I can donate two thousand at the most because I finally got back up to 700k and I'm trying to get back in the millions again. I do suggest with your quest that you get up to a million gold and buy the highest things first. The market prices change like there is no tomorrow and keep an eye out for red signs when you go to the buy now screen because people like to buy low and sell high and now Gaia has signs on pages saying the item you are buying is either higher than the market and/or store price. Don't pay attention to the store price though because half the time the item isn't even sold in the damn stores so i don't know why they want to warn us of that.
I'm questing right now too. I'm gonna try to get to five million and buy everything on my wishlist, the highest thing so far I am questing for is the mint sundae. I don't normally put items that are a million gold on my wishlist but I so badly want that pixel!

Good luck on your quest! Like others, I'm questing myself and am therefor on a budget, so I can't really help out. 
I wish people would stop raising prices every time Gaia adds a new way to earn gold. I remember when the monthly letters were only 20k. D=
