Malodore was ready. That was an understatement, actually. Malodore was thrilled and also just faintly nervous. It's first proper certification in first aid outside of the Casa! Naturally, the trust Nurse Cricket had already placed in its abilities was worth more than any bureaucratic declaration, but the demons of paperwork had to be satisfied.

And having that proof would be handy, anyway.

The watching gnome had set up a series of dummies, all set to mimic various afflictions. Hopefully interesting afflictions. Malodore bowed to the gnome (out of sheer politeness rather than any genuine respect) and turned to survey the room. Supplies there, yes, zealously guarded by the gnome lest anyone try to take too much. Tools there, excellent. The sight of the prone dummies laid out by the shining trays of scalpels would have made it salivate, had it been inclined to do so.

"I shall begin, then." The plague doctor walked over to the first dummy and prepared to assess its condition...

((3: Broken Bone))

Malodore gingerly ran its fingers over the dummy's false flesh. There were no visible lacerations, but one of the arms was at an odd angle. A moment's touch confirmed it: a broken ulna, though the radius seemed unscathed. A splint, then...

((9: Average; no direct repeats))

Malodore began to splint the arm, using care to re-set the bone and immobilize it. It then carefully wound gauze to hold the splint in place, next building up a proper cast around it using plaster. Finally, it prepared a sling.

... Not bad, though the plaster was kind of... lumpy. The plague doctor frowned. Not its best work. It would try again until it was satisfied.

((Try 2: Broken Bone))

The plague doctor dismantled the cast, careful not to damage the dummy any further in doing so. It threw away the used supplies and took a deep breath, trying to calm itself and improve its concentration.

((12; average - 1/3 requirements for ability completed!))

Malodore rebuilt the cast with care, first splinting, then applying gauze and rebinding before painting on the plaster. This time it used a steadier hand, more aware of how the plaster might slop or clump. Something even and balanced, that was the ticket...

When it was done, it had a much more passable cast. Satisfied, it patted the dummy on the head and moved on to the next challenge.

((Try 3: Bones still broken~ ))

The next dummy had its head at a really, really worrying angle. Oh dear. Malodore certainly hoped the dummy was representing an undead or something that wouldn't be unduly concerned by having its neck broken. Otherwise, well... it would be a job for Cricket.

So. Assume it's a zombie. Va bene. Continue...

((15; excellent work - 2/3 for ability completed! - repeating 4s, waaaaaaasteful, bad Malodore.))

Right. First, stabilize. Malodore retrieved a neck immobilizer from the supplies at the side of the room. It was a bit easier when one assumed the subject to be undead. Far less surgery required, for one thing; if this had been a demon or reaper, it might seriously consider a merciful dissipation. Better that than a long, hideous recovery with bolts drilled into one's scalp.

The plague doctor gingerly reset the vertebrae, moving with utmost care so as not to damage the spinal cord within. It then tightly wrapped the neck in gauze and splinted it - a procedure it would never use on a breather - before putting on the neck-

... damn. As it fastened the buckles, one claw slipped, tearing a gash in the fabric. The immobilizer sagged open. Okay, get another one, and... get glared at by the supply gnome, fantastico...

But at least it was done. And it didn't tear the second one. Bowing apologetically, Malodore moved on to the next dummy.

((Try 4: WRY SO MUCH BROKEN BONES, DICE ))

The next dummy's leg was folded under it, but the bend wasn't at the knee. Malodore gave the observing gnome the proverbial side-eye. Really, now? Had they never heard of variety? There were so many interesting ways to damage people and they had to go for broken bones every time?

Sigh.

((12: excellent work; 3/3 ability requirements completed! repeating 3s = wasteful again tsk.))

Malodore gingerly unfolded the leg and reset the bone, then pulled out gauze to hold the splint against the tibia. As if in slow motion, the gauze bounced free, unrolling gloriously in the air before hitting the floor and spooling away.

Again, the glare from the gnome.

Malodore rolled its eyes and retrieved another, sterile length of gauze. At least its extra practice earlier had really helped it as far as cast-making went; this time the work both went faster and was more satisfactory in the end. Soon, a smooth, well-balanced cast encased the broken leg.

Not bad. Not bad at all. Pleased, Malodore tidied up, careful not to waste any more material. "I believe that should be satisfactory. More than satisfactory," it added, pointedly, giving the gnome a firm look. "If I might have my useless piece of paper, per favore?" The gnome glared back, but handed over the coveted document.

"Grazie, you horrible little thing," Malodore replied, bowing and tucking the paper away in its sleeve. Another milestone passed. It would be a proper, accredited doctor in no time!
