Physical Description: Though he is not one of the taller men on Pern at 5'9", Aerden is compact and muscular with broad shoulders. His hair is a rich auburn color and cut short for convenience. His most distinctive feature is a mess of snaking scars on the left side of his neck and shoulder from a near-fatal encounter with thread. His skin is pale, so the red remains of threadscore are extremely prominent.

Personality: For the majority of Aerden’s life, he has craved to be useful. With no particular skill set to set him apart, no real way to help aid his mother, he was left entirely frustrated by his own apparent uselessness. He wants to help people, genuinely and sincerely, even if he doesn’t always know always the best option to take. Though he’s an intelligent young man, he doesn’t trust his own opinion enough to take control. In truth, Aerden feels very isolated from people. In his mind, his birth was a mistake. His mother would have been much better off without him (though she’d never made him feel that way in the slightest), and as a result, he’s extremely comfortable with the thought of dying if it meant sacrificing himself to save another.

Aerden is a quiet man, usually choosing to observe and watch others rather than openly engage. Still, if someone needs a hand, he will immediately offer his aid, and he is a courteous individual. Not much riles him up at all, and even in intense situations, Aerden can remain calm and rational. He’s a person with genuinely good intentions, which is why becoming a dragonrider appeals so much. What could be more honorable than defending the entire planet and its people against Thread? And if he dies in battle, then it was a death worth having.

Though a steady and reliable person, the man finds that the tried and true method is the best default. He isn’t a person who thinks outside the box if there’s a method that works well! This can cause problems, especially if the situation turns for the worst. He’ll look for leadership first rather than seize control, automatically assuming that others will know better than him.

Aerden is a soldier, and a damn good one. But without a capable commander, he will falter and fail.

History: Aerden has been a vagabond for most of his life, wandering across of Pern in search of something. He was born at Rivercrest Hold in one of the numerous brothels. He never knew his father. His mother often claimed he was a great pirate captain, wealthy and charming; Aerden often wondered how this could be true, for surely such a man wouldn’t have left his mother to work in a place like Rivercrest. Though his mother loved him deeply and Aerden did what he could to help earn money, he was fully aware that he was a burden upon her. He came to hate Rivercrest and its small corruptions, and once old enough to fend for himself, he left and didn’t return.

Lacking any sort of real skill or training, Aerden was able to find work with small mercenary groups. He took direction well and was a quick study, taking to fighting and swordplay. The more his skills improved, the more his company began to rely on him. The money he earned was sent back to his mother, and eventually, as the group’s work began to turn more unsavory, Aerden left. He didn’t want to be a thug for hire. He wanted to help people--and whenever he could, he did so. Unfortunately, the world didn’t run on kindness, but Aerden accepted food or a place to sleep in lieu of marks.

As he traveled across Pern, he would join up with other companies now and again, seeking to improve his skills. In truth, Aerden was far from satisfied with what he was doing. Still, it was the only life he knew--the only thing he could do. At least, that was what he’d thought until the return of Thread.

Aerden had the good fortune of being on the back of the dragon when Thread truly started to fall. Several mercenaries in his current company were dragonriders, so naturally, the easiest form of transportation was to fly. Though the young man had been wounded before, no pain would ever compare to the sensation of thread slamming into the left side of his neck and shoulder. Fortunately, rider and dragon reacted instinctively, taking them Between. Badly injured and near death, the panicked rider dropped Aerden off at the place that they’d met their dragon... Western Weyr.

The mercenary nearly died that day, but was slowly coaxed back to health over time (and due to a Masterhealer showing up a few days after thread’s fall). He owed Western more than he could ever imagine--and upon seeing the destruction that the returning Thread had wrecked upon the mostly unprepared Pern, it made perfect sense as to what he had to do. He needed to remain, to help those who could truly defend the planet…

And maybe, if he were lucky, join their ranks.

Aerden has been at Western for two years now as a Candidate, but helps out in the medical bay whenever he absolutely can.

Origin of Name: Tianxiath, for the Chinese word tianxia... which means "all under heaven." Tianxia is now used in the modern day as a synonym for the word cosmopolitan.

Inspiration: Cosmopolitan

A cosmopolitan, or informally a cosmo, is a cocktail made with vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, and freshly squeezed or sweetened lime juice.

The International Bartenders Association recipe is based on vodka citron, lemon-flavored vodka. The cosmopolitan is a relative of cranberry coolers like the Cape Codder. Though often presented far differently, the cosmopolitan also bears a likeness in composition to the kamikaze cocktail.

The origin of the cosmopolitan is disputed.

While the cocktail is widely perceived to be a more modern creation, there is a strikingly similar recipe for a cosmopolitan which appears in Pioneers of Mixing at Elite Bars 1903-1933, published in 1934.

Jigger of Gordon's Gin (1 1⁄2 US fl oz [4.4 cl] Beefeater)
2 dash Cointreau (1⁄2 US fl oz [1.5 cl] Cointreau)
Juice of 1 Lemon (1 US fl oz [3.0 cl] Lemon Juice)
1 tsp [.5 cl] Raspberry Syrup (homemade)

Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

Made with ingredients that would have been readily available during the period, this identically named cocktail aims for the same effect. If this drink is in fact the source of the modern cosmopolitan, then it would be an adaption of a Daisy rather than a Kamikaze.

One version of the creation of this popular drink credits the accomplishment to the gay community in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

Bartender Neal Murray says he created the cosmopolitan in 1975 at the Cork & Cleaver steak house in Minneapolis. According to Murray, he added a splash of cranberry juice to a Kamikaze and the first taster declared, "How cosmopolitan." This event supposedly led to the naming of the new beverage.

John Caine is the owner of several popular bars in San Francisco and a cosmopolitan expert. He partially credits the upsurge in cocktails during the 1970s to the Cosmo being served at fern bars. Caine is credited with bringing the Cosmo west from Cleveland.

There are a number of other claims made as to the origin of the cosmopolitan. Cocktail historian Gary Regan credits bartender Cheryl Cook of the Strand Restaurant in South Beach, Florida with the original creation. Some people think that Cook is a mythical character, but in a letter to Regan, Cook related the story of how she created the drink in 1985 or 1986:

What overwhelmed me was the number of people who ordered Martinis just to be seen with a Martini glass in their hand. It was on this realization that gave me the idea to create a drink that everyone could palate and was visually stunning in that classic glass. This is what the Cosmo was based on.
Cook's original recipes called for "Absolut Citron, a splash of Triple sec, a drop of Rose's lime and just enough cranberry to make it oh so pretty in pink." Although Absolut Citron was not introduced anywhere officially until 1988, it was test marketed in Miami.

Notable bartender Gaz Regan says that the internationally recognized version of the cocktail was created by Toby Cecchini & Melissa Huffsmith-Roth in 1989 At The Odeon restaurant in Manhattan based on a poorly described version of Cheryl Cook's creation.

According to Sally Ann Berk and Bob Sennett, the cosmopolitan appears in literature as early as 1993 and derives from New York City.

Whatever its origin, the cosmopolitan gained popularity in the 1990s. It was further popularized among young women by its frequent mention on the television program Sex and the City, where Sarah Jessica Parker's character, Carrie Bradshaw, commonly ordered the drink when out with her girlfriends. The film adaptation made a reference to its popularity when Miranda asks why they stopped drinking them, Carrie replies "because everyone else started."

Personality: Tianxiath is a man of exceeding refinement. He has many leather bound records, and his wallow smells of rich mahogany. Or it would, if it smelled the way he imagines that it should! Don't let any of that take away from the most important thing: Tianxiath himself. He is, and has been, and always will be the very best of the best. A blue among blues, he holds himself in high esteem. He is ready and willing to tell everyone about his favorite pursuits, and shall listen with only a modicum of interest to anything they might have to say in return.

But he is a dragon of the world! He is aware and emulates all of the latest trends from Igen and Ista, from Benden, and Fort! If there can be said to be a fashion among dragonkind, Tianxiath is already a wind of it. He might even be sporting it. Perhaps he even set it himself. A jolly fellow, if a trifle high on himself, Tianxiath will have no trouble at all making shallow acquaintanceships, although how long they'll last is purely a matter of how long the other parties can tolerate his overweening pride.

The world is his oyster, and he fully intends to wring every last bit of enjoyment and indulgence out of it. If others might judge him for it, clearly that is their mistake. Relax, sit back, and live life to the fullest! You only live once, and Tianxiath is bound and determined to live it up. What he doesn't like so much is the fact that there is all of this duty in his way. Why can't he lounge about and bury himself in pretties from all over Pern? It's certainly not fair that everything cannot simply be handed to him, as he certainly deserves it.

Physical Attributes: An excessively large blue, Tianxiath is surprisingly fit for how lazy he is... probably due to his tendency to throw himself up into every Flight that comes his way.

Additional Notes: If there is one thing that can get Tianxiath off of his ledge, it is the promise of a good time as represented by a Flight. Blue, green, brown, bronze, gold... it doesn't matter, so long as Tianxiath is smothering himself in adoration. Namely, the adoration of others who can croon into his headknobs about what a man he is. And he is that, for it is to be noted that his Flight partners tend to go away happy indeed. If a little fed up with him.

Impression Effect: Tianxiath will immediately impart animal magnetism on Aerden along with a certain suave sophistication that is difficult to describe. There's just something about his air that is so... je ne sais quoi. A refinement inexplicable and appealing.

Why Me? Aerden needs more good times in his life, according to a certain blue dragon. Tianxiath is an unrelenting hedonist, and he is determined to spend the rest of his days wallowing in the sheers pleasures of life! However, he does need Aerden's dedication and selflessness to recenter him around his true purpose as a dragon of Pern. They are each other's balance, pure and simple. If Tianxiath adds a touch of class and sophistication to his rider, so much the better! Although Aerden balks at ambition, it is his dragon's destiny to climb, climb, climb to the top. Together they will thrive. Equal and opposing forces or yoked together, they possess qualities that will assure them the success that Tianxiath is so sure they richly deserve - if Aerden can keep Tianxiath from showboating his life away.
