Don't know if it's been suggested yet or not (Edit: It has a few times, but just reiterating!), but I highly suggest:
The Mortal Instruments Trilogy by Cassandra Clare - first book being City of Bones
I knew of the author when she wrote fanfics for none-other-than Harry Potter. Her Draco trilogy was fantastic; a tad bit better than the actual series in my opinion since as fanfic, Cassandra could get a bit more dicey with things (and actually make romantic relationships between the characters). So when I heard of her making her own original works, I jumped on the gun to get the Mortal Instruments. (Sadly, the Draco Trilogy was removed from the web because of the publication, but I've saved the files for it. Haha.)
Anywho, it's basically the story of this girl named Clary. To sum up, her mother gets kidnapped by demons and she has to rely on these Shadowhunters or Nephilim - human/angel hybrids that hunt demons to keep the balance (no, no wings or anything like that, but yes for wicked cool rune "tattoos") - to get her mother back. Includes the demons, vampires, werewolves, and faeries as well to name a few. A whole new world opens up to Clary that was hidden to her, much like Harry (except without the school).
It's a Young Adult series, so it's a fairly easy read, and all 3 books of the first trilogy have been released. Cassandra is releasing 2 more trilogy that are a part of the Mortal Instruments universe, so I look forward to those.
I love Cassandra's writing since I knew her as a fanfic author. She is a fan, and thusly knows what a fan wants to get. Lots of beating around the bush and angst in getting people together, drama, snarky hot guys, lots of mythical creatures to oogle over (but not so many you get lost), "jaw-dropping" twists... oh, and don't forget love triangles. We love those.
I'm particularly over-joyed that Cassandra was willing to write a gay couple into the story. And honestly, they are some of my favorite characters in the series.

Some other books by Rick Riordan like: The Red Pyramid, and I forget what the one that is coming out soon is called
And personally I like those series too and another one that I've found to be really good is: The Ranger's Apprentice by John Flanagan
Pretty much anything by Terry Pratchett is good
The girl with the Dragon Tattoo is also good, but not great.
One other book that I absolutely love is: The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. That book is the best book that I have ever read, he is coming out with the second book in the three book series on March 7th (I believe, it might be May 7th though) of 2011, I highly recommend it if you can get past the first 60-80 pages (it is very very long, but not a single word is pointless, it flows wonderfully and has one of the best story lines I think I have ever read. Infinitely better than twilight which I couldn't even get past the first paragraph it was so bad in my opinion.) I cannot say enough good things about this book, it... was just incredible and after I finished it, I started re-reading it the same day, because later that day I felt like I had a void in my life because I couldn't pick it up to continue the story.
And those are all the books that I can think of right now, Good luck finding good books smile

Eh. I don't really read much of anything besides manga. Though, I would recommend probably anything by Steven King. *I think that's his name* You know...the author of 'Pet Cemetary' and 'Rose Red'?

Well, I personally really enjoy the American/Michigan chillers books. They are very good due to the suspense and cliff hangers from the author. Check it out.
