Taeryyn sans-coeur13 Taeryyn If people don't want to attend, it could be because the meetings aren't interesting and they're bored. well, the thing is we have two meetings a week, and people show up for one only. since we have two club advisers, i also feel that it shows disrespect when they only show up for one. we can't really schedule much events because of the tight leash the school has and the fact that it is impractical to schedule anything because of a lack of things What exactly do you do at your meetings? Have you considered cutting back to just one, since evidently there isn't enough interest to justify two per week?
at the meetings, we are mostly limited to free-forum discussions and in-class activities because of restrictions. i've tried to do more, but have had to jump through hoops and exploit every loophole possible. i've actually considered that, but club is held in two different rooms, the respective rooms of the advisers, and both advisers have contributed greatly to the club, but the most important day is the second day, where it is actually a full day. one of the advisers is unavailable any other day but the short day, which i've thought about getting rid of, but to do that means to get rid of the adviser who is the only person standing in the way of this club getting disbanded

There's obviously only so much you can do when you're so limited by what the school will let you do, and since you have to work your schedule around these advisors. I'm not sure what you mean by "full" day and "short" day. Are the meetings different lengths, or are the school hours different, depending on the day?

different school days, first day is on a monday, which is a late start day, shorter periods and lunch time given that school starts an hour and fifteen minutes later. the second is the day after, on a more regular schedule

It's been some time since I was in school, and these sort of things vary from school to school, anyway. 3nodding My old high-school now has a GSA, which I find surprising, considering it's such a small school. There were about 40 people in my grad class, for example, and about 240 students total, from grades 7 to 12. From what I've heard, they only meet about once every two weeks, and it's sort of a mish-mash of various clubs. They're putting on a play, they have a book-club, they get together for sport events (pick-up games of soccer or softball, that sort of thing), and they're doing a second-hand clothing fashion show.

interesting, and from what you've heard, is it thriving? it sure sounds like it is, and i'm surprised that they have a lot they are able and allowed to do given that it is such a small school.

I'm not sure, but they seem to have at least one activity a month, and the school has had quite a few out kids over the past few years. I graduated in 2005, so I don't really know the kids who are in school now; I'm just going by what I've heard from friends who have siblings still in school. (And my friend who is now a teacher there...God, I'm old. xD) I know things are slightly more strict now than they were when I was in school, but there wasn't really much hassle involved in starting any sort of school club. So long as you weren't doing anything potentially dangerous or illegal, the administration didn't much care. The main issues were finding enough people who were interested, and conflicting schedules. Where it is a small community, I suspect the members probably hang out outside of school, as well.

slightly doesn't exactly describe it. nowadays, with schools being dramatically downsized, schools fear lawsuits more than anything, and it's always the parents offended that are the biggest lawsuits, rather than those on the grounds of denial based on "miscellaneous" reasons. it's that fear that often prevents many clubs from doing a lot of things, most especially the GSA at my school.

Esiris What are your Club Officers contributing?
so far, they have been contributing a wide variety of discussion questions and topics, given that we've been limited to discussions. very often, they are the ones leading discussion, sharing the responsibility of both keeping order and keeping the discussion going. i've been trying to work on expanding the club as much as i can: in members, activities, and connections. so far, i've connected my club to PFLAG and a GSA in another school, and am preparing to work with another high school that has been denied formation of a GSA on campus. however, i don't make the decisions, i just propose them and they get either agreed or disagreed upon on by other members. the officers, along with other members, are the ones that "run" the activities of the club, i usually just try to set things up and improve the quality of their club experience. they also work to provide ideas on things that can be worked on, such as advertisements and new activities that we could propose for consideration by the school. so far, we're trying (although not making any progress) on trying to get videos and on-campus activities (ones that aren't just limited to the classroom) approved as well as some advertisement suggestions like posters and videos for announcements. i know they do a lot more work than i give them credit for

You can have your club spearhead a training for the staff and teachers!!!

I'd go to your local college and see if they have the training and would be schedule with your High School's HR to do the training.

i hope that can be arranged, considering that the nearest college is around ten to fifteen miles away D: haha, but i'm making excuses. it is definitely something to look into. i should make the inquiry before the end of the school year, either for this year or next year
