Richard Drage
Second Year - Ravenclaw
—¤÷(`[¤* *¤]´)÷¤—

Rick entered the class and settled down to listen to the lecture. When the professor asked about what people would choose when confronted with the Hallows, he almost agreed with the cloak. However, he stopped and thought about each. The wand he could care less about. The cloak, while useful, he could almost mimic just by existing. However, the one that he finally thought over was the stone. He thought about what he would use it for, and he almost shivered. "The stone. It would be nice to probably talk to people who you miss, at least." He didn't add that at least then he might be able to meet his mother, and have at least one parent that cared about him.

@>> Nell walked into the classroom nervously seeing as she was late for her lesson and that the professor was already speaking about the Deathly Hallows. She immediately took the empty seat next to Marina and began writing down notes over the lecture. She silently agreed with her friend about the hallows but was surprised to hear Damien also agree. Well, not surprised that he agreed more surprised that he voiced his approval but she smiled at the two of them finally getting along. Now if only Ada and Michelle could follow suit, but she figured they would at their own pace. Nell continued to ponder over the question in her mind but couldn't find a hallow she wanted. The cloak would be lovely but could a spell or potion be used? She didn't want the power that came with the wand, what could she do with it? And as for the resurrection stone...sometimes it was best to just let the dead have their rest. She had read the Beedle and the Bard when she was younger and had nightmares about that stone. Having someone you loved come back to visit from beyond the grave was all well and good but what if that wasn't what they wanted? And what if they never went back to the place they were already occupying? It was messing with the whole order of things! But she held her tongue and merely listened as the others spoke their opinions.<<@

Grayson Powell
History of Magic Professor
Former Ravenclaw

Now where did I put that wand?

Grayson strode into the classroom, and started placing a copy of a book on each table. Afterward, he walked over to the board and wrote the topic of the day down, then turned around and regarded the class as they walked in. This should be an interesting lesson, he thought.

Professor Powell
Beedle the Bard

"Today we're going to talk about Beedle the Bard, the author of The Deathly Hallows that we talked about last class. For those from Wizarding families, you may have heard his stories before, usually as children's tales. However, it would do to inform your classmates of the topic, since they may not know.

"Beedle the Bard was an author of wizarding fairytales in the fifteenth century. Beedle was born in Yorkshire, England. At some point in his life, he wrote The Tales of Beedle the Bard. The only known image of Beedle is a woodcut that shows him with a "luxuriant" beard. Taking his stories as an indicator of his opinions, he seems to have held Muggles in higher esteem than most of his contemporaries.

"If his stories accurately reflect his opinions, he rather liked Muggles, whom he regarded as ignorant rather than malevolent; he mistrusted Dark Magic, and he believed that the worst excesses of wizardkind sprang from the all-too-human traits of cruelty, apathy or arrogant misapplication of their own talents. The heroes and heroines who triumph in his stories are not those with the most powerful magic, but rather those who demonstrate the most kindness, common sense and ingenuity.

"There has been at least one attempt to make the original stories 'child friendly'. The Toadstool Tales were a series of adaptations of other works, written by Beatrix Bloxam. They contained soppy, "sanitized" versions of other works, including the The Tales of Beedle the Bard , which was Mrs. Bloxam's way of purifying them so as to preserve childrens' innocence. Beatrix Bloxam set out to write The Toadstool Tales because of the "unwholesome characters" and themes found in The Tales of Beedle the Bard that she believed were damaging to children. The Toadstool Tales were universally loathed by children, and were eventually banned, presumably by the Ministry of Magic because they had a tendency to induce uncontrollable retching in the children who read them, as well as an immediate demand to 'have the book taken from them and mashed into pulp'.

"The Tales of Beedle the Bard consist of at least the following tales: The Wizard and the Hopping Pot, The Fountain of Fair Fortune, The Warlock's Hairy Heart, Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump, and The Tale of the Three Brothers, which is also known as the Deathly Hallows.

"Now, to leave this class off on a bit of a light note, I have left on each desk a copy of the original tales. I would like for you to read through them and discuss why each tale is important, and what important morals you can find in them. I hate to stress this, but there should be no arguments, and any that start will be stopped immediately."

Marina was pleasantly surprised that they were covering Beedle the Bard. She had loved his stories growing; her parents had read them to her every night until she had decreed that she was too old to be read to at the age of seven. Her favorite had been the The Tale of the Three Brothers, of course. The Slytherin had to cover her mouth to stifle a snicker when the teacher mentioned The Toadstool Tales. She had heard of them before, but never knew they were intended to 'preserve children's innocence'. As if any halfway intelligent person would believe that load of rubbish. So much for the desired effect. Marina doubted uncontrollable retching was what Mrs. Bloxam had been hoping for. She had a copy of the tales, of course, but they were probably in the attic at her house with the rest of her old childhood things. It made her a little sad to think of them gathering dust up there. Over the summer she would have to find them, she decided. With those thoughts the redhead took a copy and returned to her seat, flipping to the first page to begin reading. It really would be hilarious if people started fighting over children's stories.

"Endurance is nobler than strength and has more patience than beauty."

Adalaide smiled as she listened intently to the lesson, already thumbing through the storybook on her desk. She loved these stories... although it was rather hard to pick a favorite. She supposed that The Three Brothers was the general favorite among her peers. It was her father's, after all, and the most well known. But she'd never liked it as much. It made her sad. Her father loved it because, like any Ravenclaw, he admired the youngest brother's genius in requesting the Invisibility Cloak, and outsmarting death. But to her, his wisdom simply put emphasis on the fates of his brothers. It was their own foolishness that had done it, but that didn't make it not sad. She sighed a little, and flipped the pages of the book. It opened to 'The Fountain of Fair Fortune.' She smiled. Of all the tales, she decided then, this one was her favorite. A lot of the others showcased the struggle against adversity, but this was the only one that really seemed to have a happy ending. The touch about the fountain not being magical in the end really did it for her. All those people who thought it had helped them had actually helped themselves. All they'd needed was a little push in the right direction. She could relate; after all, her magic had been horrible last year, but this year she was doing really well. Plus, the bit about the heartbroken witch and the muggle knight falling in love really got her; she supposed she was something of a romantic. She read the story through, not really needing to, already knowing it, and all the others, by heart, but loving to all the same. The only one she didn't care as much for was The Warlock's Hairy Heart. A lot of people thought of it as a scary story, but to her, it was simply sad. That a man could be driven to something so horrid by a fear of love, of all things... but then, that was her inner romantic talking again. She hummed softly to herself as she read.

Damien, for once, was actually learning new things this lesson. He'd known of the Tales of Beedle the Bard, of course, and had even heard them, but he was also aware that, in fact, the versions he'd been told as a child were different than the ones told to his classmates. He'd seen a copy of the book at Flourish and Blotts once as a child, and, upon showing it to his mother, had been scolded for requesting she purchase 'pro-muggle dribble' for him to read. When he'd arrived home with her, he'd asked his father about it. Wesley Edgeworth had told him that Beedle the Bard had been a pro-muggle activist, and his stories reflected that damnable attitude. As such, they had subsequently been altered to better suit the ideals of a proper pureblooded family and environment. Damien doubted if he'd read the same version as most of his classmates, with the possible exception of 'The Warlock's Hairy Heart,' which from what he had heard remained much the same in all tellings. In fact, it was touted by the Pureblood community as being the one sane thing Beedle had written, since the main character's search for a proper wife had included the trait of 'magical,' implying that he was looking for someone pureblooded. The Tale of Three Brothers might also have survived relatively unscathed; he didn't think that it was very pro-muggle. But the others... he'd never even heard The Fountain of Fair Fortune. He opened his book to that one, and noticed that Adalaide Blythe was reading it as well, with a smile on her face. He supposed she must like that one very much; if it had been beyond repair in the eyes of a pureblood, it must be perfect for a halfblood. He wondered what all the fuss was about. Having never heard it, he had no clue what the problem was. As he began reading, his brow furrowed. No wonder his mother had never told him the story. Still, it seemed like a rather good story for a child...

His mind still whirled; caught up in the dust storm, the rain of ash still falling from the skies of a world under fire, greedy flames groped, the tragedy of the Deathly Hallows and its intent still firm upon his mind. Had he been first to speak, he realized in hindsight, he might have voiced his opinion—but as it were, he did not, and he would not subject himself to isolation, even with such simple ideals. It seemed most everyone had believed in playing it safe, and aiming for the cloak and its simplistic means. He, however, would have chosen the wand in a heartbeat—but not to use it, no, to study it.

This was probably the most focus he had ever carried along with him in History of Magic class, regardless whether or not if it was too this lesson (which, it was not.) While the rest of the class toiled on about the works of Beedle the Bard, and other childrens fairytales, he envisioned himself with the Elder Wand, and all that he might do with it. Glancing over his shoulder to see where Damien’s book was opened too, he flipped to the right page, if in the least, to look like he was paying attention.
”Say, mate, care to join me for lunch after this?” He proposed with the tilt of his head.

Tobyn smiled fondly as he listened to the professor talk about the lesson. He had always enjoyed having his parents read these to him when he was younger. He leafed through the pages and skimmed over the words he'd been familiar with since he was a child. He was rather fond of The Fountain of Fair Fortune. The knight was his favorite. He continued to leaf through the book, laughing to himself quietly, knowing the only book he'd ever willingly read was a children's one.

Damien glanced up from his reading to Dominic. He noticed that his friend had opened the book to the same page as he and smirked. Dom didn't much care for this lesson, it seemed. He doubted if his fellow snake was reading, or even had looked at the book other than to turn to that page. Not that he blamed him; they were children's stories. The only reason Damien was interested was because... well, because he wasn't sure of much of anything anymore, and he thought that maybe reading the tales in their original form would mean something. So far, reading the Fountain story, he was wholly unsurprised that he'd never heard it before, in any form. He had no idea how it could possibly have been changed to be appropriate for a family preoccupied with blood purity. He nodded his head. "Sure, sounds good," he replied, turning to the next story. The Warlock's Hairy Heart. No need to read that one. From what he'd heard, it had remained entirely unchanged by the blood purists. So he skipped it, thinking. He found it odd that so many parents thought that gruesome story was more appropriate for their children than the Fountain, in spite of the pro-muggle message. The Warlock's story was terrifying. He'd had nightmares the first time he'd heard it, horrible dreams of his own heart leaping from his chest and beating, slowly shriveling and growing hair. That had been... right around the time he'd stopped being friends with Adalaide, he thought. That bothered him. In light of his current doubts, he couldn't help but wonder if the two events were related.

Janelle groaned inwardly when the professor said they were going to be reading more children's stories. This was supposed to be a history class, right? Not that she really minded not having to do stuff, but she'd never read a children's even when she was a child and didn't see what she could learn from one now. Sure beats taking notes though, She thought as she leafed through the pages, pretending to read. As she thumbed through the book one story caught her eye. The Warlocks Hairy Heart. Starting to read it she was mesmerized by how dark it was for a children's story. She let out a small laugh at the end. Was that really it? How gruesome for a kid's story. She loved it. She turned back to the beginning to read it again. She wondered if other wizard stories were as dark as this. Judging by their titles and what she saw when flipping through before, she didn't think so.

Now where did I put that wand?

Grayson stopped reading his book as more and more of the students for the class walked in. He looked over each of them, wondering not for the first time if any of them would be interested in what he'd teach. He remembered Binns and the way he put most students to sleep, and decided that he would at least try to not put any of the students to sleep. He took his feet off the desk and stood, hoping that by doing so, he would at least give off a presence instead of looking bored.

"Hello class, and welcome back to History of Magic. I know that perhaps most of you don't remember much from the last year, so I figured that for this first class, we would review what you learned last year, just to brush up before we jump headlong into this year's curriculum." He looked about, making sure that everyone was paying attention, before continuing. "Can anyone here tell me precisely what you have learned last year? You don't have to give me the full information, as I would prefer to see if everyone payed attention in class. One subject per student, if you would."

Chloe walked into her last class of the week and took a seat at the front like always. "Morning Professor." she said before he started into the class lesson. It turned out to be review which was easy for Chloe because she pretty much read her notes and textbooks all summer. Raising her hand to answer she smiled before speaking. "I remember we talked about the history of Hogwarts and we talked mainly about the chamber of secrets and how it was Salazar Slytherin who built and maybe he never left." Chloe said remembering that class well.
