Peering over the grounds keeping invoices, Hellma bit out a soft snarl. "'Decorative Statuary'?! That damned secretary..."

Slamming her hand on the skellyphone, she began to yell at the little frost demon. "...students are not statuary! Well yes, highly atmospheric...true...garden gnome?! I have no care for your silly nonsense! Stay away from the paperwork you imbecile, you!. ...Bah!"

The professor hung up, and turned back to the application, only to find her desk empty. "What....you!"

The only reply she received was a rather gravelly belch from the Acceptance Bin.

Name: Igneous
Nicknames: Iggy
Gender: female
Age: she appears to be a young adult, it is assumed that now that she is living she will age but no one really knows

Faction/Race monster/gargoyle

Personality: Igneous isn't your "rawwr I'm gonna eatchu" type of monster. She is more of a "what in the world are you and what makes you tick?" type.

Igneous is a fairly outgoing girl - her curiosity naturally leads her in that direction. She does get a little upset when others talk about their families & growing up since she never had anything like that.

Being formerly solid stone, she is slow to anger or any other strong emotion. Some people see this as her being cold & unfeeling, though that is not quite the case. She just has to take the time for things to be thought through. Once she gives makes up her mind about something she stays with her decision - it takes a lot to get her to change her mind. This could be seen as a bit of a rather stubborn streak by those who have come up against it.

Igneous has a very dry sense of humor. When she lived with the gnome in the cemetery they both would have fun with unwary visitors by having her stand still until someone would walk by. It was a good way to get flowers to decorate the house with after all!

Iggy is very deliberate in her actions and words. All of living is still relatively new to her and she is trying to find where she is going to fit into the world. She isn't dimwitted, but it does take her a bit to figure out things sometime - after all her brains (if there are any) are still semi-stone! She has trouble with accidentally hurting/destroying things as well. The cemetery caretaker had to replace quite a number of chairs and visit the healers a number of times after he "adopted" her. She is getting better about gauging her strength but still has a ways to go before she has it mastered.

Why the Academy?: Igneous has very little experience with the world of the living (or the undead, for the matter). What better place to learn about how to be more than a lupmp of rock than a school!

Fear: What loves statues? Birds of course! That hasn't changed since Igneous came to life. She usually has one pigeon following her around and her power at this time allows her to summon a few more of them to assist her. As she learns more perhaps she can gain the trust of more and some stronger birds! Of course, many creatures do find birds a tasty treat - and pigeons are rather, well, flighty!
When Iggy first uses her ability the birds won't be of much use. They will be able to fly around and flap at the opponent and maybe n**, but won't do much damage. They will probably scare easy and just annoy the person she is battling.
As she gets stronger, so will her birds. Eventually she will get to summon other birds associated with death (ravens, vultures, etc)

Natural Ability:
Immobile: A throwback to her statue days - Iggy can stay in the same position for hours with out moving
Strength of Mountains - being partially stone, Igneous is stronger than her size would lead you to think

Physical Description:
Eye Colour: blue
Hair Colour/Style:shoulder length in deep gray with mossy green bits
Skin Colour: mottled gray with darker gray "weathered" areas (she is living semi-stone)
Size: Igneous is a large gal. She is around 5'8'' in height with a tip to tip wing span of around the same when they are fully outstretched (which rarely occurs) Being made originally of granite, her weight is surprising. She is denser than her size would lead you to think and weighs more than a flesh being of the same size.
Clothing Style/Colours: she favors "flowy" clothing in lots of colors - she seldom wears gray or black since she hates being monotone! As she doesn't like being bound in any way, super tight clothing is not something she would wear!

Other: Iggy is no longer made of solid stone, but slightly softer version - sorta a stone/flesh mix. As a result, her skin & bones are harder than what is considered normal. She can take a lot more damage than a purely flesh being would be able to. She does feel pain but in sort of a "deadened" sense - she could really be hurt severely and not realize just how bad.
She does eat regular food but requires a lot of basic minerals to maintain her health. She can occasionally be seen sucking on a piece of limestone!
Her biggest fear is standing water in any form. Rain she is ok with but keep her away from puddles! Anything deeper than a shimmer on the ground makes her wary - and the thought of deep water gives her nightmares. Don't even mention swimming class!
She hates her wings - if there was a way to remove them she would! They are useless things to her and she represent a freedom (flight) she will never have. She envies those who can fly and to some extent even envies her ever present pigeon for the freedom he has that she lacks.
Iggy is also afraid that whatever it is that brought her to life will one day take that life away from her again.

“I wish you were here.”

The words echoed through the mist, wrapping themselves around the tombstones dotting the grounds and writhing along the dew dampened ground like eels of sound.

“I wish you were here.”

Once more they came through the twilight to break the silence that normally shrouded the cemetery in its sleeping peace.

“I wish you were here.”

A final time; that magical, binding third time needed for any spell – or curse.

And with that third her eyes opened. Her first sight was a cowled form slowly moving away from her in the growing night even as her hand reached out to it – her first movement of life unseen by the very one who had brought her that gift.

****

Pickfoot made his final round of the cemetery for the night, humming the newest song from The Ungrateful Dead as he did. His walking staff made a counterpoint to the music and he let his mind wander a bit to the ghoulash he had simmering on the stove for his supper. That’s not to say he didn’t take his job as a cemetery caretaker gnome seriously – because he did, by Jack! True death didn’t come all that often to the residents of Halloweentown but those that did die deserved to rest in whatever peace they could find. Other than the gardening all he really had to watch for was the occasional monster who thought that the recently (or not so recently) departed would be good snacks – a call for the Bogeymen took care of them – and the dead who decided to go walkies and not stay properly buried – which was easy taken care of by the agents for the Undead Services who helped them begin their undead lives. All in all, the solitary life of a cemetery gnome suited Pickfoot just fine.

As he approached the furthest area he realized something was amiss. What was it? The ground was smooth – no newly risen here, trees were all in place, tombstones were where they belonged, statue was sitting on its pedestal as always, no sounds of chewing – wait… statue SITTING? That was a standing statue – had been for centuries! Some sort of mythical human watcher of the dead if he remembered right. What in the name of Skellington’s boots was going on here? Grasping his stick a little tighter he approached the statue. To his surprise it looked up at him with a bewildered gaze when he got near.

“Who are you? Who am I? What am I?” The questions and her voice – for the tones were female though they were rough stopped him in his tracks. There was intelligence there and not just some unthinking pile of stone. The lost look she gave him settled his next action as much as his own innate curiosity to find out what had happened here tonight.

“Me, I’m Pickfoot, caretaker here. As for you, well, let’s figure that out inside where there’s a bit more light and I can sit to think,” he held out his hand to her in invitation. His instincts had yet to fail to warn him of danger and tonight they were quiet. Whatever she was, he felt safe offering her the sanctuary of his cottage.

The statue ignored his hand and stood with a shower of pebbles and other debris cascading off of her. Pickfoot turned to lead the way only to whirl around again as the ground shook with a WHUMP behind him. The statue was on her hands and knees. Walking, it seemed, was not something that she knew how to do.

“Here, lass, let me help,” Pickfoot attempted to help her to her feet. “Well, you are a sturdy one!” he grunted as she once more stood upright. “Slow and steady now, one foot then the other and use those wings to help yourself balance!”

****
And so it began. For two years Igneous, for that is the name Pickfoot gave his charge, lived with the gnome. She learned the basics of living – that anything can be eaten but strong flavors are best, that wings are usually in the way when you can’t use them to fly; water is good when it is rain but bad when it is deep; pigeons still love you when you are a statue that moves around; chairs (and gnomes) are a lot more fragile than they look. What he couldn’t teach her was how to find her own way in the world – for that she would have to go to the Academy. Fortunately, Pickfoot knew a gnome or three there, and thus Igneous found herself a new enrollee at that illustrious school.

Roch was a gift from the gnome Pickfoot when she left for the Academy. Squeakers adopted Iggy and Chip when they moved into his room in the dorm!

Like the pigeons, the crows seem to like hanging around Iggy for some reason...

Track! Igneous can't run, but she can throw things! Sometimes they even land where they are suppose to!
