few hours she stopped to swear at it. Surely, she reasoned, this sun must be hotter than the one over Sunagakure; it seemed like her sweat was rolling off of her endlessly, something that never happened in the Wind Country. To prevent her clothes from soaking all the way through, she went into the abandoned farm house again and changed out into a pair of shirt and a tank top, handing her other clothes to Mononoke to be washed. The work was slow going, but by lunchtime she had finished half of one of the fields. Small though the field was, such an accomplishment made the woman feel good, and it kept her mind off of her frugal fish lunch.

The afternoon was slated to be much more grueling than the morning, but the woman was actually looking forward to it. A lot of it would be tearing up trees to expand the range of the arable land, but she would also have to go and start surveying the other nearby fields to see how much work it would take to reclaim them. The contract she had received from the city had been to renew exactly three of these fields to test whether farmers would, in fact, return.

Trees fell one after the other to Bast's Ayametori. Felling them was, in fact, the easiest part of the job, she found; getting the stumps up was worse, and transporting the trunks was a pain that made her wish she had brought the Princess instead of Mononoke. She resisted the temptation to summon another golem, though, figuring this was the most beneficial way for her to learn the tricks of the trade.

As it turned out, using Doton Ninjutsu made getting the tree stumps out of the ground rather easy. Raising the stumps and then pulling them out of the ground with brute strength was exhausting, but effective, and left behind a nice spot of loose dirt that could be tilled later. The only things left behind after this were a few shrubs, which came up rather easily. At that point it was about time, she figured, to strip the felled trees of their branches. Using a fairly simple setup where she drove a stake into the ground at one end of the trees, attached a wire to it, and wove the wire through the branches, Bast was able to clear off almost all of the branches in one go with Ayametori. To get the rest, she simply rotated the tree trunks and repeated the process.

After moving the tree trunks into a pile and the stumps into a separate one, the woman strolled back to her camp and plopped down in the soft, dry dirt for a rest. After a while, she sat up and grabbed one of the water jugs she'd used on her trip out of the Sand. She had done an abysmal job of keeping hydrated during the day, and she was definitely feeling the effects. As she filled her jug at the nearest shop that would let her do so, she mentally mapped out the fields and the path the irrigation canal would have to take to reach the fields. She would have to file the paperwork for the canal with the city, she realized, and also hand in reports of her daily progress. That meant she needed to compile logs of her work, so she returned to camp and summoned a ream of paper from her home, using one of the many such reams she kept on hand in case she needed to have work done on the estate or write receipts for orders from her smithy. Employing a table hastily made from a stump using Ayametori--just how useful that technique was, she could not fathom--she compiled a short, but relatively detailed report of her work day:

"Name: Miyamoto Bastet.
Report of: Work completed.
Details: Rose for work at around five this morning, ate breakfast, began weeding at quarter 'til six. Weeded half of one of the abandoned fields near the river port. Broke for lunch at around noon; resumed work at half-past. Felled trees in the afternoon and removed stumps to expand arable land. Plot one increased roughly five meters in length, with nine total trees felled.
Plans for tomorrow: Finish weeding plot one; inspect existing greenhouses on plot one for damage.

Any payment from the city for services rendered may be delivered to the campsite adjacent to the plots of land indicated herein.
"

With that finished, Bast folded up the note and had a clone deliver it to city hall. She quickly finished off her jug of water and went for a second, then sat and did cool-down exercises until dinner. She gulped down her third meal of fish for the day much too quickly and turned in just as the sun was dipping low on the horizon, leaving Mononoke to guard the camp as usual.

Waking up the following day would prove to be a grand task, and with fatigue dogging Bast the entire time spent awake, she would be sure to turn in early. Her time spent in and out of Takumi would also be quite taxing on her psyche, as a general feeling of too many people around at all times plagued the ex-Kage. Even Mononoke looked to be strangely appetizing, but the temporary thoughts were most fleeting, if yet odd. Perhaps the Miyamoto had spent enough time at Takumi to finally succumb to some type of mild food poisoning, or contract the early symptoms of a flu.

Deep within her shadow, a subtle, minor splitting was occurring as an entity began to awaken.

Day 5/6 for Tending the Land

The next day was miserable, both inside and out. Bast awoke in the morning feeling worse than she had the entire time since she had left the Sand. Every weed she pulled from the ground felt like it was tethered to the earth by a thick chain. It would normally have been a small task for her to shrug off such sluggishness, but there was something holding her back this time. It was like she was reaching for the curtains so that she could pull them back and let the light in, but they always dangled just outside her reach, no matter how far she stretched. So she toiled, pulling weeds from the ground, alone for the most part. At one point, someone came to drop off the fertilizer that served as her reward for her meticulous clerical work, and that interaction proved almost physically painful for her. In fact, as time wore on, it seemed more and more like the city was oppressing her. The physical presence of the people around her was enough to induce a slight headache.

"You've got quite the arm," a man called over to her that afternoon, startling her as she dragged a tree trunk over to the pile already in progress. His voice was androgynous, but his build suggested he was male, and so did his name: "You can call me Kazunori, lady, but what's your designation?"

After the stifling her initial surprise and unexplained antipathy toward the interaction, Bast whipped around and looked at the man through the dark lenses of her goggles. He was crouched on a stone slab some twenty feet away, looking at her with a curious look in his eyes. He appeared to be no more than twenty-five years of age, and despite how clean his business suit was, his skin looked like it was caked with so much dirt that she initially mistook him for a farmer.

"C.M.W.," she responded guardedly, giving the initials of her alter ego instead of her own name. "Short for Community-Minded Woman. Nice to meet you."

The man whistled in surprise, but remained quiet while she cleared away more trees. She thought she heard him gasp whenever she ripped a stump out of the ground, but he never showed even the slightest trace of surprise when she looked. It was only when she had sheared off the branches from the new trees and sat down for dinner that he addressed her again.

"You got her fish again?" Kazunori asked Mononoke as the food was served. Mononoke, naturally, did not respond. Instead, between bites of fish and filling out her notice of the day's work for the city, Bast took up the role:

"It's free and a relatively low-risk way to secure food," she said dismissively. "If you've lived off of the land, you know how important that can be."

"What about her, though? She isn't eating."

"She's a special case; don't worry about her. You, on the other hand... Can I help you, sir?"

"I'll tell you tomorrow, bright and early. Sleep tight, Community-Minded Woman. Don't get too sick of the fish."

He left soon thereafter, leaving Bast in the relative silence she so craved. As the cicadas began chirping, she sealed her daily report and sent it in to the city before turning in.

Day 6/6 for Tending the Land - Complete!

"So, what, you're working for the city or something?" Kazunori asked, sitting under an umbrella in the shade of a nearby building. At his side was a cask of drinking water that he and a few others had hauled in earlier that morning while Bast was eating breakfast. The woman hadn't asked yet, but it was pretty apparent the cask was meant for her.

"Yes," she responded frankly while plunging her hands into the dirt to pull up a dug-in weed. "Instability in Takumi is a problem for the nations that rely on it, so I'm here to help stabilize things. Since I can already tell you're about to ask, it's less a mission and more a self-appointed task."

"Hah! You've got some nerve, coming to a merchant city with those kinds of goals. I doubt you shinobi-types have even a tenth the economic know-how of the most amateur apprentice here."

The sun high in the sky, Bast put aside her gloves and walked over to her pesky guest. Her gut was telling her it was time for lunch now, and she trusted it; unlike the day before, she was actually feeling somewhat lively, the fog of lethargy having parted somewhat in her mind, so she could trust her hunger wasn't just a way to get out of work. She downed a large tankard's worth of water like it was nothing, gobbled up her fish lunch so quickly she could hardly taste it, and then went back to work.

She was getting awfully tired of felling trees, but she needed to clear land and gather materials for the greenhouses, and chopping down trees served both those purposes. She cleared another small swath of greenery in no time at all, yanked up the stumps, and got to work moving the tree trunks into the ever-growing pile. A quick count of her spoils showed that she had cleared just under 30 trees this way, a number in no way too small for her liking.

"I heard you were working at the tailor's up until recently," Kazunori opened, venturing over to the woman despite the roasting sun.

"What of it?" Bast responded. She had begun to loop her wire through the branches of the newly gathered trees.

"Well, I was kind of wondering whether you knew if money was made of paper or cloth. A buddy of mine thinks it's cloth, but that just sounds silly."

"The bills are made of cloth, the coins are made of gold." With a hand sign and a yank, the wire sheared through the branches, freeing the trunks.

"You know, I think you were right about the bills," Kazunori admitted after about an hour of silence. "It'd be too convenient if they were paper. They certainly did a good job of it, though, I've gotta say."

"Agreed, it's quite amazing. It makes it really easy to spot counterfeit bills, too." As she spoke, the woman jotted down the day's activities on a piece of thick stationery. When she looked up and saw the young man's confusion, she sighed and continued: "For starters, if you look closely at a bill and don't see the individual fibers that make it up, you know it's fake, probably paper. The dyes that bond to paper and cloth are different, too, so you can tell a fake if the colors smudge or if a bill's not quite the right hue. With coins, gold's a fairly soft metal and it doesn't tarnish easily, so a dirty or exceptionally hard coin is obviously a fake. If I had any counterfeit bills or coins, I'd show you. Most of it's easy enough to spot even for an untrained eye if you have the right tricks."

"Hold on, hold on," the young man said, reaching into his pocket for some change, which he then slapped down on the stump next to Bast's note. "Is any of this stuff bad?"

After a few quick tests--including rubbing a little bit of saliva into the corner of a few bills and digging her fingernails into a few coins--Bast handed him back a few good bills and a couple of smudged ones.

"Lazy counterfeiters use dyes that run with a bit of spit. Your coins all seemed to be good."

Kazunori lapsed into a contemplative silence, then pocketed his cash and excused himself. The rest of the evening passed uneventfully, though Mononoke did return with fertilizer following her trip to city hall to turn in the activity report. Bast turned in early, feeling the fatigue crushing down on her again.
