A couple of weeks ago, the kitten got malcolm just inside his ear. It's been going through several stages of irritation since then, usually when he scratches it and it starts bleeding, prompting him to scratch more.

I was wondering if there was anything I could do to keep the irritation down so he doesn't need to scratch it so much? I've already trimmed his nails, but they might need another trim by now. Seems like getting one of those elizabethan collars is probably my best bet, but I wanted to see if anyone else had ideas. Thoughts?

I think the best bet would be one of those Elizabethan collars as well. There's pretty much no other way to guarantee he'll leave it alone. I also suggest you try to keep it as clean as possible to reduce the chance it'll get infected too, which will be easier once he has an Elizabethan collar on.

Keep the wound clean, and I agree about the collar.

Thank you. smile After I posted this I went and cleaned his ear. Poor guy hated it, but he settled down for it because he figured mom knows best.

I talked to my boyfriend about getting one this morning. He thinks it would be a waste of money because he'll figure out how to get it off. I disagree on both counts, but I'll just have to keep trying to convince him. I mean, it's useful to have one around anyways, just in case.

He won't be able to get it off, the latches are much to strong for a cat to be able to remove no matter how hard he tries. The only way he'd be able to get it off is if it's not put on tight enough to where he could slip it over his head. Hopefully you'll be able to convince your boyfriend, or you may not be able to guarantee he'll leave it alone, which in turn will mean that it could get infected and/or never heal. You could try explaining that to him when trying to convince him. smile All our cats had them when they were fixed so they wouldn't lick the wounds, they were never able to remove them on their own.

you could try one of the wound numbing agents. My dog had a spray with a medication that numbed the area for a bit, [He had allergies and would chew incessantly] they make it in ointment form too, available at a lot of pet stores.

In a somewhat unexpected turn of events, I am pretty dang sure I have a job now, pending the drug test. xd Slightly paranoid about it, because my boyfriend's mother has a medical marijuana card and pretty much friggin' hotboxed the house. rolleyes However, the last time I was even in that house was 3 weeks ago and I don't even remember the last time I smelled it, so I'm sure it will be fine. But I swear, if I failed and lost the only hint of a job I've gotten in seven months because someone with no respect for anyone else refused to go outside to smoke it or at least open a window, I will be pissed like I've never been pissed before.

But anyways, that means that I don't have to convince him anymore. Right after I told him about what happened, I said, "So, I'm just buying the collar myself. No more discussion."

He's going to let me use his money to buy it for now, because I won't hear back about orientation until Monday, and who knows when I'll start working and receive my first paycheck.

Also, he's betting me $50 that the collar won't work. Which is good for me, 'cause I'm pretty sure it will, and I owe him $50. We couldn't find the remote, and after looking (what I thought was) thoroughly on my side of the bed for it and he wanted to look, I said, "If you can find the remote on my side of the bed, I'll give you 50 bucks." lol
