While Shik had emerged relatively unharmed from the previous battles and had been in better spirits upon reuniting with the two women, the longer they went at the pace they were going, the less cheery he became. He cursed the cold not for the first time that day, though in this case it was worse than before. While the first time it had given him a sharper clarity in battle, this time it was just miserably chilly, wet and cold and seeping into his bare limbs without mercy; he even felt like he was moving slower.
Everything just wanted to get in his way, didn't they.
And the worst of them all, he was starting to realize, were his companions. If he didn't have to babysit them, he could have probably found Home already. So there was an edge to the horseman's voice as he asked them, "Do you need a helping hand, or are you both limping behind just to irritate me?"

Shaheen had followed, keeping a wary eye out for any trouble that might come their way. It was hard, however. The fog continued to shift and change, playing illusions with her eyes, making her see things that weren't actually there. And then there were the sounds, the whispers that for once were not in her head, but were just as aggravating, speaking of home. Of course, it was also cold, the chill seeping into her scantily clad body, a body that until The Fall was more accustomed to heat and humidity. It was exhausting, as though the chill were sapping the strength out of her completely. So yes, her movements were slower then they might usually be, but no more slow then Shik was moving, since he was only just a few paces ahead of her, taking the lead in this little party of three.
So when his voice cut through the eerie atmosphere of whispers and sounds just beyond sight, her dark brown gaze shot up towards him, one golden eyebrow arching. "We are only keeping pace with you at a distance to which we might be able to better defend ourselves from a surprise attack." She answered, her tone of voice cool. She did not want nor did she have the patience for one of Shik's little mood swings, regardless of how much she felt she might be indebted to him. Still, his timing seemed rather...off. Normally he would have behaved more sensibly in a situation such as this. A small feeling of concern was welling up inside of her, and she was about to ask him if was perhaps feeling unwell when something stopped her in her tracks.
A darkly tanned hand raised to her temple as her dark eyes closed, her forehead furrowed.
She had heard it. One of the voices again, she thought. But no, perhaps she was just being paranoid. Ever since Shik had said that he didn't know if what was in the vial had been a permanent cure there had been a small sense of worry gnawing away inside of her in the pit of her stomach.
And then she heard it again, more insistent this time, that all too familiar almost static background noise that she had been putting up with for the past several months. It was back. They were back, and she knew.
The vial had truly only been a temporary fix. Her insanity was returning.
