Perhaps it was just revenge. He'd eaten so many of them, it was only right that he, in turn, be eaten by a giant one.

It was still disgusting as hell though.

When Gabby woke up, he was horrified to discover his new coloration. His beautiful whites we all gone, tainted by color at every turn. He mourned them quietly to himself, even as he filled an inkjar with the putrid colored slime. When he was done, he topped it closed, and turned to leave, heading straight to his room to try and wash the colors away. And probably cry in the shower a lot, too.
