With her small frame, Skerath was a natural at quick, heart-stopping maneuvers. They might be risky, but Iathe had complete and utter trust in her dragon. As Skerath whipped around, dove, and spun, Iathe crouched low against the Green's neck, trusting the straps she'd meticulously checked to hold her safely in place. Fortunately, they held--and Skerath belched forth a torrent of flames to incinerate writhing strands into harmless ash.

10. Someone call you butter, because you’re on a roll! Not only do you manage to flame down every target you go after, but formation changes are a breeze. Honestly, you’re feeling mighty proud of yourself and your dragon right now. Unfortunately, your luck doesn’t hold as the fighting carries on. One minute you were flying high, and the next minute something… something suddenly isn’t right. Oh no! You feel one of your straps begin to loosen. Did you not pull it tight enough? Was it a flaw in the design? Is it just bad luck!? While you’re okay for now, any jarring motions or wheels and dives make you feel just a little more closer to slipping off and out. [If this is your third time rolling this prompt, your straps actually break. While you are still connected to your dragon thanks to emergency straps, you have no choice but to return to the Weyr--much to your shame--and get your spare. Lose 2 rolls.]

All of their training had paid off, and Iathe practically glowed with pride for her feisty dragon. When Skerath twisted again to flame, Iathe suddenly lurched hard to one side, her heart leaping into her throat. Mine? Skerath was instantly aware of her spike of fear, but there was nothing to be done. For now, the strap was holding.

I'm fine. Stay focused. She sent a wave of reassurance through the bond, and Skerath didn't hesitate to switch her attention back to the fight.

While you've managed to spit flame at the Enemy and char it into dust, you clearly need to work on your firestone toss because you wrenched an arm muscle during your last throw. Ow. [If this is your 3rd time rolling, you take -4 HP from all the tongue-biting and arm wrenching, and quote a Weyrling to take -5HP from damage.]

Though they'd made an impressive start of things, Skerath was beginning to get tired. Iathe's shoulder throbbed from a particularly bad toss of firestone. Skerath's tongue ached in sympathy, having been bitten before. The pain was making them both irritable. The worst part came from Iathe missing a signal--and Skerath nearly collided with another Weyrling. She hissed loudly, snapping her jaws even as she quickly zipped back into formation. Iathe could only cringe and apologize, which her dragon accepted immediately. They had to pay better attention.

After their first solo betweening lesson, where they had lost two of Nanuth's family, Zamistia was feeling a bundle of nerves. She listened to V'res, today was the day that they fought Thread for the first time and it terrified her. The red head nervously checked over everything as they got their instructions, wanting to make sure everything was as it should be.

My light, I know you are scared, but lean on me. I will do everything in my power to get you back here safely,Nanuth thought gently into her head. He would have enough strength for both of them, he would not let his little red head down. He turned his head around, to make sure she got safely into her straps, before he took off and blinked between to head to their coordinate for Threadfall.

I will try my best, Nanuth, the petite girl responded. When they got to their destination, she allowed Nanuth's confidence to seep into her through their bond. She watched as he took down some strands of thread, his adrenaline at being up here dealing with their ancient enemy helping her too. Though, there was some awkward positions, her straps held exactly as they should. She let Nanuth work on flaming down Thread, giving all the encouragement she could. She even noticed one of their fellow wingmates in trouble, should she point it out to her dragon?

Nanuth, someone needs help,she instructed.

On it, ZamistiaMine!Nanuth assured, before flying between the Thread and his family member.

Determined to make up for that last slip, Skerath tapped deep into her flagging energy in order to pull off another brilliant bit of wing work. Thread stood no chance against Skerath's flames, and the green shot through the burning ash to avoid another clump. The damage was minor, but Iathe's skin pricked in response to the burning pain that Skerath shoved aside. Careful. Iathe cautioned.

Just as Skerath was about to reply, her eyes went red. Someone was falling--a tangled mess of limbs and blood and ichor, streaking down through the wing. The green could do nothing to help the pair, screaming her fury as Alegriath was devoured slowly by Thread. Not again! Not another one of hers! ALEGRIATH! She bellowed, furious, terrified. That idiot! That stupid, blistering fool! Open your wings! Fight it!

Iathe grit her teeth so hard her jaws ached, and, what felt almost callously, forced herself to focus back on the task at hand. They could do nothing for Arlie and Alegriath now except pray that someone caught them--and that it wasn't already too late. Roaring with hate, Skerath flapped hard, wanting nothing more than to fill the skies with ash and flame.

Though unable to do anything for their falling wingmate, they could help the others! Venandith! Above and to your left! Oh, she would have PLENTY of scathing remarks for him later about that! Who was saving who now?!

Nanuth was feeling even better, as he managed to flame down some more Thread from the sky. He even made sure to put in some very fancy aerial moves, which he hoped would be quite impressive to all who saw them. He felt like he could handle this, he was made to handle thread.

Nanuth, can you please slow down. All those moves, are making my head spin,Zamistia requested. She knew they needed to hop between, so she tried to focus on the coordinates. They managed to get between and back out without trouble...it was where they ended up that wasn't so great. Zamistia squeaked when she noticed they were quite a bit outside of formation. Not only that, but she freaked out when she saw they were going to collide with one of their fellow Weyrlings.

Look out!Nanuth bugled to his family member.

If having caused a wingmate to be hurt hadn't been bad enough for Zamistia, it seemed that Thread was falling all around them. She didn't know if it was just them or if some of their fellow Weyrlings were dealing with it being this bad as well. She knew Nanuth was doing the best he could, flaming down the Thread that he could get to. Unfortunately, a piece that he didn't notice managed to hit her arm. A cry of pain from her, had Nanuth jumping quickly into Between, so they could get the Thread off. When they returned three breaths later, she felt the concerned mental nudge from him.

I..I am okay, Nanuth. Just..hurt a bit,Misty tried to assure shakily.

I am sorry, my light, I should have protected you better,he apologized, wrapping her up in a mental blanket of love and strength.

9. It’s all the little stuff that is causing you problems! One minute your airspace is clear, another minute you find it full of Thread. Where is your cover!? If you’re a bronze or brown rider, you can’t help but feel that the smaller colors aren’t doing their jobs in trying to keep your dragon safe. If you’re a white, green, or blue rider, you almost start to suspect the larger color you’re covering is just using you as some meat shield and not bothering to flame like they should. Whether it’s actually true, or paranoia from all the stress, you can feel your irritation levels rise. Aren’t you supposed to be on a team and work together? Ugh! Damage -3 HP.

Were these idiots even trying?! Skerath snarled as Thread bit into her shoulder, and vanished Between with her rider's quick guidance. Even the chilling darkness failed to put a damper on her ire, and Iathe could feel it bleeding into her own emotions. Could any of this been prevented? Was someone slacking? She needed to remain rational, but it was shed when all she wanted to do was punch someone in the mouth. No one was deliberately messing up.

Skerath did not agree. How many had already voiced their opinion that the smaller chromatics were expendable? Where was Venandith with all his brazen self-superiority? Or Alquemieth and his blatant disregard for anything but a sparkling golden hide? All she could do was seethe.

After the light admonition that they needed to focus, it seemed the Thread heard her, as the clumps fell harder, thicker, faster... or perhaps that was just that they were deliberately being forced into the thick of it so some other dragon might be spared....Both Faranie and Samedith bristled at the shared thought.

But there was no time for them to fume over their favorite injustice. A small clump made its way through, and they weren't quite swift enough to avoid the silver strands that brushed the side of the blue's tail. It wasn't bad, a simple graze, but Faranie directed them Between just enough to make damn sure it was dead, and there would be no damage too bad that a little Numbweed couldn't handle it.

They would focus and do better from here on out.

At least now, a firestone run, should be easier. A welcome break from the clumps of Thread and the dodging... It should be no trouble at all to gather the sacks of firestone and deliver to those who might be running low....

But in their haste to get going and prove themselves, both Faranie and Samedith forgot about their loosened straps... The bags weren't balanced well, and when she went to toss te stone to the wingrider, it took her a few attempts, but the stone got into their hands... eventually.

But it was when they were to deliver the stone to the 'Second that it all went to hell. The bag's tie on the strap snapped or came undone or something, and it started to fall, causing them to need to twist and turn to keep the bag from falling completely. They managed that much, but only just. And to add insult to injury, it took something like three tosses to get the stone to it's intended target...

How mortifying.

It was... a rough start, to say the least. F'enn's unique mix of apathy and smugness had bled into something approaching anxiety as the day crept closer, and realizing how very small and fragile his Zezo—sweet, innocent, too good for him, well-meaning Zezo—really was had him making ample mistakes. It had been a mistake to take second shift, as seeing the rest of them fight, bleed, fall... it wasn't doing him any favors, and when the time came he nearly steered the poor green right into a larger wingmate, leaving her trilling tender apologies as they raced back into formation.

Appearances mattered, after all. And though she took it all very seriously, Samodith was confident and unruffled. They'd been training for this. They were made for this.

Once it was finally time, the green took to the air with a surge of savage delight. Even when the edge of her wing was scored almost immediately, her enthusiasm wasn't dampened in the least, and she was quick to reassure Hers that it was nothing.

Not even enough to call a scratch, dearest.
