Aerden and Blue Tianxiath
Fit/In Great Shape
1/3 Final Leg
Points: 16

Mine. Tianxiath sounded uncharacteristically focused, easily catching up to Aerden once he put his mind to it. Up there, see? We can cut through there and be that much closer to the beach.

We could. But we don't need to cheat to win, right? Aerden wasn't going to break the rules anyway, but by gently implying that they were good enough...

Of course not. Tianxiath snorted. It just means we could be done faster so we don't have to keep doing this.

"We're gonna keep doin' this." Aerden grunted out loud, and Tianxiath heard the finality in his tone. Sigh.

Aerden and Blue Tianxiath
Fit/In Great Shape
2/3 Final Leg
Points: 19

Clearly his dragon had too much time to think! Aerden knew they were close to the beach, and, summoning up the last of his strength, he began to push himself into a sprint. The blue had no choice but to lengthen his own stride, unable to help but feel a bit playful as he bounded after his rider.

Tianxiath's enthusiasm was enough to make a grin break out on his own face. See? Running could be fun!

Quote:
2-3. You were born to run! At least, that's how you're feeling. You're not sure how but you find yourself feeling the need to sprint. Now's the time, right? The end is right there. Let's give it our all and sprint as fast as we can! [+2 Points] If you're of an Active fitness level, sprinting comes naturally. Gain an extra point. [+1 active]

3/3 Final Leg

He could see the beach, but he was also aware of how exhausted and thirsty he was. No problem--just a little farther and then he could rest... Tianxiath crooned with encouragement before letting out a sharp bark of alarm. Aerden swerved hard, just barely managing to avoid a stray dragon tail lashing out! That would have hurt! Still, no harm, no foul, and he was able to keep going without incident.

Quote:
8-9. Just keep going. The beach is right there! Ugh. You're tired, sweaty, wet, and thirsty. Surely, you can cross that finish line without incident, right? Roll a D4. Odds, you find yourself hit with a weyrling dragons tail! Which weyrling? The Weyrling who posted above you (or the first person above you other than yourself). The tail takes you out and sends you tumbling into a heap. Whether or not there's any minor damage is up to you--but you're sure going to be smarting as you limp to the finish line. [-4 points] Evens, you're able to duck away in time, though it was awfully close. Watch where you're going, road hog! :V [+2 points]

Tianxiath roll!
Points: 24

Almost there! Almost! Tianxiath bugled, caught up in the victory of Aerden's near-miss. He wasn't hesitating to bask in his rider's success, and he was going to make sure everyone knew it! You're the best there is, baby! No one can stop you!

Aerden's sprint slowly tapered into staggering steps as he reached the beach, wiping the rain and sweat off his face while he struggled to catch his breath. "See?" He managed to say. "Not so bad." His opinion would change when he would later realize some of his friends had gotten hurt, but for now? He was riding that runner's high. He began to walk to help himself cool down, even if all he wanted to do was collapse into the sand. His body wouldn't thank him for it later.

Yeah, yeah. Next time, we'll try my idea of fun. Tianxiath nosed His adoringly, giving himself a good shake before he sat down. That was enough physical activity for him, thanks!

After all of that, though, Lyfrocier wasn't about to immediately pick back up at his previous pace. Guarath helped him stand up with a little well-placed support, the last notes of a screech still threatening to spill out of her at--honestly, everything. The weather, inconsiderate Bronzes, the mud, the mud--there was plenty here to be angry about!
We're. Almost done, right. Lyf plodded along the trail, not even chancing a look at the lake to check their position. I would really prefer it if we were.
We're... Guarath herself had no such qualms. Her face contorted into a clear look of disgust when she realized where they were, exactly--they were just now getting halfway through. Lovely. Doing well! Almost there.
Another fifteen minutes of this, you think?
Oh, you're--only saying fifteen?
He breathed a long sigh, still staring straight ahead.

That wouldn't do, though! Seeing Hers in such a bad mood made her hearts ache, and Guarath slipped up to press her head into the palm of Lyfrocier's hand. Her eyes were whirling purple as she stared up at him, although her concern tinted the color just enough to be obvious--she knew Lyf wouldn't call her on it, though.
You're doing wonderful, Mine. You really are! Even if we're both--rather dirty right now. In her eagerness to soothe Lyf's frustrations, Guarath didn't bother to focus on who got her message--it was only meant for Hers, of course, but that wouldn't stop everyone else on the track from hearing it, either. And they should! They should know just how wonderful Hers was, even if he wasn't feeling too great at the moment. We're halfway through! It's just a little longer, and then we'll be right back somewhere warm, and then we'll get clean and--and maybe get something to eat. Would some soup help? A bubbly pie? I'll find your favorite, because you deserve it after all this. If anything, she sounded just a touch desperate to be helpful. She was doing her best to be motivational, practically bouncing at his side in an effort to boost his morale even the slightest bit. We'll get whatever you need. But first, we have to finish this race!

Lyf mustered a small smile, gently scritching the base of her headknobs. Whether or not that had actually been private was hardly of his concern at the moment, and it hadn't even occurred to him, either.

The motivation did have its intended effect, however--Guarath certainly noticed as Lyfrocier began picking up the pace, hearts swelling with pride. Good! We'll be there in no time, Mine. Promise. she crooned, giving his leg one last parting headbutt before she stepped aside to afford him enough space to run. Lyfrocier himself was well aware of how ridiculous he looked, but such concerns had fallen by the wayside for the moment. He could be picky about his looks after he took a bath, and after he finished with this sharding race.
As they rounded on to the final stretch, Lyf could make out a little path cutting toward what he suspected might have been the beach--the problem was that he wasn't quite sure where it led, and he hardly wanted to waste any more time out here if he could help it. While it was a tempting option, Lyf paid it no mind, reasoning that the path he knew would be a better choice.

It wouldn't be a long burst of speed, as far as he could figure, but Lyfrocier wanted to rush himself just a bit. Putting some distance between himself and that potential shortcut seemed like an excellent idea as well, simply to quiet the portions of his mind that said it might be viable; more than eager to flush those thoughts away, he broke into a sprint, and Guarath began to lope nearby as well. They were so close now, and he wondered if he could hold this speed out just long enough to get to the finish line--

Her time was now. Guarath knew exactly what to do from the moment Lyf spotted the finish line coming into view--she doubled down on their bond, flooding it with her own personal encouragement. His lungs were burning, but with his Green in his corner, Lyfrocier saw fit to push himself just a bit harder. Every step brought them closer to the finish line, and while he hardly cared about where they placed, he knew that getting in early would do wonders for Guarath's mood. With that in mind, he did his best to move as fast as possible, wishing that he'd actually exercised more before he'd become a Candidate in the first place.

She was watching as closely as she was able to at this speed, although keeping an eye on Hers was a little difficult in-between avoiding the larger puddles--but when Lyfrocier simply went, she bugled her encouragement as loudly as her lungs would allow. Guarath reasoned that she could abandon propriety just this once, throwing herself into a full-on sprint in order to keep pace with Lyf. It was exhilarating, even if the previous stretches of the race had tired her out; for a few blissful seconds, it felt like it was only her and Lyf in the world, and she was positively overjoyed when they crossed the finish line.
Spectacular! Absolutely--positively spectacular! She panted as they slowed to a halt, although not before a small victory lap around where Lyf was standing. You're incredible, did you know that? I was worried after the mud, and--and Demodeth-- But you did it! We did it!

Lyfrocier slowly leaned over, bracing his hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath. There was a faint grin on his face, though, held only for Guarath.
We certainly did. Faranth, he was going to be feeling this tomorrow. He wouldn't be surprised if he had some bruises after being hit like that--but judging by Fahn being carried off, it could have been far worse. I--would love a warm bath right now.
Oh, absolutely! We've more than earned a nice long soak. She creeled, wings spread wide as she slowly pranced to a stop. You especially! I'm so proud of you.

Well, with how their luck seemed to be spanning, this seemed about right. The cold water-mud slurry was absolutely gross, and Niviora spat for a moment before struggling to get up. She was absolutely sore, and what little bit that wasn't wet before was now soaked through.

Sauzath's eyes flickered yellow, worry seeping through as Niviora fell -- the one thing she tried to protect her rider from, but all seemed well.

The beach was so close, so so close to being able to take a breather and maybe assess some of the bruises that they'd collectively gathered. A pale green tail coming out of nowhere had Niviora ducking, staggering a step or two as they were passed by Lyfrocier and Guarath.

On your right, darling. There was no heat to Sauzath's words for her sister, only the tired determination to finish. And at the very least, Guarath hadn't actually hit her rider.

It was a risky gambit -- that was for certain. But how would they get anywhere lagging behind so much? They'd had such a strong start, didn't they deserve to win at least somewhere in the middle? Sauzath was too tired and determined to debate semantics of keeping on the straight and narrow -- and when did Niviora not take a short cut?

Breaking away from the beaten-muddy path, the ground was more sure, and with no reprimand from Orioth or any of their fellow weyrlings, there's a small spark of delight that they'd gotten away with what little they'd gained.
