In English folklore, Herne the Hunter is a ghost associated with Windsor Forest and Great Park in the English county of Berkshire. He has antlers upon his head.
He hadn’t meant to be this way. As a child, a young naive foal, he’d thought himself just like the rest of his family, helpful, honourable, chivalrous, a true seelie. There had always been signs, of course, he was far more ruthless and mischievous than the other foals and he never seemed to be able to put thought into his actions, always acting instead on pure instinct and passion. Those things alone were not undeniable proof of his true nature though. And while much more damming, not even his foal coat changing to dark could even be considered real evidence. No, that came much later, and it would be something that could not be denied.
The urges started around the time his coat change began to occur. As his physical self became more dark, so did his inner self, it seemed. He fought it, denied it, but even as he did, his tricks became more malicious, more cruel, until finally they resulted in the death of a fellow foal. Even then that hadn’t been the outcome he’d been plotting for, and even that could have been explained away as an accident with the cries of his parents proclaiming his innocence. It was only what he did next that cemented his guilt and dishonoured him. The blood of the innocent foal began to flow and spread around it’s prone body, mesmerizing him until he gave into the dark whispers that had been filling his head for months now and he bathed himself in the sticky river of beautiful, scarlet blood. It stained his mane, and with it, his soul; a blemish that would never wash out. His true nature had arisen and could never be erased.
It had been many years since he had given much thought to the past. Once he had embraced his true self and become who he was meant to be, he hadn’t seen much point to dwell on such things. He’d left the Seelie Court a dishonoured prince and found that was how he liked it. It was only now, seeing this carousel before him that made him think back to how things had been once. Had there been some way to avoid his fate? Had he simply not tried hard enough? Not that such questions and thoughts mattered. After all, there was no way to return to what had been now.
Or… was there? The carousel seemed to have other ideas. Much different ideas. And after all, if there was one thing for certain in this life, it was that change is good, and nothing is for certain.
