When I first went to this dentist, I was swooned by his charm. He's a non-invasive dentist so his methods are "gentle-er" then regular dentistry and he has a very comfortable office, personality, and excellent staff.
The only problem is this dude is old and very unwilling to admit when he's wrong or has made a mistake.
Ever watch the TV show Scrubs? Were you sad when Bob Kelso was forced into retirement? I wasn't! From doctors to dentists, the only times I have ever experienced malpractice was from elder (Over 55) "professionals". The supposed "masters" with a life-time of experience.
The absolute worst incidents (among many minor ones) so far have been a doctor prescribing me Amoxicillin when I'm allergic to Penicillin resulting in a trip to the ER and my wisdom teeth being left unattended until they shattered with decay and caused cavities and an almost root canal in their neighboring teeth. Most recently my tongue was added to this list.
I went to the dentist yesterday for what was supposed to be my last cleaning and filling before getting braces to fix teeth made crooked by the wisdom teeth.
Now like I said before, his methods are great but he himself is old. I don't know if he just couldn't see well or if maybe his hands shook (what I'm betting on) but at sometime while he was drilling around, he sliced into the underside of my tongue with the drill. At the time, I didn't feel anything because of the local anesthetic he injected and he just kept talking sweet talk saying everything looked beautiful and when he finished he told me: "You may be a little sore there because you bit down a little." I didn't understand what he meant at first and thought he was talking about the usual soreness I get after dental work which is mostly irritation from where the needle stuck me. I looked in the mirror and noticed my cheek was nicked and the side of my tongue white but it's not unusual to get nicked like that and has happened before so I thought nothing of it and didn't check under my tongue because I had no reason to.
When I got home, I fell asleep and woke up three hours later in severe pain! The numbing medicine had fully worn off and I felt like a hot iron was being forced under my tongue with the pain radiating behind my eye, through my ear, and down my throat! I checked in the mirror and noticed under my tongue was a giant gash/abrasion almost one inch long, almost a centimeter wide in the middle, and pretty deep with the surrounding area a dark purple/red color! I immediately went to my mother and showed her so she could talk to the dentist for me since it hurt to do more than grunt. She called him and his exact words were: "Oh she bit the handle of the drill, didn't she tell you? It's no big deal." and then he hung up without any advice on how to care for it or anything! ******** I did not bite down at all or even tense my jaw while the drill was in my mouth! Having been nicked before, I'm not that ******** stupid and what was under my tongue was far too big to be an accidental slip of the drill! My mother and I went straight to the walk-in clinic which was fortunately still open and even the doctor and nurses there couldn't believe how big it was! The doctor said she wanted to put a couple stitches in the middle but because of how jagged it was she couldn't. Her exact words: "It's shredded" .
She prescribed an antibiotic and what she calls "magic mouthwash" (Lidocain, Maalox, and Benadryl) to sooth and coat the sore so I can eat, and recommended Tylenol for the pain and salt-water to keep it clean.
It was too late to go to the pharmacy after I left so I couldn't get anything and it hurt way too much to eat or even swallow so I forced a protein shake down, then some Tylenol, swished with salt water, and coated the sore with raw honey.
I looks much better today but I still can't talk, chew, or swallow without pain. I'm never going to that ******** dentist ever again!

Goodness are you alright? I hope you start feeling better soon.
You know you could probably sue that dentist. Hell I would, or at least report it.

I can't really do anything because it's my word against his and he claims I bit down on the drill and caused it to slide into my tongue and that's what really pisses me off, the way he denied responsibility and put the blame on me. If he had just explained what happened and asked for forgiveness instead of letting me find out on my own the (painfully) hard way and say it was my own fault, I'd probably forgive him and move on. At this point, I wouldn't put it past him to have the dental assistant and his colleague side with his story to avoid a malpractice suit.
My mother already called our insurance for me and I am transferring to a new dentist. As good as he was, he has lost me as a customer forever and I will tell anyone who listens, what he did.
My tongue is a lot better btw. The hole closed up a lot and now it's roughly 2/3 the size it started out as. It still hurts a lot to eat and talking takes a lot of effort but that magic mouthwash the doctor gave me is truly magical! The only problem is, I think the underside of my tongue is absorbing the Benadryl because I keep falling asleep soon afterwards.

I'm happy to hear that it is healing, it is quite possible that the Benadryl is working into your bloodstream and making you sleepy. But if it keeps you out of pain then keep using it!
I'm sorry that you cant sue him, but hey at least you are getting a new dentist. ^^ Good luck!
