Besciuth watched her come close, his currently purple eyes alight with pure joy. Yes, let them dance, he very much wanted to do that with the beautiful gold. He knew there was a lot of competition, but as she rose, he knew the time for making her choice was near and he would do all he could to answer her call.

It would be my pleasure to rise with you, my queen. I but hope you chose me, to dance further with,he thought to her, before he began to climb. He knew that his wings were tiring, but he was not ready to call it quits. No, he was even more determined than before to show her how beautifully they could dance together.


Caltor watched Vosin carefully, to see what she was planning on doing. He would wait for her to make a move, keeping his eyes on the flight and picking up what was happening from his dragon. He mentally encouraged the brown, reminding him he could do this.

And that...was that, he thought. Dhumavath was tired. Not physically, as he was a workbeast even in his worst moods, but everywhere else. To know what it had felt like to be special to someone made everything else dull and washed out in comparison. To fight and fly and dance and sing sweet nothings to whatever was rising that moment, day in and day out, guided by instinct and base desire rather than anything meaningful and deep and true...To have loved a love that was more than love, and now have nothing but the everyday and mundane?

He was so very tired.

Lost in his thoughts, Dhumavath barely noticed the gnat that bit him. He was already slowing, awaiting the end of the flight just as he awaited the end of everything else. At least from down below he could watch that bitter moment when many more would-be dreams would crash against one another in a beautiful fallout. Anger. Regret. Consolation. Acceptance. He had already run the cycle; let the rest run it squealing.

Killakeeth pushed herself as high as she could go. Happily she noted that she made it higher than she’d done before. Around her the males also pointed their muzzles upward. There were so many handsome males to admire. They had done her flight proud and she acknowledged them. A queen couldn’t possibly ask for any better suitors than you. It has been a pleasure to fly among you this morning. The reds were fading from her eyes that were quickly dominated by purple as her desire consumed her.

Despite her wanted to choose several of them, only one could come out on top. Killakeeth evaluated the best performers. Perhaps among one of them she’d find a mate worthy to sire this clutch. Without a doubt Sigurath had flown the best this whole time. The bronze was clearly a superior specimen of his color, but she was looking for something more.

She drifted as she considered valiant Turoth. The bronze had also flown well and made his weyr proud. The large gold crooned affectionately to the bronze. Although he’d done very well too, there was something more she wanted. So Killakeeth turned her eyes upon the final consideration. Teth had done extremely well for a brown against so many others. The gold also considered her other suitors. She wasn’t going to limit herself. Was there any there that had sparked her desire?

Vosin sent her dragon love and assurance. Choose well and follow your hearts my dear. Suddenly her mind was made up. Killakeeth knew who she wanted. She bugled and sent her feelings to her chosen mate. Come to me, my Teth! Together we shall paint the skies and all of Pern will know! The gold held out her claws to the brown, twining with him as they fell.

He was so close... so close! Turoth did his best to chase Killakeeth with all his hearts and all his might, but in the end she chose another. Fighting thread and chasing queens were the only times the bronze got competitive, but as the golden dragon chose the lone brown that had managed to stand against a hoard of others, Turoth sent them off with a trumpet of happiness. Even if he wasn't going to be a father again the weyr would soon have a new clutch to coo over and for that he was thankful. He didn't send them words nor feelings, leaving them to their dance, but despite his loss he was still warm and happy within, albeit less so than he would have been if it had been him catching Killakeeth.

On the ground, Ar'ad felt his companion's bittersweet emotions. While it would have been a great picker-upper to feel the joy that being a father brought Turoth again, Ar'ad knew the queen had chosen who was right for her and that his bronze would be the first in line to congratulate them. His Turoth was a fighter when he needed to be but a gentledragon at all other times. He rolled his shoulders a bit before shifting, ready to head back to a less populated area to see if he could grab someone to share in the flightlust with.
