I need to hear your opinions on this.

At first, I felt that I am greedy on birthday presents. So, I never wanted to talk about this issue to someone else. However, I want to talk about this to you. I don't mind if you criticize me because if I have any flaws, I like that people tell me so I can change.

I'm 22, jobless. I stopped celebrating my birthday after 17. When I was a kid I never celebrated b-day with friends it was only family. I didn't really know how to organize a b-day party. So, I often imitate what my friends do.
Around 17, many of my friends would like to celebrate their b-day in restaurants. So, we pay for our meal and we would bring gift. Some people don't bring gift.

I often bring gifts because I felt somehow bad that everyone brings a gift, while I don't. Sometimes, friends would buy a collective gift.

However, one time I didn't know how much my friends would spend on a gift so I had to pay once 40$ and the other time 50$ because I said I would participate in the collective gift. I find 40$ and 50$ very expensive ...

My birthday is very different. They send me Happy Birthday in a text message and that's all.

One of my friend once ask me why I don't celebrate my b-day.
I said everytime my b-day arrives, I hear everyone complaining that they are broke. I can't ask you guys to go eat at the restaurant....

Here are my full reasons.
1- I hear everyone complaining that they are broke. I can't ask you guys to go eat at the restaurant....

2- My b-day is in the summer, my appartement doesn't have air conditioner, it would be very hot and uncomfortable for my guests and myself.

3- In the past, I tried to celebrate my birthday the most cheapest way.
So I picked a time that ''would be'' after the supper and that we go out (it was the summer sale in the stores so we went there). However, nobody ate, so they were hungry and after passing by all the shops (the shops were not interesting). They decided to leave and went back home.
I was deceived.

4- After someone b-day, I can hear them complaining how the b-day was boring because of XYZ reasons... So, I wanted to not celebrate the same way as they did because I fear that '' it is boring''. However, mine turned out to be boring too.

sounds like they're not really friends, if they're all like that. stop going to their parties, and if they complain, tell them their loss.
sounds to me that they're just using you to get free stuff. find new friends, who aren't like that.

Well you're jobless, wouldn't you complain about being broke if a friend's birthday came around? Anyways as far as your reasons go i have my two cents about those

1. Then stay home and a have a friendly get together with chips and such and laugh and watch movies. Birthdays doesn't always mean restaurants.

2. Then get a fan! I mean how are you paying for an apartment if you're broke?

3. Basically you just store browse? Of course they are going to go home! Refer to number one for a cheap idea.

4. Well here is another idea. Get together with your friends one day before your b-day or someone else's b-day and come up with ideas.

Honestly though birthdays in my family are no big deal, we get someone a gift and sing happy birthday and go on with our lives.

Because I live with my mom, I am not the one who pays.

I am searching for a job. It's not like I do nothing everyday. I got interviews but they don't hire me.

If it's in summer could you have a picnic or something? Everyone brings a dish or bottle of wine? That way your together eating together, but not somewhere expensive or stuck in a hot apartment?
Or go to a restaurant but make it a quite event with only 2-3 people that your fairly sure will actually want/be able to go.

Basically it's your birthday so you should be able to do what you want, and if people are really your friends they'll be there 3nodding

I agree that you should either find something that isn't really expensive or just spend the day with family. Birthdays aren't really a big deal for me either so I have never had a birthday party, gone out with friends, etc.

Than find a job.

It is more difficult to get a job than to just 'find' one. Depending on your experience and the area that you live it can be almost impossible.

So did I? But whatever.. I don't care. I was just saying that it's really difficult in some places so it isn't that easy.

Since my birthday is coming up in five days time, I've been looking for inexpensive ways to spend it. According to my google research, there are many little ideas that may be helpful to you.
One of my favourites is to have a wine and cheese evening. Invite your friends over (or maybe out to a park?) and ask them to bring a bottle of wine each, whilst you can supply the cheese and fruit. Ask them to get dressed up for the occasion and just have a good time trying different combinations of cheese wine and fruit. If you're into that sort of thing.
But if not, have a look at this website and see if you can find anything to inspire you.
