I was offered a couple of sugar glider males for free by a breeder who goes to some of the same classes I do. If you do not know what these are...

SHAME ON YOU!

Just kidding!

Sugar gliders are palm-sized marsupial fuzzies native to Australia and New Guinea. They have the capability to "glide" through the air like flying squirrels and have large black eyes, a pointed head, and large, mouse-like ears. They have opposable thumbs and have chipmunk-like markings on their fur, which can either be gray, tan, white or albino. They have a musk like ferrets and are commonly associated with the possum family. They have long bushy tails that can get up to three inches long or more.

All in all, they are the cutest little things alive! Who else here has a suggie?

((Corrected. Thank you, Kip!))

Kip is the go to girl for gliders in this guild, she even has her own guild dedicated to them, she will for sure show up, I really wanted some, but they take a lot of care, and specific diet, and I like my pets to be just a little more...flexible, so if I do something a bit wrong it wont hurt them much sweatdrop

LOL Ah, but the upside is that they're cheap to take care of if you do it right! I'll have to join this sugar glider guild... O.o

well, I think it depends, you have to have a special diet, it's kind of like ferrets, a good diet helps prevent health issues later (bringing down vet bills) BUT cheap food (or not doing the right diets) makes it more spendy in the end, so yea it can go either way, but Kip says they need a lot of fresh fruits and a lot of protein (like fresh insects) which can cost....

My friend who breeds them says that feeding them bits of unseasoned cooked chicken and some of those Gerber baby supplements, as well as the glider kibble, should be enough to keep them healthy and balanced. She goes to a glider specialist with Texas A&M to care for her gliders. The bags of kibble are available at petco and petsmart and will last up to five months for one glider, and only cost about $15 - 17.

oh IDK I know I trust Kip cause she has done tons of research and she rescues (not all breeders know what they are talking about, I am not saying your friend doesn't but not all do) as far as I understand it though, they can be pretty complicated, but they are soooooo cute xD

They ARE cute! XD And I wasn't saying your friend was wrong, don't worry. I'm just giving you the absolute best lowest budget way to care for them if you get them as babies. If they've been rescued, of course they're going to need special love and care.

What I know about suggies is, they are small, and cute, and smart, and require a large special cage which most people, even good owners, often neglect. They are increasing in popularity around here but I haven't given too much thought to getting one. I guess cause I first wanted to get rats since I wanted them for so long. But now that you mention it, I do want suggies lol. Kip will have to sell me on them some day. In the meantime though I'm at full capacity with the two rats, a dog, a cat and fish.

Sugar gliders are palm-sized marsupial lemurs native to Australia and New Guinea. They have the capability to "glide" through the air like flying squirrels and have large black eyes, a pointed head, and large, mouse-like ears. They have opposable thumbs and have chipmunk-like markings on their fur, which can either be gray, tan, white or albino. I have been owning and rescuing sugar gliders for about 10 years now. I currently own 2 (this summer I said goodbye to my 9+year old boy ********* when he died suddenly of a stomach tumor. Until then it was 3 of my own... plus others that were rescues that got rehomed.).

One correction, while they appear similar, suggies are not lemurs. Lemurs are primates, and while sugar gliders have similarities to primates (intelligence, finger dexterity, etc.) they are in a different order, besides being marsupials.

Unseasoned chicken is a good protein. I like that, as well as turkey, mealworms, roaches, etc. (I like a variety) Baby food makes up a big part of one of the best diets, called BML.(or the variation, Judie's BML) If that is the diet you choose, that is great, it is a good oner and we were very happy with for many years. Now HPW works better for us. Both are proven diets, neither needs any kibble, though some people DO suppliment with a dry food. HOWEVER, I would be wary of any glider food you could buy at a pet store. I am not sure what brand they carry, but if it has corn in it the phosphorous levels are WAY too high for gliders. If it is "Pretty Pets" that is just relabled bird food and it will give gliders diarrhea as well as being full of junk they do not need.

ANYWAY... off my soapbox... for now. ninja

Cage size is a BIG thing. 24x24x36 inches high as a minimum for 1-2 sugar gliders BUT I would always recommend bigger PLUS lots of out of cage play time! A tent, like a small pup tent, is a really helpful thing to own, especially during bonding. freedom to run around you, on you, away and to you but safe from household dangers like electrical sockets.

I am sure I will chime in more. Oh SOOOOO much more. But if you have any other questions (or if anyone else is just curious!) ask!!! 3nodding

Thanks, Kip! What you said was really helpful about the diets, and especially the links. I will make sure to keep those on my bookmarks for future reference. I will soon be getting my gliders a cage, and the measurements you provided will be a helpful guideline.

I don't think I could ever stop myself from taking them out of the cage to play with them... xd Suggie pillow fort!

I hear they have a tendency to be really noisy at night, so you might want to have them in a separate room if you can, but I am not speaking from experience of course lol

LOL I know, they bark and crab and stuff xd But I like in a one-room apartment, so I don't really have a choice... I'll just have to get used to it. No biggie. And all of my light plugs are on the ceiling (don't ask, it's just a really weird apartment set-up) so there's probably not much danger of them zapping themselves.
