In your opinion who's a better detective? L or Near?
I know that Near was able to find out that Light was Kira but he had help from Mello. In the last episode Near said that him and Mello together are better than L. But if Near didn't get help from Mello and if L was still alive then who do you think would've found out first that Light was the real Kira?

Megumi 4 near aka nate river he is the one who found out who was kira Incorrect. Together, Mello and Near possess superior deductive abilities to L. But alone, neither one of them can match him.

Definatly L. Yeah sure Near got Kira in the end but L's findings gave him insight, and Near got Mello's help. L always seemed to know it was Light, but no one believed him. I was so sad when he died...

Also, L got to where he was but working. Near inherited it...
I think that makes some difference...

Near had some pretty amazing insights and assumptions, though I think most of it was just because explaining his thought process or giving him reason to believe it would be time-consuming. But, as previously stated, most of what Near found out, and really what made him start focusing on Light, was all due to L. That and at the end of the manga Near himself admits alone he is not as good, but together with Mello they are superior. However, you do have to take into account how young he is compared to L. At his age, I am sure he is smarter than L was. He claims with Mello he is superior...well all Mello did was help reveal that Mikami was using a fake deathnote the whole time. I think if he had as much experience and age as L, Near would have figured that out or done better in that situation by himself.

Near or Mello can't be better than L working alone, unless if they work together, which they did in the end, and caught Kira. But if your asking Near or L, then L, because if Near works alone, he can't beat L. Mello is too emotional and Near isn't emotional enough.

L of course, as i recall L at some point had one then eventually all (up until he died that is) Kiras in custody and would have charged them if he had sufficient evidence, but as Light Cheated because he was not and never will be man enough to kill a guy with his hands thus leaving no evidence, i mean he didnt even kill L himself, he wussed out and got a shinigami to do it for him -.-
near on the other hand caught two, takaeda doesnt count as she died, and i dont think mello counts as he didnt kill any criminals except his own gang members
so total tally is
L = 3
N = 2
Verdict = L wins
