cєℓєsтιαℓ ғιʀєғℓιєs:

Last summer we were living with my boyfriend's family (I'm going to refer to them as the inlaws to make things easier) because of a bad chain of events. My boyfriend's sister "found" a kitten and was going to "foster" it until she was older. Except by "found" I'm pretty sure she meant "got from a friend". It was a short-hair calico that went by Maggie or Squiddles.

Well, apparently it's getting sick now. GMIL took the cat to the vet a couple of weeks ago on the condition that MIL would make payments for it. She agreed. And then the cat actually saw the vet. MIL thinks the cat is "being poisoned". The vet disagreed, based on the symptoms, and says the cat likely has asthma.

Nope. It HAS to be "poison"!! MIL is a fifty-something pothead who still flaunts her high school diploma like it's a master's degree in whatever topic is at hand, and it CANNOT be asthma, it HAS to be poisoned. And she also refuses to pay the vet bill now because "I'm not going to pay for SOME CAT that's poisoned and the vet's gonna try and tell me it's asthma."

Here's the thing: she turns her house into a friggin' marijuana hotbox. Does it matter that she has an underage teenage daughter and a cat with asthma living with her? Nope. Not a single care in the world, she blazes up inside the house and fills the place with smoke and stench. She also smokes cigarettes inside the house, and so does her (again, underage) daughter. They do it together. But could that possibly have anything to do with a cat's asthma?? Nope, not one bit!

So now GMIL is talking about maybe having to put this (still under a year old) cat down, because it keeps getting really sick and she can't afford to pay for someone else's cat and it's just suffering in the meanwhile. And that is so sad. It's still a kitten.

I'm giving them the number to the rescue that works with our store first chance I get. And hopefully they'll choose to let Maggie go to a nice home where she can breathe clean air and her owners aren't some crazy potheads who believe someone is coming in and poisoning their indoor-only cat, as opposed to their second-hand smoke having an affect on this kitty. I would take the cat myself if I was able to, so would GMIL but she was adopted by that stray this past winter and it's more than enough for her.

I dunno. I was just thinking about it tonight and thought I'd vent and update about the kitten that was "found" last summer.

Call the cops on them. Or Child Services. ....Or both.

So, she's going to pay for her pot habit, but not to care for a cat that she let into the house? *raises eyebrow*

cєℓєsтιαℓ ғιʀєғℓιєs:

She's had the cops called on them several times. Once it was us. Sometimes it's her because she's having a petty problem she thinks is an emergency. They don't do anything about it because she has a medical marijuana card and both of them deny that the daughter does it too.

Yeah, that's how she's been her entire life, especially choosing pot over her kids. It's disgusting. She's meeting the basic needs (clean litterbox, food, etc.) but if she's not willing to pay the vet bills... I'm just gonna hope they accept giving the cat up.

Thats messed up! >=( You'd think there'd be some strict regulations on that kind of thing. Who else knows of this situation? If you can get enough people to ban together and start working on something to get the cops more involved....

Have *you* tried taking the cat in? Even if its not long term, and just until you can find her a new home?

cєℓєsтιαℓ ғιʀєғℓιєs:

My boyfriend's whole family knows-- they've been fighting against her since he was born. My boyfriend's the oldest with a different father, he actually won custody when my boyfriend was younger. For the other two, I guess because she wasn't explicitly abusing them the state said there was nothing they could do. Very sad, but at least my boyfriend and his brother have escaped it and are making names for themselves.

We've entertained the idea of taking the cat in. I actually just talked to GMIL again and we seem to be on the same page. She's trying to do what she can to help the cat, she just adores cats. I don't think she wants it put down, she just mentioned it in the case that there's something wrong with kitty that can't be fixed and she would be suffering her whole life. But she isn't opposed at all to helping them find a new home for it.

We'll see what happens when the cat goes to the vet today.

I'd say both she and the vet are right. If the cat has asthma then she is poisoning it with the smoke, and that is why the cat has the asthma in the first place.

I'd definitely try to get the cat out away from her.

Have you tried explaining to her whats happening to her kids and pets in the house, and the health issues *she* alone is causing them? You know the situation better than any one, but sometimes, guilt trips are the way to go.

Hopefully, whatever happens, the cat gets out of there in one piece...
