Well, the first two were good. Then it got popular. Ugh.

Honestly I only liked the first book, to me it seemed like the series just went wandering in the forest and never returned.

I love them still, and I'm eighteen now. XD
I have the first three in hardcover, then the second two in paperback (since I no longer have that kind of disposable income, haha) and I'm impatiently waiting for 'Fang' in paperback.
I liked the first 'series' (I guess) better than I'm liking the second, but it's a quick read, it sucks me in, and I don't have to do much thinking. Plus, it leaves a really good message for younger kids who might read it, I think (I started reading them in middle school!)
I just read Max toward the middle of July, and I have no effing clue wtf those mutated whale-ish things were supposed to be like wtf. I think Patterson overstepped his creative boundaries then. XD Bird-kids, I can buy. Toxic-slime-exuding sea monsters... yeah, no. The ending felt rushed... I didn't like the whale thingers at ALL. xP It's taken a huge step away from the original series, but ehh, it's not as bad as some stuff I've read.
I read the first manga, too, but I was disappointed with how much slower it was moving than the actual books. XD I don't have the money to buy the whole series of manga if it's going to take that long. XP
