Most movies do that now. At least they have about a 5-month between theater and DVD release. I've seen some movies come out like a month and 1/2 after being in theaters.
I think "From Justin to Kelly" holds the record for the shortest theatre to DVD release. It was released on DVD something like 2 weeks after it was in theatres. Can you say "epic fail"?
That being said, I think the reason as to why The Dark Knight is being released in December is that it wants to pull a Moulin Rouge and try and gain some Oscar nods. But, if it fares as well as Moulin Rouge (read: gets zero awards), something is seriously wrong with the Academy.
Actually, the Academy would be stupid not to nominate the The Dark Knight for a ton of awards. Their ratings suck, so some summer blockbuster fare might just boost them.
