Bit windy, ain't it, Ven? Zyamel thought as the dragon found himself fighting a particularly strong gust.

She felt the brown give a snort, even as he struggled against the winds. While he'd never admit it was a struggle, she could feel the strain against his wings. Nothing I can't handle. The dragon, thankfully, managed to fight through it.

[Will edit in a save if he manages to save a PC...otherwise he saved an NPC!]

Quote:

7. This is horrible. Thread is a lot more potent than you expected. While it started off relatively quiet, the wind gusts so high up are a lot stronger than you expected.

If you’re a brown whose adult size is 34’ or larger or a bronze, you’ll fight against the wind but your strength and stamina allow you to pull through. You're able to play a bit of heroics and even manage to flame some Thread from one of your struggling fellows. Save Quote a wingmate and save them from damage!

Hour 4 – 3:

Alegriath was so small. It had always been a fact, even while growing up over these many months. Arlie wondered if it was possible to get any smaller than her beautiful white, who had been cradled in her lap longer than most got a chance to, a crooning ball of music and life and love. Now here they were, with Alegriath carrying her now and nearly a whole head taller than her. She was almost an adult now.

And she didn't stand a chance against the winds.

If you’re a white or green whose adult size is smaller than 24’, you’ll find yourself struggling. You are blown right into a clump of thread. Damage: -5 HP.

He was just so tired, and it hurt so much.

His, too. Which was his pain, and which was Hers? He couldn't tell the difference, and neither could she.

They'd gone between to shed the tangle that had wrapped around them, only to reappear in another, and together it was all too much for the delicate yoing blue to withstand any more of. He gave a short, pained cry as he began to fall, reaching out blindly for those he held most dear - his rider and his mother - and then everything went dark.

Quote:
Everything seemed to be going great. You manage to flame down quite a few clumps, and are even able to show off some impressive aeriel displays. Look at how amazing you are! Unfortunately, as a new Threadfighter, you’re finding it a lot more dizzying. Your jumps Between are sloppier than they usually are at drills. If you are a more confident rider, your sudden confusion winds up costing you. In your attempts to correct your earlier trouble, you overcompensate for your earlier mistakes and this time wind up jumping Between right into a clump of Thread. Damage Take -5 damage.

Hour 4 – 3:

< I-I'm okay! > Alegriath panted, the cheer in her voice threading irregularly through her words. < Just...need some more stone if you please! >

Arlie tried not to shake from the pain as she grabbed one from the firestone bag and tossed it. Fear returned when she felt a new pain added to the mix in her mouth.

< Oh, sorry, sorry, ahhhhowwwwwww--! >

Quote:
19-20. It's a bit of a mixed bag here. To start, your dragon bit his or her tongue while you were feeding them stone and now there's just a constant residual ache in both your mouths. While you've managed to spit flame at the Enemy and char it into dust, you clearly need to work on your firestone toss because you wrenched an arm muscle during your last throw. Ow. To make matters worse, you wound up missing a formation change, and almost had a mid-air collision with a fellow weyrling. [If this is your 3rd time rolling, you take -4 HP from all the tongue-biting and arm wrenching, and quote a Weyrling to take -5HP from damage.]

The pride Zyamel felt for her brown was indescribable, and the brown couldn't help but be pleased by their progress. Not one, but two assists already? This was what the brown dragon had always said he wanted to do--to save his family, to protect his loved ones, to be the big damn hero he knew he would be. Not for glory or fame (though it was a nice thought) but so they wouldn't have to hurt or face fear.

Unfortunately, the glow was short lived. There was a sudden jolt of pain, and both rider and dragon knew they'd been hit. A single strand chewed through the tip of Ven's wingsail, but a quick hop between was all that was needed.

He was fine. They'd be fine. Nothing but a flesh wound, at any rate.

Quote:
Things got heavy, fast! Thread seems to be everywhere, or at least, slipping through more than you thought it would. Is it just your location? Are other weyrlings this unlucky? Your dragon catches some, but not all, of the strands and what's worse, you wind up getting scored in the process! Thankfully, while the damage isn't major it's enough to send a shock of pain through the link. Threadscore: Take -1 Damage from Threadscore. Every time you roll this prompt, the damage goes up +1 as you and your dragon begin to exhaust themselves. Saves can nullify some or all of the damage, but the counter will continue to go up; Encouragement will reset the counter back to -1.

Hour 3 – 1: 3 (Threadscore -1)
Hour 3 – 2: 18
Hour 3 – 3: 7 (-5)
Hour 4 – 1: 19 (1/3 arm wrench)
Hour 4 – 2: 14 (she rolled a oneeeeeeeeeeeeee)
Hour 4 – 3:

Arlie was finding it hard not to lean to one side, the sting of Threadscore still lingering across their connection. How did Alegriath handle it so well when her rider wanted to cry? The fear was threatening to swallow her again, and it was only High Reaches' tested training that kept her numb enough to hear the order to make a firestone run. Pale and tense, the little girl and her little dragon grabbed their bags and jumped Between...

...into the Weyrleader's wing.

It was then that the young whiterider found that she had finally hit the bottom of her well of panic. Nothing else could issue out to claw her downward. Now there was only the wind, the feeling of her dragon beneath her, and the cloth weight of the bags in her hand. She felt almost like it was an out of body experience: someone else had tossed the Weyrleader his bag, and someone else had received that nod of thanks. And yet she was the one receiving the praise.

< You're doing so well, Arlielove! > Alegriath crooned as they wove in and out of the ranks, tossing out bags. When Arlie felt like her arm was going to give out, the white surged forward to compensate. Even when one still failed to get it right and she struggled to find another to quickly replace it, Alegriath was her loudest cheerleader. And for just a moment, she felt like maybe with some more practice, they could really do this. Maybe they needed to ask for remedial lessons, if they weren't already getting some.

...

Alegriath and Arlie were so small for their age, for their color. They could weave through the larger dragons for the run, but the wind was still their worst enemy. And after the gusts from earlier, Alegriath was more winded than she showed. She had tried so hard to look fine for her rider, who was ever anxious and in need of love, love that she would always give even when in pain. But love did not stop Thread, and it certainly didn't stop the wind.

They looked so small as they were yanked out of the wing. From a distance they might have been a curious looking wherry, or a small gathering of mutant flits. Or a ball, tossed about like the playthings of an invisible being, into the curtain of Thread between wings. White on white on gray on green on red.

Poof. Gone. And too soon back again, a mess of limbs and color shedding Thread and blood and ichor like a comet. And as Thread ate at them, they seemed to grow smaller still.

Quote:
12-14. Firestone run! A weyrlings primary purpose, after all. Roll 5 D100s. Odds were successful tosses that make their mark. Evens are botched tosses that result in a second or third throw needed. (No you don’t have to roll it, it is just assumed to have happened.)

If you roll Odds in the 90s you’ve botched getting stone to the Weyrleader or Weyrsecond. You’re ruined. If it’s evens, you land it on your first attempt and even get a nod of thanks! Amaaaazing!

If you roll Odds in the 30s you can tell you’ve pissed off a wingrider. If you roll evens, you wind up calling out and warning them of danger! You are a pro!

If you roll a 1 you and your dragon wind up getting KO’d on your way to deliver the stone. You wind up flying right into a patch of Thread (or blown into one) and the damage is so great you fall from the sky. Death is fine but not required. Your weyrling probably won’t be graduating on time though, due to the injury. Talk about a harsh blooding!

Maybe they'd been jostled a bit while she was being tended to, but despite Martirae's slightly better mood upon being back in the air making flaming go a lot more smoothly (thank goodness!) her straps were feeling a little...looser than before.

It was almost time to land for good, however. We can tough it out. Then we'll get a good week of rest so you heal up. Of course, Martirae wouldn't rest. She'd be back to the grindstone to make sure she never risked Anakumath this closely again.

W'ill's anger seethed through the bond between him and Faloth, and the pair swooped and dove as the brown flamed another clump of Thread -- this time without getting hurt! "Yeah!" W'ill cheered, then grabbed at his dragon's neck as a sudden sharp turn left him nearly floating in his straps, his rear hovering above Faloth's shoulders. Thank Faranth he had taken such pains when making his straps, because they held!

Quote:
5-6. Your adrenaline is pumping and you feel fit to fight! Whatever fears or worries you have, you’re absolutely ready to take the world by storm. Your dragon wheels and dives, and you wind up successfully flaming some strands. Of course, you also find yourself suddenly dangling in some mighty precarious positions as your dragon avoids getting smacked by a tangle of Thread. The straps you so valiantly worked on are the only thing keeping you from plummeting to your death. Let’s hope Thread doesn’t latch onto those thick leathers… and if they do, that your backup security straps work! Thankfully, as the fight continues, you focus on what’s important--flaming down Thread. If brown or bronze, you play a bit of hero. Knowing your dragon should be able to take a hit, you can Self-Sacrifice. Quote a wingmate and take their damage instead. While it may hurt you, it also means you were able to save the day.

Zyamel wasn't sure how long they'd been flying. Time seemed to go quickly in some moments, and drag on in the next. All she knew was she had to keep fighting, had to keep going. She encouraged Venandith, just as he encouraged her. This was what they were meant to do. Fight. Fight. Fight. Keep going. A cog in the great machine, but with every puff of smoke and ash, with every successful attack on Thread, they felt more and more certain that this was what they were born to do.

Unfortunately, Venandith was a large target, and Zyamel couldn't read when the wind changed. One moment they were flying after a tangle, and then next the wind had it kicking it right back at them. The brown tried to dodge, but he wasn't as agile as some of his smaller wingmates. Instead, he roared in offense as the silver tangles caught his face and neck, as well as wrap around his hind leg.

You DARE scar my-- His cursing about his beautiful face was cut off as Zyamel pressed her will against the brown and commanded he jump Between.

Sure enough, by the time they reappeared, though his eyes were bright red with annoyance and ire, they continued the fight. Everyone likes a rugged man. Zyamel assured.

Quote:
Ouch, ouch, ouch, and more ouch. When it rains it pours, or so the saying goes, and while some of your wingmates might be in relatively quiet airspace, the wind keeps kicking Thread into yours! While you and your dragon flame and charr the ancient enemy, it unfortunately doesn’t leave you unscathed. [*

Though they were meant to fight Thread, their primary duty was to deliver firestone to riders in need. Neither thought this would be an issue -- they were tough and strong and had been tossing stone for months now. Unfortunately, things weren't as smooth as they'd expected.

The first few tosses went without a hitch; the third one missed, much to her embarrassment, though her pride was assuaged when she landed stone to a Wingleader.

She just had to find her stride, right?

What little confidence she had, though, plummeted as quickly as the sack of firestone she threw at the Weyrsecond. Her aim had been off and the precious resources went down, down, down...

She was ruined. Done for.

Mouth dry, shame welling up, Zyamel was determined to do better. If she had to start throwing firestone at her fellow weyrlings for the next sevenday, she would.
