Rayon

Composition:
Uses: Full pans, A-lin skirts, boxy shirts, and full dresses.
Pre-Wash: No.
Needle: Fine point or ball point in 70/10 HJ or 70/10 HM.
Thread: Cotton.
Special Notes:
History of the Fabric:
Rayon is also known as Viscose. Its origins start in 1897, but mass production of the fibers didn't start until 1899. The name Rayon was adopted in 1924. Rayon as a clothing textile didn't start until theh 1930s.

Satin


Composition:
Uses: Wedding gowns, evening dresses, purses, Shirts, skirts.
Pre-Wash: No necessary
Needle: 70/10 HJ or HM
Thread: Cotton or silk fine machine embroidery.
Special Notes:
History of the Fabric:
Satin has it's origins in the Tang and Northern Song periods of Chinese history. It was introduced into Europe in the 12th Century with Italy starting Satin production. Because of the import prices during this period, it was a material for the wealthy.

The origins for this textile is Shandong, China. It's known to reach Europe during the Renaissance period.

Silk


Composition:
Uses: Nightgowns, lingerie, robes, eveningwear, blouses, suits, sport coats, curtains, pillow ruffles, parachutes, bicycle tires, medical dressings
Pre-Wash:
Needle: 60/8, 70/10

History of the Fabric:
Silk was invented in China using the cocoons of the silk worm Legend says that it was invented 6500 BC by the wife of Legendary Emperor Xi Ling-Shi. When she noticed the threads on the mulberry trees. With the rise of the Silk Road, many cultures learned how to do the process themselves. Because of it's limited time for gathering each year, silk is one of the most expensive fabrics out there.
Silk has be prized and highly valued since early history. During Ancient and Midieval periods the only want to get silk was through the silk roads, until the techinques were carried into Europe and was wide spread by the 11th century.

Spandex


Composition: Polyester
Uses: form fitting clothing such as shorts, leggings, shirts, bodysuits, active/athletic wear, stretch lining
Pre-Wash: No need to.
Needle: Stretch Needles
Special Notes: Do no use cotton thread with this fabric type. If you're using it for swimsuits or active wear it can rott in wet conditions.
History of the Fabric:
Developed during WWII as an alternative to rubber.

Suede


Composition:
Uses: Shoes, jackets, gloves, hats, bags, apparel lining, seat covers, belts
Pre-Wash: No necesary
Needle: 70/10 HJ for lightweight and glovers sewing needle
Thread: Polyester only
Special Notes:
History of the Fabric:
Suede is the surface of animal hides and is one of the oldest forms of fabric. The term suede was not coined until 1859 and is from a French advertisement.

Taffeta

Uses: Wedding gowns, evening wear, blouses, party attire, curtains, insulation, sleeping bags
Pre-Wash: Not necessary
Needle: 70/10 HJ or 70/10 HM
Thread: Cotton
Special Notes:
History of the Fabric:
The earliest records of taffeta is written in Middle English and was a popular material in historical costumes.

Terry Cloth

Uses: Towels and handcloths, water absorbtion

Needle: 80/12 H or 90/12 H
Thread: Cotton or polyester
Special Notes:
History of the Fabric:
The earliest forms of terrycloth trace back to 4000BC in both Egypt and Peru. The modern form of the material traces to the mid-19th century and based from a Turkish design.

Tweed

Uses: Jackets, pants, hats, trench coats, blazers, other outerwear, winter clothing, suit jackets, military uniforms (historically)

History of the Fabric:
Originally woven in 1700s by Scottish Farmers to help with the cold weather. It started to become popular in the Victorian period, but mostly with the upper class. It became popular with the middle class during the Edwardian period.

Velvet

Composition:
Uses: Upholstery, wall hangings, dresses, eveningwear, formal robes, dresses, bedding, hats
Pre-Wash: Dry clean
Needle: stretch needles at 75/11 HS needed for stretch velvet, but sharps at 70/10 HJ or HM for regular velvet.
Thread: Cotton, Polyester, or Silk.

History of the Fabric:
First woven during the middle ages. It was woven in Baghdad somewhere between 786-809. It was primarily used for royality. We know that it was in England no later than the 1300s.

Uses: Stage curtains, bathrobes, hats, dance wear, upholstery, jewelry cases, sweaters, jackets, pants, shirts, tracksuits, dresses
Pre-Wash: Yes, prepare for shrink
Needle: 75/11 HS
Thread: Cotton or polyester.

History of the Fabric:
The earliest record of this fabric started in the 1840s.
