MeZergy I ALWAYS use Pilot pens to ink my drawings and I ALWAYS use BIC mechanical pencils for sketching. You say not to get Prismacolor markers? gonk Too late. I like them, but I've never used any other marker (besides crayola rolleyes ) Totally!
Except I barely ever colour any of my drawings. If I do I use Crayola coloured pencils. Because you can vary the same colour alot easier, from pressing harder or w/e.
But! As soon as my Wacom tablet comes into the mail (My only Hannukah gift this year! ^^) everything I draw will be digitized, and put up around the net. And I'm opening a shop and drawing tutorials for newcomers!

I'm not a pro yet (I'm only 14!) but here is what I use...
Paper?
A thicker copier paper. If I stick an old sheet of scap paper underneath, I usually keep my desk clean... I also use a skectchpad, when I've got one. When at school, I often practice on notebookpaper. I tried nice, heavy watercolor paper a few times. I'm always afraid I'll ruin it sweatdrop
Drawing?
Mechie pencils... whatever kind I can get my paws on.
Inking?
Yet again; whatever black pen I can get my hands on (I have a fancy micron, but gel pilot ones are good, too). No ballpoints, though.
Coloring?
I wuv my prisma markers! No offese, but I don't have the 60 dollars to spend on a 12 pack of copics... I had to save FOREVER for my prisma ones! I just got a set of prisma pencils for Xmas, but I also use crayolas. Aaaand then there's photoshop... I have a rather old (it only works in OS9 or lower) tablet. It's quite nice!
I'm not a professional, though; I just draw for fun. And sometimes gaia gold.

I don't really use all those fancy papers and pen-nibs (being from another country and all...), but I improvise ;D
Paper... Printing paper for me all the way, I use cardstock/watercolour paper if I need to use watercolours or markers (they don't warp). I like the smooth surface of printing paper, my pencils won't look like it has a serious case of dandruff and blending is a lot easier X3
Inking and Sketching... For sketching I just use a regular .5mm Mechanical pencil. Malaysians should be familiar with the 'Buncho' brand of mechanical pencil leads; they're nice and soft (the downside is that they break a little easier), meaning that you can get nice black lines. So nice, in fact, you don't even need to ink your works XD
For inks I just UniPin pens, ranging from 0.1 - 1.0, but I have been using these Marvy brand ones. Very nice, but they're inks are a little translucent (making them look a bit gray). I have a handy bottle of ink and some markers to fill in dark areas :3 I also have some white gel pens for those 'light dot' effects and adding highlights 3nodding
Colouring... Traditionally, I use mostly coloured pencils and watercolours. The thing I find interesting about the latter is that they sorta give the same effect like markers, at least that's how it works for me sweatdrop I prefer working with watercolours and pencils partially because they're cheaper, and they won't put a dent in your pocket if you decide to buy more/another brand (more variety = heart ) Plus, they last for a pretty long time. I've been using the same box of coloured pencils from 3 or 4 years back. For blending I just use tissue paper, you can erase the excessive bits off, and you get some pretty effects X3
Digitally, I'm a Photoshop person. I mean, Painter and OC are very nice programs, I'm sure, but with enough playing around, you can get the same effects wink
Screentoning... Believe it or not, screentones don't come cheap here (despite the fact that every other Japanese product here is cheap), so it's either taking the comic into Photoshop, or doing it by hand.
I find that using lines for tones creates a very nice effect. This artist here didn't use any screentones AT ALL for her works, and it's still a hell lot better than works using screentones. True, it may take longer, but it's worth it.

Yeah, a lot of good art supplies are really expensive! But somehow I manage to buy copics when I have the time to go to the art store...
Paper-As for paper, I'm kinda experimenting right now.
Inking-I got a copic multiliner, but I have three other inking pens!
Pencils-I sometimes use a mechanical pencil, but otherwise I use this other pencil that's no mechanical, not wooden, and no eraser (weird, I know.)
As for an eraser, it's just a normal, rectangular, pink eraser 3nodding

I would like the good stuff, like the special paper and the Copic markers for my work, but I am poor and can't afford the good stuff. Sigh.
I just go to AC Moore and get a decent sketchbook (a splurge for me), regular old HB 2 pencils, a Sanford pack of art erasers (plastic, gum, and kneaded rubber), and Faber-Castell artist pens (S, M, L, and B).
I started out with printer paper, #2 pensils, and Sharpie markers for my first comic. Eventually I got india ink, but now I prefer the artist pens, as they are more comfortable to me.
Someday I will get Copic markers...I dare to dream, I know!

Are the expensive drawing materials truly worth the price? Or is it kind of just like Starbucks, a symbol of greatness or whatever?^^; *not trying to be offensive* I ask, because, not only are they quite expensive wherever you look, but I haven't got any shops to browse in except, like, a WalMart. (and not even a Super WalMart, at that x.x ) Can you truly not do the same thing with a pack of Crayola colored pencils as with Prismacolor? (I /do/ hear Prismas are waxier than Crayola, for better blending, but... =/ )

Meh, NeoPiko are okay. Prismacolor are better, I think. Pretty much anything you can think of for art (including Copics) can be ordered on d**k Blick's website. I don't do manga and doujinshi, I just do stand-alone illustrations, so I don't have much of a use for the manga paper, lol.

Ishrie Mechanical pencils don't work very well for shading, and rarely come in any type other than HB, which (for me, at least) is hell on sketching. And I counted how many licks when I was in 3rd grade. X{D;; 445. I did it in the 3rd grade also, i got to 500, the bell rang and i had to stop...so its not the same for everyone. smile ......dunno, had to let that out
