I think the difference is that muffins are like bread. For example, rather than making a loaf of pumpkin bread, pour the batter into little pans to get muffins. Cupcakes are literally cake, like red velvet or whatever. That's just what I think though, I can't really find a good definition that makes them different. Anyway, I just like bread/cake shaped like a cup, so I don't have to involve knives!
Yeah. Although some sweet breads are only a little less crumbly than cake.... and muffins can be savory as well as sweet.
