Genaro Drago had felt his chest rise and fall heavily as he tried to catch his breath. In his last mission he’d managed to get hurt pretty badly, but he’d won that little spat. He knew his wounds weren’t severe and if treated no one would even know they were there. However, Genaro was having some difficulties healing them himself. Being a Unicorn had its perks if you were you healing someone else. In his case, however, he was useless. Not that Genaro was proficient in healing to begin with. He could heal minor scratches and take some of the bite out of minor wounds but even then it would take some serious concentration on his end. It was better just to find someone else who could take care of him. That’s what had led him to the small herd run by a mare named Victoria. She lived together with her children, both the adopted one and the biologically born one’s, as well as her granddaughter (by her adopted daughter). The herd was small and nice enough. They had been weary when he’d come to their doorstep injured like he was but they’d accepted him nonetheless. “Ouch.” Genaro said, his body flinching slightly as the young mare Helena Augusta tried healing him with her own horn. Her healing skills had proved to be better than his thankfully, though not by much. None of her family members were unicorns so the fact that she even knew how to heal someone in the first place was amazing to him.
”Wining is unbecoming of you.” Helena replied with a giggle. Genaro couldn’t help but let out a sigh. It was true, however, he wasn’t going to miss the chance of being able to treated by all these single lovely mares. Genaro Drago was many things, but a wayward stallion was not one of them. Admittedly though he did have his moments of flirtation or now, wanting to be taken care of by some lovely mares, but that’s as far as it went for him. Helena seemed to hold no interest in him either but she at least played along with the flirting at times. ”Well let’s see how you do with some wounds of your own. Tell me then whose wining is unbecoming.” He replied with a snort.
Since his arrival the young stallion had been holed up in a small canopy of flowers that had been made into a den for him while he stayed. A way of keeping him cool and allowing his wounds the chance to heal without issue, but also making sure that the natural landscape was not burdened by his arrival. He wasn’t sure if he was glad that they cared more about their home than they did him or not. It meant that he wasn’t a permanent fixture here. Genaro felt very conflicted about that. He was an assassin so sticking around in one place would be rather hard for him to do, but he couldn’t help but long for roots somewhere, anywhere. As if she’d sensed his little musings, Helena smiled warmly. ”It’s always peaceful here. Occasionally travelers like you will come here but most of the time we’re pretty secluded. It’s the perfect place to lie low if that’s what you were intending to do.” She said softly to him as she placed some petals onto his wounds with some sort of mixture from a plant that grew nearby. It felt cool against his hide. ”I’ll make sure to keep that in mind.” Genaro replied as he watched Helena leave his makeshift den. The thought of staying called to him but there wasn’t any reason to.
”Maybe one day I’ll call this place home. Not today.” He said before laying his head down and letting the fever take him into a deep slumber for a few hours.

Jacqueline paced about nearby where the stallion Helena Augusta was treating had been holed up for the last couple days. What had injured him? Were they going to come back looking for him? Oh, what if the walker who had harmed her daughter Claudine came back? What if--
"Mom, please calm down." Claudine pleaded, her voice harsher than intended. It had been many moons since she had gone down a. . . Well a path she no longer walked, but at times the mare she was and the mare she is got a bit confused in her brain. Thankfully, things had calmed for her in recent years. The wonderful stallion she met could be one major reason why. "What does Victoria always say? When your mind begins to wander and you're pacing like this it means you should think calming thoughts. Try to take deep breaths and calm your mind." Claudine coached, aiming for a softer tone than before.
"Calm? But he just--" Jacqueline began before her daughter interrupted her. "Yes, but if you let your thoughts spiral you won't be able to learn anything." Claudine added, Jacqueline sighing before following the advice.
Several minutes, deep breaths, and a near panic attack later; Jacqueline had quieted her mind enough that all the thoughts she had didn't overwhelm her. "Thank you." She said to her daughter before once more turning her attention to the opening of the den they'd constructed. color=#66CDAA]"Do you think he's awake?" She added, daring to take one step closer.
"Does it matter? We need answers and one of us has to go in there and get them from him." Claudine remarked. She knew why she was being left out of the questioning, and why her mother in particular had volunteered to question the male first. Admittedly, out of all the herd members it could have been, Jacqueline would be the kindest and any wrong moves on his part would surely lead to explosion from their lands. The small herd was protective of Victoria and her biological daughter Helena Augusta, for obvious reasons, but the devotion to keeping her mother Jacqueline safe was purely out of love. There wasn't a member amongst them who didn't feel protective of the mare.
When Claudine had been younger she hadn't understood her mother, why the herd cared so much about her and. . . everything at been her fault back then. Now? Now she had a new perspective on everything thanks to the walker who was rumored to still be nearby. Claudine couldn't stop the full body shudder that overtook her. And this was why she was the furthest away from being chosen to question the male. It was because of her and her thirst for darkness that had led the herd to be weary of walkers. She'd led one here.
Noticing that her daughter had quieted, Jacqueline gently nuzzled her before pushing her more firmly in the shoulder. "You should go seek out your. . . Christian." Jacqueline smiled. "Yes. I'll check on you later, okay?" Claudine added before turning back towards the main area of the herd.
It wouldn't be long until her daughter and Christian were mates, she could feel it. It brought her immense joy to know her daughter would be happy with someone who treated her like she was the center of his universe. While she had wished that Claudine hadn't lost her way and which led to their two paths crossing, she was happy that they had found each other despite it all.
But she couldn't focus on future happiness until they had an answer. Who injured this stallion and how did he find them? While they were never ones to turn away someone in need, they needed to be more careful. You never knew when--No. Stop. Don't spiral again. Jacqueline thought to herself. She needed to do this now before she couldn't. And. . . While the rest of the herd meant well, she knew that if certain members were forced to question him they'd be lot meaner about it. Which meant he'd be less likely to talk. Thus far Helena Augusta had reported that he liked to flirt, but it was clear there was no heart behind it. In fact, she said he seemed sad and lonely.
Jaqueline could certainly relate to that feeling. Since her past-mate had disappeared, Jacqueline had gone through every emotion possible before she'd finally had to admit he wasn't coming back. And Claudine had hated her for it. Now Claudine knew it wasn't her fault but. . . Some of the hurt was still there. And why it was harder for her to deal with Jacqueline's anxiety. Maybe this stallion had similar heartbreak? Though she wouldn't wish that on anyone.
Jacqueline shook herself both mentally and physically from her thoughts; her hooves moving forward with one last mental boost. Time to see what this stallion knew.
