Enough was enough. Even the strike from Wilson seemed to go relatively unnoticed as the baku's hands clenched into fists. There weren't any words to express her absolute frustration at this whole situation. She had come out all this way to get rid of this threat--to protect her friends and her people--and yet things were quickly progressing on a path that spelled danger for her side. The way her her fingers were twitching and her lungs were burning from inhaling too much poisonous gas, the fact that she couldn't see anything, couldn't even hit anything...

It was infuriating beyond all measures.

The burnished gem that was set in her necklace began to glow, faint but bright enough to see through the mist should someone be close enough. She greedily took in the additional surge of power that suddenly flowed though her, her tired expression switching to one of pure hunger and excitement as she felt herself become stronger.

But it wasn't enough. She wanted more. She encouraged the crown to make her as powerful as possible--powerful enough to crush those who were threatening her loved ones. As she stared into the cloud of gases that had formed around them, she thought that she could see something form. The wooden floor beneath her became a smooth stone bridge, and up ahead was a palace--her palace. That was right. She was a ruler, a King, and--

--And the threat was still here. The scene faded back to the Haunted House, and Xiu scanned her surroundings feverishly, her pink eyes glowing faintly. Where was he?! He had to be here somewhere. He was just hiding, the coward.

Desperate to seek the Hunter out, she lunged at the first shadow that came into view without even pausing to find out who it was, approaching them from behind. First came a sharp punch to the gut, which was followed shortly after a relentless series of kicks and strikes. Even when the figure fell, she did not stop, the light in her eyes gone as she allowed herself to be succumbed completely by the dark power of the Red Crown.

And slowly, very slowly, as the mist dispersed, she staggered back and collapsed on the ground as her gaze fell on Jake. For a second, her heart clenched at the sight--no no no she hadn't meant to hurt him!--but the guilt, concern, and fear were quickly washed away by a series of reassuring thoughts. She had just been trying to protect herself and Shun, she had thought it was the other hunter, it wasn't her fault.

Shun was still having a hard time breathing thanks to that rather direct attack he had taken. Doubling over for the moment to try and get some of his breath back, he saw Xiu lash out in a way he had seen only once before. It was like that time back in the big fray with all the horsemen too.

The crown's power. It was enough that it probably just completely destroyed that one hunter just now. Xiu might have felt frantic about it, but he personally didn't care.

The Reaper tried to use this time to focus his fear. If he could just concentrate enough, he would be able to try and pinpoint weakspots in all this miasma. But his issues with breathing kept him from doing just that. Grimacing, he straightened up, raising his daggers. They only had one left to deal with now. Even so, he couldn't let his guard down yet. This one had hit him much harder than the tonfa wielder anyway.

The bigger threat between the two.

Even a hit from behind was not enough to slow the student down. No, was it more accurate to say it marked only the beginning of her rage? He knew very well that he had the advantage between the two of them. Wilson knew how to hit harder when the time called for it, but even so there was still worry gnawing at his stomach. He suddenly felt queasy. Both hands over his stomach, the older hunter stepped away from the girl to dodge any surprise attacks from her. The room was drenched with comforting green, but it felt so weird. The cloud was the thickest it had ever been and his partner was cackling and shrieking. If Wilson was cautious and doubtful, then Gramps was absolutely paranoid and insane.

It was only one extra voice, but it was one more than he needed right now in his current state. Wilson clenched his teeth and tried to clutch his head, the gem on his weapon flashing just once. He stepped back again and again until he pressed himself against a wall. I’m going crazy. Fear seized his heart suddenly at the realization. I can’t go crazy, because then they’ll kill me again, and again, and again…! He hissed and banged his weapon against the wall, but instead the door flew open. With a way out at least, the mist began to filter out of the room and he could only watch on blankly.

As the gas thinned out at last, Wilson craned his neck toward the other occupants and shrieked. “WHAT DID YOU DO?!” He ran toward Jake and fell to his knees. Both canons clattered to the ground so he could rip off his mask. Wide, red eyes filled with panic stared down at the bloodied trainee. “Not again not again nono but it wasn’t my fault this time. It wasn’t my fault. It wasn’t me…” His gaze only contained child-like terror as he stared at the two students, cloaked in red for the briefest of moments before he looked back down and tried to sit Jake up. “Stopstoppleasejustopenyoureyespleasetellmeit’llbeokaypleasebeokay.” Wilson muttered to himself while he reached out for the gem on his weapon. Why hadn’t he noticed that before? No, he had, right…? And as the white gem glowed, he knew that things would be okay. He would patch Jake up just fine. They could leave and everything would be normal again.

But…normal? What was normal? All he knew now was fear and paranoia and greed.

Leaning against the wall, Jake took quick shallow breaths, doing his best not to breath in too much of the gas.
His FEAR shield was at its limit, and he couldn't afford to be caught off guard.

Just how... did all of this happen?
He had come here to find more students, hopefully getting more answers out of them, but instead, he had run into Wilson, along with that baku and her friend, and, well, it mainly turned into a showdown between the other two, something about protecting their people and what not. He had NO idea what was going on, and enough was enough. This was getting them nowhere.

A hand reached inside his coat.

He paused, frowning.
As much as he hated to admit it, Chester was right. The death hunter clearly wasn't in the right mindset at the moment, and leaving him here with that crazed ghoul and reaper probably wasn't such a good idea.

About to head back into the mist, he felt a punch aimed at his gut, knocking the wind out of him, and he doubled over, coughing.
The kick managed to shatter his remaining shield, leaving nothing to protect him from the relentless attacks.

Chester's voice was drowned out as Jake lay on the floor, gasping for breath, arms clutching his bloody torso.
The last he saw was Xiu's eyes, devoid of all emotion, looking down at him with contempt.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry...
Everything faded to black.

---------------------------

There was someone, calling him, far and distant.
Who...

Jake craned his neck to see, but there was nothing. The mist and fog was thick.
Who... who is calling me?

He ran after the voice, stumbling, but forced himself to push forward.
Exhaustion and fatigue wearing him down, he continued to stumble about aimlessly, the voice his only guide.

Please... don't leave me here... I don't want to be alone...
Tripping, he fell, crying out in pain.
He was lost, trapped, lonely...

Slowly closing his eyes, he let out a sigh.
So tired... maybe it would be better to give up. Maybe...

The sound of footsteps made his eyes fly open, and he strained to hear where they were coming from.
Were they... getting closer?

Are you going to give up so easily?
The voice was close. Soft, sounding amused.

Jake strained to look up, seeing a figure clad in white, smiling down at him.
Please, don't want to be alone...

A hand was stretched out towards him.
Then come. Follow me.

He closed his eyes.
I will follow you anywhere.

Everything faded to white.

------------------------------

"Stopstoppleasejustopenyoureyespleasetellmeit’llbeokaypleasebeokay"

Jake let out a groan, slowly opening his eyes.
His head pounded, he felt sore all over, he was...

fine?

The death trainee stared up at Wilson with a look of confusion.
Just what in the world happened?

The world fluxed, once, twice-

- The colour inverted-

- Everything stilled.

Jake was gone. Shun was gone. There was noone else but each other, two colossal forces burning a deep red and white. And then even the other blinked out of existence.

A figure standing in front of them. A deep smile. In their hands was a crown.

"You are ready now."

They couldn't help it. They heard the command from the blacked-out figure and their legs moved one step at a time. Their hearts betrayed them, calm and steady. They felt it, a hum, a thrill. They were ready. This was their time.

"We're waiting for you, all of us are."

Something whooshed, loudly, as the space behind the figure unfolded, revealing a large, wide frame. An empty, gaping hole. A deep sigh."

"At last."

At last they would be crowned what they truly deserved. The title as king. Both figures, the baku and the disillusioned Hunter, to the others, seemed as if they were fixated at a single point in front of them. Their eyes rolled up, their knees quivered, and without warning, both collapsed.

Silence. Stasis. Yelling, shaking, would yield no reaction. Their bodies were alive, but their minds entirely somewhere else, somewhere where they had been called to a higher calling.

If Shun approached Xiu, he would notice however, something off about her colour. It was a familiar sort of off, a sort of aura that radiated around her, similar to how the horsemen used their Fear. It smelled deep and archaic and unnatural: of distortion.

Wilson breathed a sigh of relief as Jake let out a groan and he looked up expectantly at the other hunter’s FEAR shield. Yes, it was completely repaired now. Just like the last time. He opened his mouth to say something, but the relief fled from his face as the entire room began to distort. The fluxes gave him a headache. The hunter wanted to grab his head just as light became dark and dark became light. He resembled a fish as his surroundings stilled and a weight disappeared from his lap. Jake? Wilson mouthed the trainee’s name, but his hands grasped only air. Where did he…? Actually, as he looked around the reaper boy had vanished as well. It was only him and her.

He tried to call out to her, but even she and her burning red blinked out of existence. Her body was replaced with a different person. Dark red eyes zeroed in on the dark crown in their hands. The white gem in the middle was similar to the one embedded on his weapon. Wilson warily eyed the figure before he tried to reach for the crown possessively. “Ready for what?” He rose from his position and walked toward the figure, step by step, slowly and carefully. Logically, he should’ve stayed away from strangers with strange crowns, but that crown was his. He knew it in his rapidly-beating heart. The time had come at last to at least claim what had always been his and to attain what he had been craving for all this time.

It was almost like seamless curtains opening with a flourish to reveal a large frame with a gaping hole. It was dark and empty. Maybe he was imagining it, but he could see it. His people, his city that had been waiting for him all this time. The room grew many times bigger as it dragged him into darkness before dim lights flickered to the life. The frame was not a frame at all, but a gigantic tunnel filled with people casually strolling to and fro. Up above his head he could see a few of them floating along with their boots or boards.

A few of the pedestrians respectfully nodded their heads to him as he passed and he smiled back. He melted into the crowd, laughing to himself all the while.

Perhaps Jake would catch the faintest of smiles just as Wilson’s eyes rolled up and he fell over to the side, sprawled over his weapon just before it reverted back to goggles.

Welcome back, Commander.

No no no, she had just acted out in self-defense--everything she had done right now was justified. If she hadn't attacked him, then maybe he would have harmed Shun. The baku was clearly unstable by this point, grabbing her head between her hands and squeezing her eyes shut as she switched between mumbling, "it was the right thing to do" and repeating "I'm sorry, it wasn't me" like a mantra.

Before she could even process what was happening, the area around her suddenly fell silent, both the Haunted House and the mist dispersing like an illusion as her surroundings warped and flashed. It wasn't until it stilled that she slowly lowered her hands, her nervous glance flickering back and forth as she pushed herself back up onto her feet. Somehow, the feelings of remorse and panic immediately disappeared as she settled in this new space, turning to eye the white figure in the distance. Was that...?

She didn't have a chance to do or say anything before he suddenly disappeared, another figure replacing them. Although her usual reaction would have been to tense up and and regard them warily, she felt...calm beside this individual. Her expression was questioning at first, and then a flash of desire and recognition passed through her eyes as her attention fell on the crown in their hands.

Ready, he said...ready for what? And who was waiting for her? Wordlessly, she began to lift her gaze away from the crown, only to find her eyes being drawn to the space that bloomed behind him. There was a moment of confusion, and then the baku's eyes widened as a number of voices reached her ears. They were calling her name, calling out to her, calling her their king.

And slowly, Xiu stepped forward, a soft smile on her face as she let herself be embraced in the light and life that was her kingdom.

Shun was just about to move in for the attack while the hunter was panicking over his fallen comrade. However, he came to a complete halt as he somehow managed to completely revive the blue haired one.

"What the hell..?" he remarked as he watched this all happen. Hunters weren't supposed to be able to do this. Is this some sort of new tech of theirs? Either that or that one had just managed to acquire some strange power. s**t. This was really bad news. And things were about to get even worse really soon.

Something was going on between Xiu and the masked hunter. He couldn't tell what but it looked like they were fixated on something. Warily, he looked between the two before they both ended up collapsing.

"Kusoo.." he hissed as he rushed over towards the Baku's side, nudging her lightly to try and see if she was alright. The first thing he noticed was a strange sort of aura around her. It reminded him of the horsemen in a way. And it also reminded him of that time while they were all minipets. The fragments. Distortion.

The other thing was that there was no reaction to him nudging her. But she was clearly alive. Else she would have dissipated. Plus it was apparent that she was still breathing and such.

Angrily, he shot a glare towards the two hunters. It was tempting to blame this on them, but it wasn't too probable. One of the hunters had been incapacitated as well. The one that Xiu had been fixated on for most of this battle. Something strange was going on over all. It was also incredibly tempting to shadowstep over towards the fallen one and plunge his daggers straight into his heart to try and finish him off while he was out, but it would leave Xiu vulnerable. He wasn't sure what sort of condition she was in, but it was probably best that she didn't end up dissipating while she was like this.

It was probably better that he got her out of the haunted house first and foremost.

Picking her up carefully, he kept his good eye on the two hunters, just in case the conscious one tried to pull something. He wasn't letting his guard down now. Nor was he going to turn his back to them. Once he had Xiu, he began to back off, making his way towards the exit.

Jake was about to open his mouth, asking the older hunter what the hell just happened, when he saw Wilson's expression change, looking pained.
Getting up, he knelt beside Wilson, wondering if it was even safe to touch him. Hearing the hunter say his name made him flinch, and he stared intently at Wilson.

"Hey, what's wrong? HEY."
Grabbing his shoulder, he gave the death hunter a firm shake.
"Snap OUT of it dammit. Did you breathe in the gas?"

He continued shaking the hunter when Wilson finally turned his gaze back on him, a faint smile on his lips.
Thinking the hunter was fine, Jake let go. He never should have let go.

Jake only stared in silence as the death hunter's eyes rolled up, falling over, his arms cannon transforming into a pair of goggles.
If his weapon reverted to its totem form without him commanding it to do so...

Grabbing Wilson's shoulders, he pulled the death hunter up so that he was leaning back against the wall, and gave him several more firm shakes.
"Hey, WAKE UP, what the hell is wrong with you?"
He contemplated slapping the hunter, but Chester made a displeasant sound in his head.

What, you want me to HAUL him back?!

Turning around, Jake noticed a familiar pink-haired ghoul slumped over.
Just... what the hell was going on?

Grunting, Jake hauled the death hunter up, putting one his arms around the back of his neck.
Geez, the guy was huge... and heavy.

Huffing, he cast a glance towards the reaper, who had already retrieved Xiu and was currently backing away.
This was not the time nor place. Neither of them could really fight given the current circumstances.
"Looks like we're going to have to settle this another time." he muttered.

He pulled out the pendant, whispered a few words, and portaled out.
