.:: Rules and Regulations ::. Since the influx of members, this guild has slowly become a new 'Picture Post' forum which it is not meant to be. This forum is supposed to be used by people who want to better themselves in their artwork and want serious critique given. While this is a guild that focuses on anime/manga styled artwork, we welcome all forms and styles of art that our members would want to post.
We, the mods, WILL lock threads and issue warnings to people that do not comply with the requirements of this guild. What's a Warning and what does it mean? An Official Warning is issued to a guild member when he or she fails to follow the rules set forth in this topic and other similar topics in our subforums. A user will receive only ONE warning; if he/she breaks our rules again, the user will be banned from the guild. And don't think we won't know if you've broken the rules before, because we keep a list of the law-breakers in the Moderator Lounge. Dun dun DUN! Getting Banned Too many Official Warnings is usually the cause of a member becoming banned from the guild. However, there are also rare instances where no Official Warnings are issued and the person is immediately banned. This usually happens when a guild member pompously disrespects a Moderator and then continues to do so without remorse. If the Captain gets wind of this and has to step in to protect her Crew, a ban is sure to follow. Please be kind to the Mods. They work hard to keep this guild running. Guild Rules: You may post a Work In Progress to get feedback. Please be sure to mention that you would like help, and maybe which parts you would like advice on specifically. For example, "This is a WIP, and I think the lower body looks funny, but I don't know how to fix it, so I would like some advice. Also, what color scheme do you think would look good?" On a related note, if you want to post artwork that you want to improve on and then post updates of said artwork, any updates and progress scans/screenshots should go into your original post.
Use proper grammar, please. It becomes very difficult to relay suggestions and opinions when people don't communicate in an understandable way. Typos here and there are understandable, but please read over what you submit and make sure its meaning is clear.
Posted artwork must be no larger then 800x800 pixels. If you do not have a way to resize your pictures, you can download a free CG program such as GIMP, Photoshop Elements, or Irfanview (this last program seems to be a much smaller and focuses specifically on optimizing photos/pictures for viewing purposes). If you can't figure out how to resize the pictures using your program of choice, it is usually very simple to find the answer by searching on Google.com.
Artwork MUST be your own work and we do not accept tracing or copying. Copying is the act of looking at a picture and trying to draw what you see. Don't try to pass a copied picture off as an original drawing. It's easy to tell, and it will give you a bad reputation as an artist, not to mention getting you banned from the guild, as will any other form of art theft. Art theft will result in instant banning.
Example
This image was not traced, (notice how the hair and the fingers are different) but the artist DID look at the original image and redraw whet they saw. This is copying and is not allowed, even as Fanart. (How are people supposed to critique your art if it's not something that came from your own head?) These rules are the same as on the rest of Gaia. Do not post responses such as "Kewl!" and "I love your art!" You will be warned for spamming in a topic. If you are commenting in a thread and you really want to tell the artist that you think their artwork is "Kewl!" then you need to explain WHY you think that it is good, so that the artist can use your comment to learn and improve.
Do NOT title your thread "Critique Me!" or "What do you think?". We want to know what's in it. Is it a WIP (Work In Progress)? Is it something else? When thinking of a title be creative. It's already understood that you're wanting feedback and critique (plus you'll no doubt mention what you want and what you tried to do in your post), so be creative and maybe post a title for your drawing. Just something, anything, to make your topic unique from everybody else's so that people don't have to think, "hey is that the 'critique my drawing' topic that I looked at earlier, or is it that one?" If the title tells us what's in the topic, we're more likely to become interested and click it. Make sense?
ANY threads that are just to show off your art or have it rated WILL be locked or deleted, and the member who posted it will be Warned for spamming. Those can be put in the Picture Post forum, which can be found in the main Gaia forum directory. This guild exists for learning/teaching purposes, so the threads you make should be focused on things like asking for critique or advice, discussing problems and techniques, etc. On that note, ONLY threads created for critiquing purposes are allowed in the Main Forum.
Do not post topics asking how to do something vague like drawing hair. We have a Tutorials subforum with many very helpful tutorials and tutorial directories which will teach you how to do things. If you can't find a tutorial that you want, post in the Requests topic.
Do not post your fanart in the main forum. There is a specific subforum just for that now so please use it.
DO NOT BUMP. We can't stress that enough. If you're thread has fallen off the first page and you still haven't had any good feedback then you may bump with good reason. But other people want to get feedback too on their art and it's not fair to other artists that they're artwork is being pushed down off the front page just so that you can bump because you haven't had a response in the last 5 minutes. Sometimes it will take hours to get a response in this guild because many of us write long responses and do redlines (please see the next post for our rules on redlines). That takes time and thus you must be patient.
Do NOT troll an image. Trolling is any action meant only to bother/provoke/fight with the thread-starter or other posters. Depending on the situation, this can be an automatic ban from the guild.
If you see someone trolling/flaming then PM a guild moderator and we'll take care of it. Do NOT provoke them; in fact, it is best not to interact with them at all, else you may inadvertently get yourself in trouble too.

.:: Critique: A How-To Guide ::. Critique. That one thing that we all (or most of us) came to this guild for. Whether you are the one who gives critique or the one who asks for it, there are certain things you should be aware of!Giving CritiqueGood > Bad: Yes, there are flaws. But even if the artist requests harsh critique, they still want to be complimented in some way. Remember that with the flaws, there are good points. Try to point out the good points before you point out the bad things. That means that you should try to build people up before tearing them down. If you give critique that points out only the flaws, the artist will feel very discouraged.
Examples Good: "I love how you drew the hair! It is very fluid and free. I also love how you drew the pose, it is very expressive. A couple of things you might want to work on are the feet and hands. I think that they look a little stiff and awkward. I think that the color is awesome though, great job!" (Notice how this critique starts with some good points, then goes on to end on a good note, too! This is a good format to go by: posetive, negative, posetive.)
Bad: "The ears are crooked, she's crosseyed, the feet are weird, the hair is too strandy, it's too light, the clothing is stiff, she's standing weird, and those shoes look fake. Other than that, I don't see anything wrong. C:"
Don't be too vague: Even if you don't know how to explain what's wrong, at least tell the artist what you think is wrong. Just saying, "those hands look funny" doesn't help with anything. Remember to say what you think makes them look awkward. You probably don't want to be left confused; the artist that you're critiquing does not want to be either.
Flaming is NOT critique: Saying bad things about someone's artwork WILL NOT be tolerated in this guild. If any individual is seem putting someone down due to flaming, they WILL receive a warning and possibly a ban if they've done it numerous times. Recieving CritiqueNow, what about getting critiqued? There are a few things to keep in mind here as well.If you don't want advice, don't post your art. Not everyone is going to 'ooh' and 'aww' and 'omg kawaii desuu~`!1' over your art. There is always going to be something that could be changed or altered to improve it. So, accept critiques (even harsh ones) gracefully. None of this 'omg ur so mean crying ' just because someone thinks your cat girl's ears could be a little less lopsided. This is a place to learn and improve your skills smile
'I meant to do it that way/I like it that way' The person giving you critique is there to suggest how you can do something BETTER. Sure, maybe you meant to give your character a malformed head, but in the other person's eyes this doesn't seem all too...appealing. Remember, a big part of art is going to be the people viewing it, and their opinions.
'Gee golly, thanks for your help smile ' Noone likes to post a good critique, and have it ignored. If someone helped you, go ahead and thank them. Maybe you even have another concern they can help you with. This doesn't mean you have to listen to what everyone says, if someone gives you advice that is...not so great...just give them a 'thanks for your opinion ^_^;' OR SOMETHIN LIKE THAT. .:: CONCERNING REDLINES ::. What's a redline?? A redline is when another user takes your drawing, and sketches a red (or some other color) line over your original lines to illustrate how to change something, usually a part of the anatomy. Not everyone can or SHOULD do a redline. Please, please, PLEASE! If you have never studied anatomy, or are just a beginner at drawing, DO NOT give someone an anatomical redline! It will only confuse them, and quite frankly, looks really bad. The same goes for all redlines. If you don't have a good grasp of what you're trying to draw for them, just USE WORDS. It is a huge pet peeve of Groovy Spleen's to see a badly done redline. In fact, it will make her want to club a baby seal. O_O So, for the love of all that's cute and fluffy, don't do it if you're not skilled enough!
Try to keep the original artist in mind! Don't completely change the picture, or redraw the picture! Sure, suggest a better pose, illustrate your point...but keep to the artists original idea as much as possible.

.:: How to Get Help in This Guild ::. There are a lot of people in this guild who came here because they need help drawing, and a lot less who came here to teach drawing. For this reason, making threads like "teach me how to draw!" or "I need a tutor!" probably won't get you very far, because most of the people who would be able to teach you just don't have the time.
To get help quickly, there are a few things you can do:
First of all, you can take things into your own hands and go to the tutorial subforum and look through the tutorials, because there are a lot of useful ones made by people right here in this guild. And because they were made by guild admins/members, you can ask questions right in the tutorial thread, and the maker of the tutorial will probably answer them for you.
Second, you can post your artwork in the main forum and ask people to critique it. This is a very good way to get help, because people can see your art, and so they will be able to tell you exactly what looks good about it, and what you need to work on, and give you very specific suggestions.
Third, you can ask specific questions about art. But they have to be really specific! "How should I draw hair?" is much too broad a question, because there are thousands of ways to draw hair, even in the anime/manga style alone! "Whenever I draw long hair it always looks stiff and messy, but I want it to look soft and flowing, what's a good way to do that?" is a much better question, because you've explained what looks bad, and what you'd rather have it look like, so the people who read your post will have a much better idea of what to tell you.
And of course, be sure to check to stickies, FAQs, and browse through the other threads to see if your question has already been answered! There a lot of people asking questions in this guild, so it's very possible you will find the answer this way!
We should also add that we don't tolerate people how constantly look down on their artwork. Saying "Lawls! My art sucks so whatever." is not going to get you any help in this guild. Most of us will ignore threads where the artist is bashing their own work constantly.

.:: Frequently Asked Questions ::. If you have any questions about the rules, then feel free to post them in this topic! How do you scan an image and put it on your computer? Use a scanner and the software that comes with it.
If you draw someone else's character, is that considered fanart? It's only fanart if it's a show/comic book character. Like.. if you draw Noraboo's OC then it's a commish/freebie of her character. If you draw Naruto then it's fanart.
Is it okay for me to model characters after someone/another character? Or would that be categorized under the "copying/tracing" rule? It depends on what you mean by modelling. If you've designed a character that looks just like Naruto but with longer black hair then that's not very good. But if you draw a character that's a ninja of your own designed based on the look of the 'Naruto' world then that's perfectly fine.
How do you post a picture? First, you save it to your computer and whatnot. Next, you go to an uploading site. Photobucket works pretty well. Once it's uploaded, just copy and paste the URL into your post, and you're set. Just the URL alone will make it a link, if you want the picture there you need to put in the IMG code.
I have no idea if this has been asked already but: is it okay if you change one thing in an existing picture but then copy the rest as it was? No it's not. Unless you explicitly say that you referenced a certain image as long as you give credit to the original artist. If it's almost exact then it's still copying.
How do you red line things? Take it into Photoshop or some other CG program, and do the redline on a layer above the original. :3 Or even just take it into MSpaint and use the pencil tool.
What are some examples of titles that we can use for our threads if we are just seeking advice? Be creative. It's more or less understood that you're wanting feedback and critique (plus you'll no doubt mention what you want and what you tried to do in your post), so be creative and maybe just post a title for your drawing. Just something to make your topic unique from everybody else's so that people don't have to think, "hey is that the 'critique my drawing' topic that I posted in earlier, or is that the one?" Make sense?
If our image is over the size of 800x800 pixles, can we leave a link to the picture instead of posting the picture itself? Yes, please. Or resize the image. Whichever you prefer.
Can I open a thread asking people's opinions on different art supplies or art editing programs and the like? Try our new Q&A subforum
Can you use line paper for the WIP ? Yes and no. You shouldn't use lined paper for art you intend to ask for critique on because notebook paper is usually only any good for doodles, first stage roughs, establishing thumbnail compositions, and that sort of thing. It's too thin to hold any kind of decent colour and smudges/tears/gets very damaged/etc too easily. You're free to use whatever you like for works in progress and roughs, but here we do expect you to be serious enough about the art you're asking for C&C on that you've taken the time to not do it on lined paper or to have transfered it onto better paper.
Are you allowed to post anything other then anime? Of course you can. We accept all kinds of artwork here even if it isn't anime.
Where do I post requests for help when I don't have an image to back it up? (ie. "Can I have help drawing hands?") In the subforum for tutorials there is a sticky that is meant for Tutorial Requests. Without an image to go off of, the best help you can aspect to get from this guild would be from the tutorials. Any requests for tutorials in the main forum will be locked and more then likely will result in a warning.
