Everyone else seems to be posting about these jobs they're interviewing for and then getting them, so I'm hoping it's a good luck charm to post about it here? =D

I currently work at a boarding kennel full time, for... not so great of pay, about $8.70/hr. That's after a .30 raise I got after three months or so. I love my job sometimes, but it's really stressing me out, especially when I'm struggling day-to-day with bills, not having enough time to spend with my needy dog, and being the only full time tech. We had a Bordatella outbreak a couple weeks ago but have it contained; however, the massive amount of daily bleaching and precautions is starting to wear me thin, especially when I'm the only one working both kennel buildings. Really, though, the two major issues is money and time.

So I am applying to the University in my area for clerical work, and even have a high chance of getting hired as a Secretary in the unit I used to work in as a student worker, so long as I pass the civil service test with a high enough score to be placed. I've been keeping in contact with my old boss (who was promoted from that position, which is why it's vacant) and they've been trying to pull some strings to get me into the position. Long story short, I've taken 5 tests now and I'm finally done with the tests I need to be placed. Got the score back for my first test: 100! Things are definitely looking up.

However! While I was at the testing place Monday I saw a new job posting in the office. A Natural Science Lab Assistant III for the Zoology Department! My degree is zoology! The position pays $14.35/hr, almost $4 more than the Secretary position I'm hoping for! The employment counselor I talked to was very excited about my qualifications and signed me up to take the test for the lab assistant. I take it tomorrow morning, but I'm not sure how long it will take before I know if I placed. I'm just really, really crossing my fingers that I get the job, since it's in my field and it's almost twice what I make now!

Although I'm kinda stuck now... the other office is trying to pull strings to get me in, but if I get this lab job I'll feel terrible, though I know they'll understand. But I don't want to make them wait any longer for me, but then I'll have passed up my opportunity for that position if I don't get the lab asst. job. ARGH! C'est la vie.

So keep your fingers crossed for me, it will totally make my year if I get it. >w<

Because they're pulling strings for you, and you want to stay on friendly terms with them, I'd let them know that you've also applied for the lab job, just so they don't find out through the grapevine and all.

It sounds like you're sure to get the secretary position, at least, but best of luck with both opportunities.

Bad news.

I decided to ask if they had hired anyone at the office yet since it was taking me so long to take the tests.

"yes her name is vicki she's nice (-: " was the response I got. God damnit.

The lab assistant "test" I had to take was nothing more than 10 pages of me filling out my experience through work or education, on various lab practices, most of which I've only had experience through my Chemistry/physics/biology classes.

They didn't even want me to list my natural science experience through volunteering. They only wanted PAID jobs. I've worked my a** off at a wildlife rehab doing all kinds of scientific tests and some lab stuff for three YEARS and I couldn't even put it anywhere on the packet. I really think I'm effing screwed. I'm hoping that maybe I'll be the only one that applied and they'll call me in for an interview and I can explain my REAL experience in detail with them. Sigh.

Well, the optimism was nice while it lasted.

I would have put the volunteer time down anyways. You got PAID via EXPERIENCE.
