This hasn't happened recently, but it's always bugged me.

Sometimes, when I am sleeping, I know I'm sleeping. But I can't open my eyes. And then, I feel like someone is strangling me, or pulling my shoulders back to the point it feels like it will snap off. My heartbeat quickens, and my breathing gets kind of off. But all this time, I know I'm asleep.

And then, when it feels like I can't take it anymore, I can suddenly open my eyes/wake up.

Can someone perhaps identify what this is?
This hasn't happened in over a year now, but I've always been curious as to what was happening.
Thank you~

I'm not sure what it's called, but I've experienced it too. Basically, you are asleep, but your mind/body is still aware of its surroundings and what happens to it. You're probably having a nightmare of whatever's happening - choking and such - and you can feel it. The heart beat is raised because of flight or fight.
There's a similar phenomenon called sleep paralysis; this is pretty much the same, only instead of being aware of touch, you're unable to move. It's pretty scary from what I've heard.

For me, I was being tapped or shaken, like what my mom used to do to wake me up. I was probably dreaming of her, as this happened after she died. Another was with me getting the feeling of floating, and I'd snap awake immediately, and then my legs would fall down. It was really weird. eek

I see! Thank you for clarifying this for me. *A*
It's nice to know I'm not the only one who experiences this. I think I've also experienced sleep paralysis before, except it's iffy. .__.'' I need to google these things, now that I know what it's called!

I'm sorry about your mom. /Hugs/

I know what you're talking about with the floating. I've felt that too. It's kind of scary sometimes, because it feels like you really are falling. Dx

I Googled it and most of the results I got were for sleep paralysis. They did mention "deep sleep awareness," so I think that's your best shot. If it's causing you to lose sleep, I'd seek a neurologist.

Thanks. It was pretty shocking (she died last December x_x) but I'm doing a lot better.
And I honestly didn't find the floating scary. I don't have a problem with a feeling of rising at all. I have had a dream where my dog pulled me off a cliff and got a falling sensation; that was terrifying. gonk

You have a common case of Sleeping Paralysis. Many people have it. It is caused by a narcoleptic hormone in your brain stying triggered when you are not fully awake, yet. It is not harmful to you in anyway and generally you are able to think. It is very common to hallucinate or feel panicked while you have an "episode". To help yourself have fewer instances: DO NOT NAP DURING THE DAY. If you are sleepy do something to wake yourself up! You need to set your internal alarm, so go to bed and get up at the same time every day!!! Don't eat 3 hours before bed and try to avoid electronics 30 minutes or more before bed (e.g. t.v., texting/phone, computer).

I myself experience sleeping paralysis regularly and no longer have hallucinations. "Attacks" only last about 30 seconds (they seem WAAAY longer) and all you need to do is breathe, and concentrate on moving an arm enough to twitch your body awake. smile

Hope that helps!!!
