The War of Spirits - 1148

5/27/12 - 5/28/12

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Current Score
CRAB - 89 gold, 13.5 glory.
MANTIS - 46 gold, 7.5 glory.
PHOENIX - 41 gold, 5.0 glory.
LION - 35 gold, 6.5 glory.
DRAGON - 35 gold, 5.0 glory.

--------------------

The Mantis had been annoying insects, but the Lion roared defiantly at the Crab - and the Crab could not turn down that challenge. The Lion forces had holed up in Otosan Uchi, and the Crab now came for them, eager to finish what the Right Hand had started.

The demands were simple: Face the Crab in honorable combat, or they would go through the Imperial City to get to them. Not willing to put those people in danger, the Lion would march out to meet their rivals in a glorious last stand.

It was an interesting battle, to be sure. Crab siege weapons would launch boulders at the Lion; the Kitsu would use their magic to launch the boulders BACK at the Crab. It was a spectacle to be sure, almost ironic that both military clans were willing to bring such forces to bear on one another when they had a greater foe to fight.

Still, for every counterpunch the Lion threw, they had to take a punch first. Since they were so weakened already, a blow-for-blow ordeal was not in their best interest. Many did not wish to surrender and fought on after the battle had already been decided; but Ikoma Shiratoshi had to call for a surrender to preserve what was left of the Lion's military so that they might rebuild one day.

Proving themselves the more apt defenders of the Imperial City, the Crab would set up camp outside to defend it until this war was over.

--------------------

The Dragon had heard about the complete defeat of the Lion armies, by the hands of the Spirits and then the Crab. It was extremely unfortunate, for they were honorable warriors. If they were to rebuild, they would need their lands ridden of this foe. The Unicorn had been aided some, but for now, the Lion needed their help more.

The art of magic had been a glorious part of the Dragon's arsenal, wielded by the family of the Agasha. However, the Phoenix had been crippled by the Spirit Armies, and the Agasha's own daimyo had sided with Hantei XVI. Many were disgusted with the state of affairs of their clan and had abandoned it for the Phoenix.

Still, a few remained. A few very gifted priests who were still able to bring to the fore, the epitome of what the Shugenja of the Dragon can accomplish. The Spirit Armies were the spectators, as they suffered a barrage of fire and earth based attacks that completely devastated their ranks and sent them running for the hills.

Now, there was one less group of Spirits to handle, and the empire was a little closer to peace...

--------------------

The Mantis had suffered a bad blow by the Crab, and now several of the brutes occupied their islands! That wasn't cool at all. With their fleet quickly repaired, they sent for reinforcements from the mainland in the form of the Tsuruchi. The Crab were horrendously powerful close combat fighters, but the Tsuruchi had the advantage of range.

Oh, and Armor-piercing arrows.

One disadvantage of camping on an island base of your enemy is that there is no where to retreat to when your men start getting picked off from the jungle one by one and you have no enemy to fight. They struggled against an unseen foe, but armored with their heavy weapons, they had no one to use them against. All they could do was take cover as best they could, which proved to be an effort in futility.

The squad of Crab stationed on the Islands of Spice and Silk were quickly eliminated, and the islands belonged to their rightful owners once again.

D3 attacking Crab in I2
+1 for attacking from Dragon lands

Roll :: 3k1 w/ 1 for explosions

Total: 18

With the change in tide of the battle, and most of Rokugan free from the Spirit Armies control, another problem faced the Great Clans. The Crab had managed to take hold of a large proportion of the lands, and were in control of two of the Imperial Provinces. This posed a threat to the future control of the land, and swift action was needed to reclaim the provinces. For now the capital was the Dragons main concern.

Plays #21 :: The Enterprising Fleet of the Yoritomo
{{ +1k0 this battle for Mantis }}
{{ Double dice rolled this battle }}

M3 attacking S4 {{ +1 from Mantis lands }}

Between helping the Crane or the Scorpions, neither was appealing. The only thing that made them attack the Scorpion lands was that it was closer to the main force. It was time to ready the Storms.

While not fully equipped, the ships were fast. Hopefully, the Mantis prayed, it would be enough for a victory.

OOC :: If I did that right, it should be a 6k1 +1 for my roll, right?

The War of Spirits - 1149

5/28/12 - 5/29/12

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Current Score
CRAB - 102 gold, 14.5 glory.
MANTIS - 51 gold, 8.5 glory.
PHOENIX - 47 gold, 5.0 glory.
DRAGON - 43 gold, 6.0 glory.
LION - 35 gold, 6.5 glory.

--------------------

The Dragon had heard of the Crabs' conquest from the Lions they had rescued, and apparently the Crab were making a bid for a position within the capital city. The Crab had long since uninvolved themselves with the greater political machine of Rokugan, so their sudden interest was likely not one of peacekeeping.

The Crab were unprepared with the Dragon, of all clans, came marching from Lion Lands and demanding that they leave the territory. The Crab had pushed back Lion, Mantis, Spirits, all with ease. What trouble could the "mysterious" Dragon Clan pose them?

Of course, the Dragon's style was both offensive and defensive, and as their troops met the Crab in battle, they easily turned away their powerful strikes then struck them down themselves. The Crab fell rather quickly to the first wave of Dragon bushi, to the point where the losses they were suffering were not outweighing the gains - even despite the protective magics that the Crab were adept at employing.

The Crab had other presence in this region, and this rather small detachment was suffering unacceptable casualties. The general order was given for the Crab to pull back once more, and if the Dragon pushed matters further, they would see what it was like to face the full wrath of the Crab Clan.

--------------------

This was not the only location the Crab suffered losses this year. Previously, they had encountered several Mantis ships and the Crab Fleet managed to keep them at bay.

But the Crab had never seen a full-fledged Mantis Fleet in action before; or rather, they thought they HAD.

There were so many ships that sailed into Earthquake Fish Bay, the Crab ships were easily overwhelmed and outmanned. Torching them as they killed every samurai upon them, the Mantis then sailed to shore, deploying what must have seemed like their entire army on land. Then, in an unexpected turn of events, the Mantis moved towards Scorpion lands, not the provinces of the Crab!

The Crab held less of a defensive force here, but they were bolstered by Scorpion volunteers. The Mantis had arrived, and many of the Scorpion conscripts had defected in an effort to free their land from the Crab - an offer the Mantis would not turn down.

Mid-battle, those same Scorpions turned on the Mantis, eliminating a few key military figures, though those higher up the chain of command were too heavily guarded and the Bayushi who betrayed them were slain. The Crab would see that this plan the Scorpion had concocted had failed, and instead pulled back to their borders, in case the Mantis turned their hungry gaze southward.

FINAL SCORES
Crab = 116.5
Mantis = 59.5
Phoenix = 52
Dragon = 49
Lion = 41.5

Congratulations on the Crab for winning the first Minigame event!

Kaiu Kagae will find a nemurani awaiting him in Act 3!

In addition...

Kaiu Kagae, Kitsuki Masuyo, Bayushi Kojiro, Yoritomo Yukimitsu, and Mirumoto Nahomi have freed 13 provinces from the Spirit Armies' control. In addition, Imperial, Phoenix, Scorpion, and Crab lands remain free from the Steel Chrysanthemum's control! 13 + 4 = 17 points, split between 5 players, means everyone gains 3 experience points!
