Only so many people know wherer to get art supplies that are just awesome for american artist. Well, here is a list of some of the things that most people (especially beginners) need to know about:

You can get all of these supplies from one type of brand: Deleter
Which is the main brand that KNOCK (my manga-ka group) uses.
You can see some of my random artwork using these supplies at:
http://www.jonetsuitamashii.deviantart.com

Manga Paper:
For Proffesional/Commercial Publishing use Size B4
For Doujinshi use A4 or B5
For Color Illustrations, Kent Paper seems to be the best

Pen Nibs:
For fine lines: Maru (great for small details such as hands and hair. I use this nib for most of my work, but they are much more expensive)
For even lines: Saji (I use these for illustrations, but you can use these with pressure if you want uneven and smooth lines)
For thick lines: G-Nib (great for action scenes and manga realism)

Pencils:
I use Zebra mechanical pencils, but for large drawings, use standard pencils (maybe F, HB, or 2B)

Ink:
I use Sumi (indian ink) But there is a large variety of inks. For color illustrations, make sure that you use water proof and non-water solluable (if that is spelled right xD)

Screentone:
There is a LARGE amount of different types of tone you can use. But if you want to save your money... use digital tones. I use Deleter ComicWorks. There are also many different brands, but that all comes from experience.

Coloring:
I just started using Prismacolor pencils, but pencils are harder to use than markers. But if you are going to use pencils, make sure that you add LIGHT layers, for that can be a hassle to erase. And blend every now and then. With markers, they are softer, and tend to be expensive, but DON'T get Prismacolor makers. You may be better off with Neopiko or Copic. I am trying to get some Neopiko markers, but McDonalds doesn't pay too much xD;!!

Well, this is just BASIC, so I hope this helps the inspired artist in you!

I guess all that stuff is nice if you have a lot of money. And I feel if you want a lot of stuff.

Paper: I use plan old copy paper and cardstock. I will do my drawing, ink it and then photo copy it on cardstock.

Pens: micron pens 005, 01, 03, 05, mostly 01 and 03

Pencils: paper mate 0.5 and 0.7 mechanical pencil

Coloring: prismacolor pencils and colorless blender pencil. I would like to get copic markers. I do not have the money for alot.

All this stuff but the micron pens and prismacolor pencils you can find any where. The prismacolor pencils and micron pens I get at Aaron brothers.

I also use a crayola light box I find in the toy section. If you would like a light box and do not have the money a clear clipboard works good.

What about biro pens? They usually help when you cant find your inking pen, and also, what about those rulers with the edge part so the ink doesnt run against it? its usually metal, I'm not sure what its called.

Jesus! Really!
I did once a comic with markes, and I really don't recommend that to anyone. if you really want to do comic in colors, please, use computer or watercolors, you just get spent all your moneys for nothing, if you are using lousy markers. :l

I think mechanical pencils are okay. At least you don't have to stop on what you're doing to sharpen a regular pencil.

I live in the Philippines, so I don't know where to buy your supplies from your areas (so sorry... sweatdrop ). But in any case:

For inks: I use different points of pens, like 0.8 for thick lines, 0.5 for the regular ones, and 0.1 for the hair (fine lines). The brands Pilot and Uni are the ones I usually use.

For colors: Watercolor pencils, anyone? Programs: try using Photoshop, but it would work best if you have a graphics tablet.

Paper: anything over 85 gsm.

Pencils:
-sketching=HB,FB
-fine lines=mechanical pencils
-dark/thick lines=8B, 6B
Paper:
For small drawings, I use printer paper (much cheaper).
Sketchbooks are nice to have (I use the thick paper).
Erasers:
Kneaded erasers are great if you don't like eraser shavings (blackens easily)
Ink:
Sumi is really good.
Coloring:
-recommended= Prismacolors
-cheap= Crayola (leaves lines though)
Computer Programs:
I use photoshop.

i just use a normal #2 pencil, india ink, and a dip pen w/ turnip nib. (all from wal-mart!)
PostPosted: Mon Mar 05, 2007 3:07 pm

Well, I'm a starting artist (sorta) and so far I've only used a #2 pencil for my drawings, or anything else lying around that qualifies. xd

I just started using a pen nib and currently with India Ink. I don't know what kind of nib I'm using though. sweatdrop

For paper, I don't need anything...professional. Not yet at least. rolleyes Just my sketchbook.... or my notebook for school. xd I get bored in class sometimes. (But I'm a good student. 3nodding a 90 average. blaugh )

For coloring, I just got into Prismacolors. 3nodding I like them. They're really bold, and don't make any of those lines in the middle Crayolas make. But wow, they're expensive. And, I just found out about Copic so now, I really can't complain about that. xd

I like my Kneaded eraser. ^_^ If I get stuck on something, or can't think of an idea, I just start pulling it apart and stuff. xd (That's okay to do, right? sweatdrop Please tell me someone else does this too! gonk )

Well, that's about all I use. 3nodding But I hate how I have to explain to my parents how I need this and that and they look at me like i'm crazy. xd Yeah, I guess I'm a bit too young for this. (13 yrs old, and proud. blaugh )

I just recently have started using other media besides a regular number 2 pencil lately. Its kinda insane XD But after going to a college summer program, i realize that i've found quite a few things that are fun to meddle with.

I like to shade a lot and its what i primarily do since i'm not very confident in anything else XD For my messy shading i just simply leave it to my number 2, but if i'm seriously shading i turn to graphite and charcol. I really enjoy different graphtie pencils and use a plain, everyday kleenex to shade with. I don't very much like blending sticks...they're just to annoying to me XD However, if there are really small places to be shaded, then i'll break one out. I can't shade with pen to save my life >< I only use them for outline, and i aviod ballpoint. I like the ink pens best ^^ fountain pens are awesome too, but harder to come by for me... sweatdrop

For coloring the old fashioned way, i've found my new passion to be chalk pastels. I absolutely ADORE them. i rarely work with crayons or markers, mainly because i get frustrated and am too afraid that i'll mess up XD colored pencils are my second favorite, and i've yet to try and use oil pastels. biggrin

As far as difital coloring goes, I find it to be quite amazing. I find that poeple can do stunning pieces of work on the computer and i will admit that i'm quite jealous. I DL'd Adobe Photoshop 7 thanks to my uncle, but i'm still in the process of teaching myself how to use it. At this point in time, i still pretty much suck, but i hope that someday i'll be able to color and make things as awesome looking as others. Filters and Lighting effects are also quite enjoyable to play with ^^ Tablets are something that i'm horrible working with, but one day, when i'm in college, maybe i'll be able to get better at those too ^^ YAY! mrgreen

oh..and kneaded erasers are the bomb. Even though i have 3 different kinds of erasers at my disposal XD hehehehehehe rofl

So yeah...just wanted to put in my two cents heart

Oh, if one IS interested in making their own manga, how would they go about doing so??? question

I'm only 14 (and proud of it, yo!), and I don't have a part-time job yet (yay for plans to work at a park district over the summer!), so I can't afford fancy-shmancy stuff like the rest of y'all, so..

I usually just use printer paper (or "multipurpose" paper as it says on the package). Usually I use bic (I think that's what they're called) pens or just number 2 pencils for sketching/drawing. For coloring, I use colored pencils (I can't remember what brand they are, sorry..), and I'm hoping to start using markers soon.

I use the scanners at school for scanning my art in.

Bam, there's the description of things that I use for drawing. I like them, though.
